Let's just say 'equality for all' and be done with it. But that means gays and lesbians can serve in the military, and that means if my church chooses to marry gay couples, the government has an obligation to recognize that union.

Because they still had slaves and only white men were equal, women weren't. They were trying though. It was a start. They meant well.
You are right that we Christians certainly set a poor example. If we truly lived up to the teachings of Jesus Christ with His Holy Spirit dwelling within us, people would be attracted to us and not repelled. However, Christians have a set of standards that they believe they have to live by and no one really respects that. People want to impose their beliefs or lifestyle or whatever on us without our having a choice. I am fighting for my rights as much as you are fighting for yours.
Just like there are militant Christians forcing their agendas so there are militant gays forcing theirs. As long as you have people groups trying to force everyone to not just accept them but to accommodate them in every way shape or form, regardless of their beliefs, you will have tension and prejudice.

Preparing for the draft?
Please look beyond the divisive culture war aspect of this to a more ominous possibility.
Clearly, there is no way a draft would work with the current policy. Anybody who did not want the opportunity to be a coffin stuffer for their country could simply be out, loud and proud the moment they got a draft notice.

During previous drafts, being gay was called a psychiatric disorder and gay sex was a crime in most states, not to mention the risk of bashing and social stigma. People were extremely well motivated to conceal their orientation.
