America faces dairy shortage!

0 votes

That is the scenario if cartels like Borden, Dean Foods, and the Dairy Farmers of America are able to squeeze out small independent farmers. America has slept while jobs and industries have gone overseas due to monopolization and stringent government regulation which strangle the free market. As you read this, a battle rages for one of the few remaining commodities produced in our country. When will America finally say ENOUGH!?

I'm not for the little guy

I'm not for the little guy being put out of business but in your scenario above just how would there be a shortage? (Not that it would matter if there was an actual shortage.)

Don't drink milk

I don't drink milk, but I still want a Jersey cow.
My husband has just gotten used to the 5 hens we have. Is he ready for a cow?
Adults do not need milk, butter from grass fed cows is another thing.

P.S. It just started raining. First rain of the season. (SO CAL)

we live on a farm

and haven't ate/drank cattle/dairy for over 5 yrs.
Goats milk is the way to go--no antibiotics-pesticides..nothing
also makes great soap and shampoo

Wonder why 10 yr old girls now a days look like their are 18?

Dairy and hormones

The son of a friend had to have breast reduction surgery at 15 yrs old, from drinking too much hormone laced milk.

Dairy Industry Rotting Out Due to USDA

The dairy "industry" is HEAVILY regulated by the USDA dating back to FDR. Farmers join marketing areas or "compacts" which are essentially territorial monopolies. They are paid a fixed price for their milk by the compact. On the demand side, the same gallon of milk can cost 3 different prices based upon what it is used for. Drinking milk is charged the most, butter second which subsidizes the producers of cheese who pay the least. The cheese makers are subsidized so when the USDA wants to drive the milk price up, they just buy cheese and store it in a cave in Missouri (since cheese lasts longer than milk or butter).

What's more is the drinking milk price is based upon how many miles the dairy was from Eu Claire Wisconsin! It is the stupidest, most Marxist example of bureaucratic, Byzantine nonsense ever contrived by our government.

I feel nothing for dairy farmers and cheese makers other than contempt fas they loot and rake in wild profits from this ridiculous system. Oh, and, in case you haven't noticed, most dairy farms now have over 3000 head and are often owned by big-agribusiness who wantonly suckles the teet of government largesse.

Another thing

We've got a lot of older family farms and what used to be dairys here in the NW area of Houston. Every time I turn around these are going on the market and are turned into subdivisions. This has to stop. We're going to need these farms for food guys, we need the dairies for milk....WE'RE IMPORTING ALMOST ALL OUR FOOD FROM OVERSEAS. Does anyone else see a problem with this. Dependency is not a good thing if that tap gets shut off.
people will start to get hungry. We did about 10 acres of produce this last spring/summer and we always sold out. People know the crap in the stores is garbage by and large. They want organic produce and raw milk..
WAKE UP !

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow

if only...

...you could whip up a good omelet with eggs and beer (instead of milk) or wet down your cereal with beer.

Darn, I guess you just have to drink the stuff by itself instead.

Got beer?

But seriously...I'm pissed that we allow corporations to damn-near monopolyze the dairy world. I'd support a law that put severe limitations on the size of any corporation, for any product. And that includes the Budweisers of the world. I just bought my locally brewed Fat Tire from New Belgium Brewery out of Fort Collins, Colorado. They are wind powered and employee owned, to quote the label. A brother of an old girlfriend is one of their microbiologists.

In a recent issue of Army times

I saw that some soldiers are getting into brewing their own beer. Possibly cheaper and healthier.

Goat's milk

is a great alternative, especially if you can get it raw and organic. Just check out the farm first.

goats and grass

Have you seen those people who truck around a herd of goats, surround them with a portable fence, and let them go after wild grassy areas that need to be mowed?

Man, that is smart.

yeah what a business!

I think I need to get a goat, i hope my landlord won't mind...

And the Commies in

And the Commies in Washington pass the Food Health and Safety Act of 2009 to make it even harder for the little guy (and home gardner) to survive. This was the Gubermints repsonse to the samenilla (sp) outbreak last year at the factory in Texas (I think it was lettuce or cabbage processing house) that was all over the news. Probably another conspiracy plot yet again!

The Amish way of life is looking better and better all the time. I used to wish when I was a boy that I could be Amish after visiting Kutztown in Pennsylvania.

Government is incompetence.

Letting politicians and bureaucrats manage the economy is like letting garbage collectors perform brain surgery. They are completely unqualified. This is why the free market is the only answer to prosperity.

Factory farms are killing America

Factory farming is putting the little guy out of business while poisoning people and the environment. This is one of the reasons I try to get people to eat less meat and dairy. Boycott the stuff. Eat locally grown or organic. Eat at Chipotle's. Boycott these losers that are destroying the food supply and the environment in the process of being totally inhumane to the animals.

America faces a shortage of

America faces a shortage of lots of things, but dairy is hardly one of them. A gallon of milk at Costco is currently under $2. Could certainly be even cheaper, absent productive people having to drag along an army of tax and regulation feeding riff raff, but still...

be careful...

the cheap stuff is laced with Monsanto Magic! read the article!

Might be a good

idea to buy powered or canned milk to have on hand also.
