I've been thinking about this often, and I would like to hear some of your thoughts.

However, I would probably agree with freeing non-violent criminals depending on the crime. Maybe for some non-violent criminals the penalty might switch from prison time to house arrest or something like that.

First They should forgive

They should forgive all probations and cut back on that budget. Then they should lower sentences for all non-violent crimes.
Then after that we will see.. but those steps should be taken immediately, especially in over-crowded prisons. Unless the governments wants to start a bunch of mini wars and riots at prisons.

Imagine an entire state as a prison... GEORGIA
In fact wasn't that the case for Georgia; and yet the second amendment even still applied to them too?
Isn't Georgia where the British sent their worst prisoners.
Its actually really simple and I agree with jruss133...
1) Give the people back their full gun rights and encourage all able bodied persons over 18 to carry a firearm safely on their person everyday.
2) Fire 100% of the police (sorry donut shop owners) and fire 60% of all sheriffs deputies (keeping just enough to support the critical court functions).
3) Let all the captives (prisoners) free regardless of crime.
4) Let the people with guns deal with them when they step out of line.
Since the police gangs would be fired and out of business regular people would no longer be afraid to actually use their guns on the criminal.
My 12 gauge certainly provides better service than calling 911; so what are you really worried about.
Just shoot instead of making a phone call.
And for those who are afraid of such a plan I ask you to remember how many really dangerous criminals are paroled every month. Because of the police gangs we have a more dangerous situation already because when we are attacked we are afraid to fight back for fear of being arrested ourselves.
FIRE THE POLICE, free the prisoners.
If we each carry there is nothing to worry about. Certainly it would be a better situation than what we live under today.

OK, let me try... How can those actively involved in fraud and violence incarcerate others for doing the same thing?
The natural argument against liberating the prisoners would be fear of violent individuals. Gandhi would tell us that this fear is wrong. We should have the courage to take a blow and not respond with violence. Jesus would tell us to turn the other cheek.
The best way to reduce violence in the world is to stop responding to violence with more violence.
I have more to say about this, but I'd much rather hear what you guys think.

I agree we must use compassion but we must also
consider the individual rights of others. If one individual is prone to violence, sometimes taking them out of the general population is the only way. Remember when an individual chooses to harm another he loses their rights if a group of peers sees fit.

How many times shall you forgive or help a person ? It had nothing to do with violence againt you...Protect your cheek against intrusive behavior.
This is a matter of personal decision as you are given the insite to handle the situation, with the object being that of personal witness in order to bring a person to the TRUTH. What will it take to reach this person ?
What is prudent, to accomplish God's objective.
And then you could get into perfect will & permisive will , ETC.

All non-violent crimes other than treason or spying should never
be put in the for profit prison industrial complex. That would be about 85% of the population too.
