LESSONS LEARNED Discussion Thread **UPDATED**
ALL OLD HEADS: Please weigh in with your views. This being lessons learned, it is logical that the longer you have been around the more experience you have gained and hard knocks you have suffered.
Newbies are of course welcome and encouraged to comment, particularly on what they believe was most critical to waking up and staying that way.
The primary purpose is to create a basic intro to Individual Freedom/Freedom Movement for Newbies. The secondary purpose is to help not so newbies stay grounded with basics, avoid repeating past mistakes and aid relating to those that did not directly experience what has happened to date. Further to "Read this First" for newbies; the current situation confronting anyone new to the DP is to face an overwhelming amount of brilliant Individual Liberty Pearls of Wisdom spread all over:-D and the extremely rare, ahem, less than Pearls of Wisdom sprinkled in. They face this, perhaps/assuming the LCD, without any core context.
Examples of items that could be included:
Who we are/most basic belief-
We are individuals that believe Individual Freedom is both ethically, naturally correct and leads to the greatest benefits for all.
What/Who we oppose, Who opposes us-Collectivism/Collectivists.
We oppose this because it is in direct opposition to Individual Freedom, is abusive of the individual, pits artificially created groups in artificially created conflict with each other, is a proven flawed concept, facilitates mass control of individuals to the detriment of individuals and mostly to the unearned benefit of the controllers.
Wisdom from the Founders-Important quotes, concepts.
Successes/Failures during the 2008 Campaign
Short List of Books/Videos
The above examples are in no way written in stone or required, again, only offered to initiate discussion. What does make the cut should be as concise and basic as we can achieve but still addressing all critical/core matters.
What is the Lessons Learned "DISCUSSION" Thread(this thread):
The discussion thread exists to propose and form consensus on items to add(or delete) from the Lessons Learned Thread.
What the Lessons Learned thread is NOT: The LL thread is not an attempt to force an "approved" orthodoxy upon all the wonderful, free thinking cats that populate the DP.
The cats are on of our strengths and are a concrete example that we live what we preach.
The LL will only make some of the most basic/critical/core pearls more easily accessible.
Final Note: If adopted the LL thread might be incorporated as a step in the DP registration process. Changing the title from "Lessons Learned" will not bother me the least and I am certain someone else can come up with a more appropriate title.
Thanks for reading. Comments/Bumps please.
****NEW*****
Based on the comments so far it may be of benefit to alter the concept by splitting it into two separate parts:
1. Newbie Basics/Read Me First- Short, concise list of the most critical, basic, core concepts, quotes, videos, books. Each could be linked to more in depth coverage if appropriate. The idea is "Introduction to Individual Freedom/Freedom Reclamation Movement or an orientation to same. Possibly including some general recommendations on how they can assist right away, invite friends to visit DP, Read TST, etc.
2. Permanent Record of ALL Lessons Learned to date and going forward-
This would be much longer, much more detailed and far less space and topic restricted.

Rate the Suggestions of others
An important aspect of this concept is not just offering your own suggestions but rating/commenting on the suggestions offered by your fellow DP'ers. This is intended to involve consensus building. Thanks.

From Experience...
This last election was the first time I became involved in politics, thanks to Dr. Paul and a very cool JBS member.
Primary Night: My wife and I were selected as delegates, to go to county. Republicans were outnumbered by Democrats 8 to 1 (at least).
Many decent old ladies supporting Huckster offered several resolutions for the party platform, to be submitted for approval at County.
Next: Received a phone call from the County Republican Chairman, who informed me that the 'message' came from 'above' to support McCain. He informed me that McCain was not his 1st, 2nd, nor 3rd choice... I argued with him for 10 minutes, as he ended with the comment that it was 'out of his hands'... He resigned after the election...
County: Met with the different County Republican Committees, we were selected to go to State, as alternate delegates. Voted on resolutions to be taken to state.
State Convention: Dr. Paul bows out...
Later: Finally met Dr. Paul, spent 20 minutes with him. I asked why the people spend time writing up resolutions, voting on them from local to county, to state, to national, only to have the party throw out all resolutions, and write their own party platform.
Dr. Paul asked me if I thought that the President of the United States would actually follow the party platform, let alone the Constitution... The resolutions are a lesson in futility... Care to comment Dr. Steve?
Waiting for 2012...

Regarding Palin: I believe we are watching in real time the rise of the third party, which will be controlled by the powers that be from its' inception.

•Delegates! important.
•Parse out and Tivo all Media Channels on Obama and Republican puppets for what they said/lied/miss led/ignored/false statements/unread bills/Votes...everything and anything.
•Start putting up these videos together so we will have a pool of material to build on for advertisements on TV and otherwise.
•Brainstorm ....where the country will be at in 2012 Economy/War/Finance/Unemployment....Recession/Inflation/Money+Gold standard> all the things Ron Paul was right about and known for. Again.....Video,Video,Video
•Video Testimonials of Democrates that have seen Obama for what he is, the unkept list of promises "fool me once" and have hence become Ron Paul supporters
•Music brings people Together...if you see a band or singer somewhere(even a subway, street, or coffee house) that you think have orginality, have really good vocals & music ....ask them if they would do a song for RP and patriots, tell them there is a great vaccum waiting to be filled ...they will be heard all over....we make Music Videos and push it out all over....
•Video cameras and vigilance of highstake Primary States on voting day/night.
•Even recommend people moving/relocating their residence to these states ASAP if you are in the neighbouring states.

Don't we already have this?
"Essential Videos", and "resources", on the right...and down a bit?
Though I think a Quote Compendium, where we record the best one-line conceptual explanations/refutations would be a useful addition...

Great Question
I was going to specifically comment on what you have raised in the general outline of the concept above.
I see this as different from essential videos, resources in many respects.
The Brief (critical/core/basic) Intro for Newbies is just that and intended to be the first thing they see here at the DP. A little background basics that get them started in the right direction and whets their appetite to self explore, "essential videos" and "resources" without coming to that area totally cold.
Ideally, as mentioned above, the BRIEF Newbie Intro would/will be incorporated as a step in the DP registration process. Then they are off to random meanderings w/ all the rest of us unherdable cats. The basic thinking here is new folks come in with a range of backgrounds, some may have almost no experience/knowledge what we or this freedom thing is about and worse, many have been given very false and misleading info about Us/Dr Paul. I think this is especially important now that many are getting their curiosity peaked by recent MSM RP appearances/Fed Mentions/Tea Parties/etc. If their self directed exploration by chance hits a raw nerve initially they can have a false but lasting impression to carry to others. We have no way of knowing, TMK, how many may blow through here, get a false and negative impression never to return but thinking they know what we are about. This is a means to quickly and accurately put our welcome mat, best foot forward. Like "NEW HERE? WELCOME, THANKS FOR STOPPING BY, STAY AS LONG AS YOU LIKE, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST".
The Second, separate LESSONS LEARNED is a running repository JUST for Lessons Learned. Over time the contents will be added to, modified and some items deleted as our knowledge and experience grow and the situation evolves over time.
Hope that answers your question.

Basic Campaigning Lessons Learned
I worked in NH for a month leading up to that primary with Operation
Live Free or Die. Many thoughts, but one quick one for now: DON'T DO ALL DAY SIGN WAVES!
For someone like Ron Paul, sign waves are actually more of an energy
booster/fun time for the activists. We have to get the meetup/local groups
going early--ready and trained in the basics of call center and canvassing work. Too often I saw (across the country) full days being taken up by giant and, yes, amazing sign waves--when that time could have been better used targeting likely voters on the phones and door-to-door canvasing. I know it isn't sexy to say this---but it is 100% true. It doesn't mean we don't have sign waves---it means that they are scheduled as energy boosting rallying times between real political feet-on-the-ground work. Here is an example of a wasted sign wave day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md4yBfvSCjo
Actually, I lied---you can watch that video and learn how to do a massively successful sign wave---and it was Dec. 24th - so it wasn't the best time for walking door to door or calling - however, my point still stands - there is no excuse for thinking that a sign wave is hard-core activism. It's just a fun rallying time. There is no need for activities like these to go on for all day.

Agree
Particularly regarding call centers. I think call centers are very efficient use of time/money. We were quite late getting that operation organized IMO.

distance the fringe
I am not trying to control anyone, but I would suggest that people that want to push 9-11 truth, chemtrailing, Birther ideas, jewish banking cartel theories do so far away from the liberty campaigns. I would not want anyone to stop spreading the truth, ever, but understand it doesn't take much to make one of our candidates look very bad. So if you want to go to a 9-11 truth rally, do it, and do it well, just please don't bring your Ron Paul sign, etc...
i totally agree
these are all important topics to explore. and i would not urge you to stop spreading what you know about them.
but you are drowning out the message when you try to do too much at once.
when you go to rallies, and protests, please do not be tempted to ride in on the coat tails of other themes. first, ask yourself what you are trying to achieve.
attendees of an end the fed rally will want to stick to the message of sound money, fiscal conservatism, history, and austrian economics.
don't shoot yourself in the foot by bluring the messages with unrelated topics that aren't easily digestible.
Good Comments on VERY TOUCHY SUBJECTS
that were bound to come up eventually, surprised it took this long. I would have said Great Comments and (Elvis like) Thank You Very Much but this topic is so HOT (9/11 Truth in particular) that I would not want to offend anyone with an opinion.
Not taking a position on this(nor is my opinion on anything here in this thread any greater/less than any other DP'ers opinion) but would like to say just two things:
1. 9/11 Truth people-there are many here, they are very passionate, active, please appreciate them all as very well meaning brother/sister Patriots whatever your view of that topic.
2. NOT Blurring the message-I hope this approach can be peacefully accepted. No need to argue merits or for/against Hot Button Topics or getting personal about those holding views at odds with your own. Keeping such matters to their own separate, single issue events seems to me to be a logical and non-confrontational way to resolve how to address this without offending anyone. RP rally, gathering, event keep things limited to issues RP would freely choose to expound upon, that RP wishes to address. If at some point RP of his own volition starts raising 9/11 as a top issue then bring your 9/11 signs to RP events.

One of the specific things I had in mind for Lessons Learned, something I have been considering/intending to propose for a long time, is preserving what was learned from the Louisiana GOP PTB shenanigans. I did not think that would be addressed so soon nor with as much insight as you have provided. Thank you very much. I gather you live in LA?
Thanks to all for all your excellent and thoughtful comments.
From what I have seen so far I think it may help to slightly alter the concept to LL1=Brief Intro for Newbies and LL2=much more detailed and not space limited, permanent record of ALL Lessons Learned from all of our experiences.

BEGIN the CAUCUS process EARLY
Our biggest failing in Louisiana was two-fold.
One: we were not aware of the need to switch voter registration to republican sufficiently in advance so as to avoid the dirty tricks of using "old lists" of voters.
We also should not have filed all of our delegates as a block but should have let them be independently mailed in. We did it as a block under the fear that they could be individually rejected and it would be difficult to fight back. In reality, all this did was alert the GOP to our support for Dr. Paul and that prompted them to change their own rules to allow later filings so other people could get on the ballot to defeat us.
Two: we failed to consider the pro-life angle that would be used in our heavily conservative state. We should have known better. (and I take the blame here as much as anyone else) EVERY election in this state involves if not hinges on, the candidates "pro-life" record. While some candidates who are pro-choice can get elected, if you are not coming out swinging as a pro-life candidate as a republican - good luck.
We were sandbagged at the caucus with handbills for "pro-life" delegates. Not that our delegates weren't or that Dr. Paul isn't 100% pro-life. We just didn't think to come out swinging on this issue.
While these may be specific to Louisiana, they are lessons everyone should take heed of.
Knowing your deadlines for filing, voter registration, etc. that allow you to participate is crucial. Knowing where some local decisions are made and how to get elected to those bodies is essential.
Designing a campaign strategy based on what voters expect and what is traditionally used in your state is critical. It can make the difference between winning and losing.
Remember, state conventions and caucuses are geared in many states to STATE issues and writing the state platform. If you come out campaigning to fight for traditional republican values and preventing the party from being "hi-jacked" by the neo-cons aka Lindsey Graham types, then you will be ahead of the curve.
If however, you allow the neo-cons to claim the YOU are hi-jacking the party, you are destined to lose.

RUN COMMERCIALS OURSELVES.
There is no need to wait for the Paul campaign to approve commercials and run them. Jeremiah Black produced some excellent ads that were never used.
I say this time around, we fund those and similar ads directly through our own PACs. That will also relieve a burden on reporting requirements for the Paul campaign.
The best parts of the last campaign and the most effective activities were those that came from the grass roots and not from the campaign headquarters. In fact, the WORST moves came from HQ.
Detournement
what about subvertisements? We take what they are selling and turn it back on them, I think it's called Detournement.
Just read cool book by the AdBusters guy, it's called "culture jam" most of what he says is environmental socialism crap, but the methods are cool.
Love and freedom MUST be promoted together
The classical liberal view -- the view of the Founders, in fact -- was that freedom was important in part because government coercion was cruelty, by its very nature, and that it tended to grow and thus to cause ever-more misery to the people.
Compassion, in other words, was a major factor in advocating and creating a small, highly restrained government.
The Founders had it right: Love and freedom are actually a duality in human life, and each quality is dependent on the other. Consider:
* Treating someone with coercion (denying them freedom) is not loving; it is anti-love. Police states, for example, are toxic to love.
* A free society without a widespread sense of compassionate connection to others (i.e., without love) cannot stay free for long; love is the lubricant and anti-corrosive for honest market activity and provides the impetus to charity and to other healthy human action. A nation of emotionally damaged people (Germany leading up to the Hitler years, for example -- Alice Miller is a good source here) is in grave danger of becoming a nightmare, no matter what the original political system might be.
The understanding that love and freedom require each other and are a yin/yang type duality (or yin and yang aspects in life, if you prefer) has been lost and the lie that these qualities are at odds with each other has used in clever ways by the power elite. Government is seen (by the left) as the bringer of compassion while market action (actually pseudo-market action, because it's mostly corporatistism) is seen as "freedom" by many on the right. In both cases, big government is the supposed answer, even for those who think they are advocating the market -- see most of the GOP for that last.
People WANT, and rightfully so, a social doctrine that embodies compassion. People also want freedom, although they have increasingly been taught to fear the resulting responsibility and to believe freedom equals lack of concern for others.
The freedom movement desperately needs to actively repair the public's understanding that love and freedom require each other. Until this is done, we will never gain acceptance by the majority.
Two more points: First, love and freedom exist in somewhat different realms and must be approached differently:
Freedom requires the non-aggression principle, which can and must be stated as a command: "Do not agress against others."
But love and compassion are inner states, and attempting to enforce them via coercion or even to pay for compassionate works or programs via coercive funding leads to disaster; in addition, the coercion itself harms love directly.
Thus: It is important that our universal brotherhood be widely and explicitly acknowledged and lived up to, and it is equally important that we not allow coercion to be used in its expression.
The second point is that early experience is what later experience, attitudes, and actions are based upon, and young humans are rapidly growing complex systems -- meaning that it is extremely important that the young be treated well. Widespread coercion and other cruelty to children makes it far more difficult to move a society in the direction of freedom, and especially to create a workable and sustainable free society.
Dr. Paul often talks about compassion, but I wish he -- and those who support him -- would frequently and explicitly talk about the facts that love and freedom REQUIRE each other; that love (unlike freedom) cannot be mandated by law and imposed by force; and that the young -- actually, pregnant mothers, newborns, infants, and children -- absolutely MUST be properly cared for and treated compassionately if we expect positive long-term results.
Summerhill School and Sudbury Valley School are excellent examples of freedom for children and the benefits they offer; Dr. Leboyer and other advocates for gentle birth and for compassionate treatment of the very young are also worth learning and talking about.

Great points, beautifully(Lovingly) expressed and very thoughtful, thank you very much.

Oh, thanks for the opportunity
to put it into words. I have been here about two years and I have learned so much. Some of the things I have learned is.
1) Controlled Opposition is a tactic that those in power use to make us think we have choices but in reality they CONTROLL all sides of the argument that is why we are in this predicament.
2) The money masters control the politicians, military and the media. They don't have to control everyone just the ones who make decisions. A lot of good people are doing bad things because they were TOLD it is part of their job.
3) Voting is a joke because they control the machines. Until we can get honest elections we are in trouble.
4) There is an agenda and it is right on schedule and if you think the laws are just dumb and the politicians are just stupid then it shows you have a lot to learn.
5) There are events that are called falseflags which our own country does in order to get people to do are think a certain way. The term is a military term our own military coined.
6) Eisenhower warned us of the "Military Industrial Complex"
7) I learned that just because people my use sound bits that we agree with that is no reason to trust there is a phrase " trust but VERIFY" and it is good advice.
8. I learned to keep an open mind and not be to quick to criticize because new information comes forth everyday.
9. I learned that we all have talents and that we must use them to help further the cause to bring forth information so people can make good decisions.
10. I have made use of google and Youtube there is lots of info good and bad out there and to bring it here to the Daily Paul so we can inspect it and discuss it. I have discovered that this journey is better when we go down the rabbit hole together.
Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.

yeppers
The people who control this country (the people who can pull off the false flag attacks) have no allegiance to the people of this country or to the land on which we live. Borders are just fluid playthings, as history clearly demonstrates. The lines on the map are temporary and subject to change. The powers that be know this, and they exploit the naive nationalism of the expendable people. Politics and war are just games, and the people are just pawns, easily manipulated through the media.
a note on decorum
You know how people on the internet will write the rudest things that they would probably never say to someone in person?
I've certainly done that. I get passionately angry about a particular disagreement on some philosophical subject...and the next thing you know, I've typed away some comment typical of a bigoted jerk.
Lesson learned?
The core value of individual liberty trumps my own opinions. If I'm engaged in a discussion of something heated where libertarians disagree (meow!), I should make every effort to err on the side of respect for the other person. We can probably find a way to express opposing views with dignity.
It's cold outside. Please come in and enjoy the warmth of the libertarian fire with us.
