Hey Chicken man... I have a question.
Or a.k.a Mike Lawson... I have a question. I'm in North Fla and we're starting to get cold. Tonight prob about 40ish, but as the winter sets in I'm worried for my chickens. I'm new to this and thus far it has been pretty uneventful, feed them, water them, worm them, clean the pen etc and you get a bounty of eggs and much delight but as the season gets colder do I need to consider heating their coup? I have only lived here a few years but have seen temps around 28degrees. Can about 6 chickens in a well built coup stand those kind of tempertures for a night? They have lots of hay and one shelf of single box rooms and a row of unseparted hay beds.
I'm thinking they will huddle together and keep each other warm, but before it gets to cold was wondering if I need to do more for them.

The Silver Laced Wyandotte
The Silver Laced Wyandotte is a good layer in cold weather
"The Silver Laced is the original Wyandotte and the other varieties were developed from it later with crosses on other breeds. It is an outstanding example of American poultry breeding ingenuity and is one of the most beautiful breeds. It is colorful, hardy, and productive. The broadfeathered, smooth fitting plumage is sharply marked. The general appearance is silvery white and lustrous greenish black as each feather is edged in a contrasting color. The close-fitting rose comb and good body size are valuable assets for winter laying. Cold weather doesn't seem to bother them at all as their hardiness and vigor keep them laying straight through the winter. They lay a nicely shaped, good sized egg, varying from light to rich brown and will set some. This is another excellent variety for exhibition. Baby chicks vary from almost black to light silvery gray and many have contrasting light and dark stripes on the back."
This is where I get my chicks.

P.S. Did you know that chicks, just before they hatch, draw into their adomen the yolk of the egg? Rich in food value and liquid, the yolk provides the newly-hatched chick with all it needs to eat and drink for over 3 days. That is why day old hatched chicks can be sent through the mail.

I like chickens (I had barred rocks and frizzles before) and I may break down and get some next spring.
I would need to build a covered chicken run because I have hawks and not any bushes for cover.
They should be ok..
especially if your insulated and they don't have a huge space to heat up..if they have large area to huddle in at night you might consider making them a "huddle box"...or in other words making that space that they roost smaller to hold in more heat...I spoil my chickens so that they get a heater even here in Oklahoma...it is set for 35 degrees...LOL Spoiled brats.
Our half dozen do just fine right on through the winter...
Here in VT. Just keep em fed and watered.
I couldn't resist posting this---
John was in the fertilized egg business.
He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,'and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.
He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.
This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters.
Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing.
Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.
John's favorite rooster, Hussein, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed Hussein's bell hadn't rung at all!
When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover.
To John's amazement, Hussein had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring.
He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.
John was so proud of Hussein, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.
The result was the judges not only awarded Hussein the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.
Clearly Hussein was a politician in the making.
Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.
Vote carefully, the bells are not always audible.

Mine really like pine needles.
I've got pine trees everywhere so it's free for me....and hay is not.
Just a cost-effective suggestion for fellow patriots.
pine needles are great..
hay and straw work but they harbor mites and lice pretty badly..but then there are precautions for that too.
Lol, what's up with the chickens on DP?
