It's Drudge trying to add sensationalism, emulating the old "above the fold" headlines from when newspapers were king.

you wouldn't think of "running for the hills." There is nothing there to save you. (and I know the area the author wrote about) The best thing to do is shelter in place and fight it out. Unless you live in a large city (over 100k) then get the hell out at the first sign of trouble. (large cities have morons for leaders and will turn to communism as a solution in disaster. This will of course ensure a 90%+ die-off of the population, which is the intended result by such city leaders so there are more resources for themselves.)

The safest places to be when it all comes down is going to be not too far inland, and near plenty of growing food and wild game with a relatively low population density. If anything major happens that is where your best chance of survival is.

By having a low pop density compared to food stock, you will not be in danger of starvation. Also, small populations tend to weather a crises better and stick together and help each other compared to large cities that will turn on each other. Being within a a few days walk of the coast (about 50 miles) will put you closer to relief aid since it will most likely hit the ports first. (though port cities themselves are too large and would be dangerous)

If there are any emergency preparedness types or civil leaders in government reading this, you really need to throw out any prepared plans for rationing and seizure of supplies in a communist fashion. Read up on the Plymouth colony and how they survived. (and why they almost didn't)

Central planning has NEVER worked, and especially in an emergency, it will fail miserably. The only thing the people need is to be educated on their own preparedness, and for you to maintain civil order. (crime naturally increases in an emergency by those who are not prepared, and so you have to do both - preparedness and increased crime patrol)

If you think central planning is the only answer in an emergency I invite you to study history of places like the USSR, Hitler's Germany, and the middle ages. The more controlled everything was, especially the distribution of resources, the more starvation, disease, and crime there was.

The only thing a local civil government really needs to do in the way of its own preparedness is to:
1) be able to recognize and identify the nature of the problem within minutes. The first 24 hours are critical in any disaster.
2) stockpile medicines, radios, and first aid supplies. Other than food, these are the most in demand and the first to be looted in a disaster. They are also the largest reason for die-off. Medicines especially, since many people cannot stockpile their own back up supplies of prescription strength items. Distribution TO your town will be the worst problem in a major event like pestilence, nuclear war, or EMP. (and even a really bad hurricane)
3) constantly drill and prepare your citizens on how to prepare themselves personally for all conceivable disasters. Petition your state legislators and governors to re-institute the militia laws for civil defense and disaster preparedness. (NOW, not after the event occurs, people need to be trained and ready to go into action)
