Massive spending vs National bankruptcy

I sincerely doubt that both exist.

Obviously, there is massive spending. So that means we really aren't on the verge of bankruptcy.

The US GDP is $14,441,425,000,000 (14 trillion). The US debt is about $10 trillion. That is a 14T annual income versus a one time 10T debt (with low interest I might add). That is like making $140,000 per year and having $100,000 in low interest debt (like say a house). Who here wouldn't like to make $140,000 per year with only $100,000 mortgage?

I would...in fact, that is about my situation.

And for those who say, "what if China suddenly said, 'pay up'?"...well, what if they did. The US would say "No...and if you try to take it by force, we'll nuke you to the Tang Dynasty."

BTW: You do know that China is in as much debt as we are. In fact, most countries have debt. IT'S HOW THEY RUN THINGS AT A NATIONAL LEVEL! Many accountants believe that individuals should also have this "good" debt. They say that the debt is good because it can be spent on things that make more money than the loan interest fees.

Personally, I disagree that individuals should have debt, but the risks that individuals have with debt is much different than the debt the US has.

So "income eligible

So "income eligible household" is the new politically correct term for "welfare recipient".

Free brain tumors. Typical

Free brain tumors. Typical government program. They give them to people who already have sick brains.

I'm not too surprised by this. When I worked for my state's welfare department, at least half of the phone numbers on record for each recipient were outdated and the agency had no means of contacting them. I guarantee that it costs a lot more taxpayer money trying to track them down when this happens than it does to give them a cheap cell phone. Before people start screaming about welfare queens, many of these people were either homeless or too poor to afford rent and had to bounce between the homes of their friends and family (it's very difficult to get Section 8). Giving them a cell phone not only gives the welfare department a way of keeping in touch with them, but it might even help them get a job. It's difficult for employers to contact you when the number you put on a job application is is outdated by the end of the month.

If they are that tough to get ahold of

maybe they should just quit giving them checks.
I have a feeling they'll be much easier to find, if their check doesn't show up.

Much cheaper than giving out free cell phones.

That doesn't solve of the

That doesn't solve of the issue of helping these people get jobs or an education and off welfare, which is difficult to do without a reliable phone number. Giving them the tools to get off welfare is a more pro-active solution than simply sending a check and otherwise ignoring them.

True to his word I guess

Spreading the wealth, err our tax dollars. Whatever president or congress started this, it's just another example of misuse of tax payer money. It wouldn't be if they let the public in on it for a vote, but you know what the response for that would be, a big NO!

This is not an "Obama" phone

This program has been around before Obama. Phony partisan Left/Right BS. It is more bread and circus for the masses. Fight against that.

Won't all those "free" cell

Won't all those "free" cell phones make some else rich? Say maybe the CEO of LG or Motorola might make get a handsome Bonus for being so nice! Afterall, the "Free" phones probably cost 3 times as much as what you or I would pay. Remember the $2500 gold plated hammer sold to the military?

It will make some rich people richer

They will be retailing extra minutes soon. Funny how THAT side of the welfare isn't discussed. Dirty poor people.

It beats bankers getting trillions

I'd rather a poor person have a cell phone than a banker have a yacht. In today's economy (caused by the guys with the yachts), having a cell phone and being able to get calls right away could be the difference between putting food on the table or not.
