Wife wants to get daughter the DTaP. Should I do it? Need Info.

My wife and I are now expecting our second child. My wife is concerned about the possibility of our 15 month old getting sick with Pertussis and her contracting it since it can purportedly damage the fetus. My daughter has never been given a vaccine to date and has been completely healthy except for the flu a couple months ago that she kicked easily. Though we dont believe in the safety of vaccines in general, my wife thinks my daughter needs the DTaP vaccine for protection during the pregnancy, but I am trying to discourage her from it, but I am running out of ammo.
Need advice. What is really in this thing? Can there be side effects? Any info would be appreciated.

If you do make the decision in order to calm your wife's fears

Consider just giving an immunization for a single disease---just whooping cough, if that is her fear.Vaccines for 3 diseases at a time are a greater assault on a small child.
I have also read that the single dose vaccines do not contain the adjuvants such as thimerosol, as they are added to prevent contamination in multi-dose vials.
The doctor can order 1 dose at a time.
I also haven't heard that Pertussis can harm a fetus. The only disease I know that can harm a fetus is rubella--the very mild 3 day measles. It can cause birth defects is what they say.
Another thing to find out----that I wonder about? How many of the diseases that we vaccinate for will respond to antibiotics or conventional remedies?
Most older folks had the red measles, mumps, chicken pox, rubella, whooping cough, etc. We survived in a day that there weren't any antibiotics.
My two older children had the red measles. The first to contract it was very sick, they gave his sister a gamma globulin shot which caused the disease to be milder for her. Another thing to consider is that children who died from the red measles statistically, most likely died from secondary infections because there were NO antibiotics to treat the infection.

I have a friend that has 10 kids...

she got the first 4 vaccinated before she learned how dangerous vaccines are. Well, a bunch of them came down with whooping cough including the 4 who were "immunized". If the vaccine works, why did ALL 4 vaccinated ones get it? By the way, they all did fine with it and they all recovered from it just fine.

Have your wife read the following info if she loves daughter

I'm assuming it will be in the form of the DPT shot?

The Pertussis vaccine - among MANY dangers - is thought to be the main culprit in SIDS deaths.

pertussis vaccine

I would never think to put that in a child, but that is a personal choice. The vaccine was developed in the 1930's and put into use in 1940's. It was known to cause collapse of shock-like state (SIDS), acute encephalopathy and premanent brain damage. After only (sarcastic) 50 years, did the CDC have concerns of safety and make a more purified vaccine in 1996, but the first version of the vaccine was still being used in 2001. A vaccinated child has a .05% chance of developing severe systemic effects, one being a fever greater then 105 degrees, collapse or shock like episodes and persistent crying lasting more then three hours. So the chances of contracting the illness is (.0555%) compared to the chances of developing side effects from the vaccine (.05 %) and the chances of dying from the illness is (.00011%).
These are numbers based on CDC figures. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk and vaccinate my dog, let alone a small child. I got this info from a very interesting book by a Dr. Todd M. Elsner, "What the Pharmaceutical Companies Don't Want You to Know About Vaccines". I'm a grandmother so my interest is in the science behind all this vaccine propaganda and this book was very informative. Almost too much because now I have a very sound reason to believe my one son got cancer as a child from a contaminated polio vaccine. It's a personal choice, but read, read, read. It's your childs life. I think vaccines are just plain bad science.

Here is the "Pro Vaccination" information..

In very rare cases (far less than 1 out of
10,000 shots given, or about 0.003%) children
have a serious reaction.

 Serious reactions include breathing difficulty
and shock, and severe brain reaction (long
seizure, coma, or lowered consciousness).
If you do notice any moderate or serious
reactions, you should call your doctor
immediately.

Your child’s chance of being harmed by these
diseases is far greater than any chance of
being harmed by the vaccine.
Immunizations are one of the most important
ways parents can protect their children

MY 2 cents... You guys are saying there is a 3.3/100,000 chance of getting the illness, and they are saying a 1/10,000 chance of a coma or something similar...kind of makes that statement look foolish doesn't it? "Your child’s chance of being harmed by these diseases is far greater than any chance of being harmed by the vaccine."

Also, "Pertussis (Whooping cough) causes glue-like
mucus and coughing spells so severe that it
is hard for infants to eat, drink, or breathe.
Pertussis can lead to pneumonia, seizures,
brain damage, and death. Approximately 50
out of every 10,000 people who develop
pertussis die from the disease and many
more suffer permanent damage. The vaccine
effectively protects at least 71% of children
who receive the full series of shots. Children
who have been vaccinated but do develop the
disease will usually have a milder case."

so 3.3/100,000 to contract it then approx 50 out of every 10,000 people who develop it die....quick math... 10,000/3.3 = 3030 X 100,000 = 303,000,000

So basically we're looking at 50 people or less (if everyone in the country got vaccinated) that die from this disease if I did my math correctly (can't guarantee it)

But if they were all vaccinated.. 303,000,000/10,000=30,300 would have a serious reaction including coma or death...

Oh yes and the vaccine protects a whopping 71% of those taking it... so even at those numbers... 303,000,000*.29= 87,870,000 wouldn't be protected anyway

Now let's figure that the vaccine earns the pharm company $20...if everyone took it (pretending there are 303 million people) 303,000,000 * 20 = $6,060,000,000 so over 6 billion dollars in revenue for those odds?...tell me there aren't some kickbacks and lobbying going on. :O)

Hmmm I personally don't like the odds on that one

CDC website info follows..

However, a vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. The risk of DTaP vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small.

Moderate Problems (Uncommon)

* Seizure (jerking or staring) (about 1 child out of 14,000)
* Non-stop crying, for 3 hours or more (up to about 1 child out of 1,000)
* High fever, 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher (about 1 child out of 16,000)

Severe Problems (Very Rare)
Serious allergic reaction (less than 1 out of a million doses) Several other severe problems have been reported after DTaP vaccine. These include:

* Long-term seizures, coma, or lowered consciousness
* Permanent brain damage.

More.... http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/side-effects.htm#dtap

Also remember that those

Also remember that those serious reactions are looked for within 2 weeks of being given the shot. If your child is healthy it most likey won't show any signs of a negative reaction. Any brain impairment, small neurological damage, later auto-immune disease or cancer would never register as an adverse reaction.

It is like buying a car and if it doesn't explode within 2 weeks of use its perfectly safe. I work as a safety engineer and can tell you that the definition for safe for vaccines is extremely narrowly defined. There are no good studies on long term effects for vaccines.

As the person I'm replying to has pointed out, the chance for getting the virus is 3.3/100,000 and the chance for an immediate severe reaction is 1/10,000. Not to mention that getting the virus doesn't guarantee any long term effects or death.

Give her massive ammounts of Vitamin D

Seriously, that's a much better way to immunize yourself then vaccination.

Personal decision.

However, a quick web search shows average incidence of Pertussis in the US to be 3.3 per 100,000 people each year.

If you think your daughter might win the Pertussis Lottery, and be one of the 3 in a mid-sized city that actually contracts it, then maybe you might think about vaccinating.

However, if you were like me, who has never known or even heard about anybody in my entire life getting pertussis, then I wouldn't consider the risk worthy of vaccinating against.

It comes down to the odds.
What are the odds that a vaccination reaction might injure or kill your child?
What are the odds of getting pertussis?

If your child is never actually exposed to pertussis, and never would have contracted the disease, then you've unnecessarily exposed the child to the risks of vaccination reaction, unnecessarily.

My thoughts exactly...

surely there is some reaction information out there...but where?
