Non-linear, transformative group processes are necessary.
Hello all. I think that one thing that makes our country vulnerable is that we don't have ways to get people in our communities to really engage in meaningful conversations. Town hall meetings are nothing. I'm talking about ways that communities can start making self-aware decisions without the dictates of a higher governmental body. Imagine this, we talk about de-centralized government, but then we ignore the fact that we still need order! This movement isn't focused very much on finding ways to get people working together.
What we need, I propose, are non-linear, transformative group processes. This goes beyond normal facilitative meetings or dialogue circles. This is a whole new thing entirely and it's not very well known about. These processes are ways for a group to come to unanimous conclusions WITHOUT sacrificing anyone's opinions, individuality, or liberty.
We talk about getting rid of big government, but that only means the WE must become the governing bodies, and if we don't know how to get along DESPITE OUR DIFFERENCES then we are just as screwed, if not more so.
I've been delving into this topic for over a year and now have a podcast that deals with some of these issues. Episode 6 is about circle organizations, wisdom councils, creative insight councils, and the transformation and breakthrough of society. The guest, Jim Rough, sees the Wisdom Council process as a way to engage in an on-going, nationwide constitutional convention.

Bump for a timely
pro active solution.
Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.
I second that bump for 'timeliness'
"We talk about getting rid of big government, but that only means the WE must become the governing bodies, and if we don't know how to get along DESPITE OUR DIFFERENCES then we are just as screwed, if not more so."
Thank you, Sancho! You are exactly right and I love the direction towards finding solutions..we are all well aware of the problems!
I'm glad I saved this to review! (Your quote above would be a great tagline reminder! )
Peace!

Yes it is timely, for sure.
Yes it is timely, for sure. Once I started looking outside the normal acitivist toolbox, it took a while, but I started finding some really great stuff and now it's hard to not proseletyze to the revolution! But truly, we're all talking about de-centralizing but we're so lacking on any beginnings of a how-to aside from the dire survivalist perspective which doesn't include group and community work.
Just keep in mind, this stuff isn't about "problem solving" "group think" or "brain storming". Choice Creation. That is the operative term here.

Your so right and I am so
guilty that I am not involved locally.
Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.
You know what I'm not able
You know what I'm not able to get locally involved at the moment because I'm in a new town temporarily, kids take up my entire weekends, etc. but we can still learn these tools and new paradigms so that when the moment presents itself we will have these wonderful tools at our disposal. Learn dynamic facilitation and the world cafe process for instance, then maybe you attend a town meeting and introduce the idea of holding some sort of open meeting with the whole town, inviting everyone, to discuss what's on their mind. Frame it as something to engage the community and create togetherness(which helps reduce some crime) instead of a "freedom and liberty" action and you're likely to attract many people who otherwise aren't interested in this movement. These processes are all about relying on diverse perspectives.

It's one reason why I like the Grange so much
And it's why many others enjoy fraternal organizations where, as a community, we come together to talk about issues, write resolutions, and get action by local government, and state government.
The Grange has 9 halls in my county. We meet on several levels, locally, county, state, and nationally, where we have an 11 story building localted in Washington.
Besides this, there is Toast Masters, that helps people not just learn to make public speaches, but can help you get that speach out.
During the elections, candidates come to our pancake breakfasts, we serve over 400 people, and they pour coffee and talk to the community.
My county has more registered voters per capita than any in CA. We have stopped GMF from being grown here, we have kept state prisons and corporations from developing here. We localize. We established a Food Forest in the high school, the middle school and elementary school are all growing food, we have canning classes, belly dancing, permaculture, we support SPCA and many animal organizations and hold adoptions, low cost vaccination clinics, hardware tool sales, we have dances and dinners and, we have guilting camps.. three days of guilting for $50 and that includes wonderful meals..
Because the Grange is established.. groups that started a number of years ago were trying to be a Grange, they just didn't know what a Grange was. They came to the Grange and became hooked, because we are a fraternity, members are brothers and sisters and we respect each other and our differences.
You're right Sancho 23, people need something.. those folks who come tot the Granges' breakfasts.. they stay for hours talking about everything we talk about here, and more.
Here is a peek at one Grange tradition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I6JXl78Oog&feature=related

Sound interesting and very
Sound interesting and very much something that is of benefit to your community and in a post-collapse situation they might be the best asset your community has because the level of networking and unity in the group will be part of the new template.
Also, you mentioned permaculture and I think that is something also that is very key for this movement to pick up on. Seeing the ways in which nature works and using that to our own advantage for the benefit of nature and society. Every crisis is an opportunity. There is both good philosophy and good practice in those design principles.

Great web page Sancho23
The Patron of Husbandry was established in 1867 post Civil War as a way for farmers to continue working and restablishing agriculture communities. The Change is The Grange, which would do well in incorporate your pod cast.

Hey Granger
Does one have to take an oath of loyalty and secrecy to join "the Grange?
Yep, and we take them very seriously
