The large-scale government intervention in the economy is going to end badly

Any number of pundits claim that we have now passed the worst of the recession. Green shoots of recovery are supposedly popping up all around the country, and the economy is expected to resume growing soon at an annual rate of 3% to 4%. Many of these are the same people who insisted that the economy would continue growing last year, even while it was clear that we were already in the beginning stages of a recession.

A false recovery is under way. I am reminded of the outlook in 1930, when the experts were certain that the worst of the Depression was over and that recovery was just around the corner. The economy and stock market seemed to be recovering, and there was optimism that the recession, like many of those before it, would be over in a year or less. Instead, the interventionist policies of Hoover and Roosevelt caused the Depression to worsen, and the Dow Jones industrial average did not recover to 1929 levels until 1954. I fear that our stimulus and bailout programs have already done too much to prevent the economy from recovering in a natural manner and will result in yet another asset bubble.

Anytime the central bank intervenes to pump trillions of dollars into the financial system, a bubble is created that must eventually deflate. We have seen the results of Alan Greenspan's excessively low interest rates: the housing bubble, the explosion of subprime loans and the subsequent collapse of the bubble, which took down numerous financial institutions. Rather than allow the market to correct itself and clear away the worst excesses of the boom period, the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury colluded to put taxpayers on the hook for trillions of dollars. Those banks and financial institutions that took on the largest risks and performed worst were rewarded with billions in taxpayer dollars, allowing them to survive and compete with their better-managed peers.

"How can we justify to the unemployed and underemployed in the United States the incredible cost of maintaining a global empire?" - Dr. Ron Paul

I learned from Ron Paul

and the rEVOLution that I don't need a leader.

Ron Paul does not even wish to be our "leader." He carries a message like many before him and asks us to pick up and carry the message of freedom, liberty and personal responsibility.

Thanks for posting the

Thanks for posting the article, but please don't call Ron Paul "our great leader"... It makes us sound like we're some Obama-like cult... Plus, Ron Paul isn't my "leader".... He might be your "leader" (whatever that means), but he's not mine...

He's just an honest congressman with a good understanding of freedom, world history and Austrian economics.

La di FREAKIN da. Not

La di FREAKIN da. Not surprised one of you were the first to give a "look at me" comment.

It is a point tho...

Ron Paul is not now, nor will ever be my ~leader~, unless he is elected President in which case I will support the hell outa him.

I'll probably do whatever is humanly possible to get him into that post, as well.... I did a lot the last time.

However, he is NOT ~my leader~ in this fight.. I am, and always will be my own leader until he takes that post.

To some people that just seems like semantics.. to others, it is the whole point.

Freedom is not Ron Paul.... although he would certainly help!

~Live life to its fullest, with an open heart, open arms and most important... an open mind~

It IS just semantics. Leader

It IS just semantics. Leader does NOT mean Fuhrer. I am not surprised that self-absorbed libertarians, and ESPECIALLY anarchists like October would fuss over this non-issue. Libertarians are famous for changing their opinions to avoid being seen as "too moderate" or "too mainstream", even within their own movement.

lol

I did not notice your reply until I left my own. This is one of the key differences between this political movement and all the rest.

Not my leader, but he is my hero

I had a hardcore socialist friend say "I saw your hero on TV last night." He meant it in a derogatory way.

I thought about it for a moment.

A doctor who treated Medicare and Medicaid patients for free or at a discount.

A doctor that delivered over 4,000 babies.

A congressman who ALWAYS votes with Constitution.

A congressman who is not afraid to be the lone NO vote.

A congressman who does not accept the congressional pension plan.

A man who runs and cycles every day to stay fit and healthy.

A man who has been married to the same woman for 50 years.

A man who has raised a good family that he loves and who love him.

Any of those people are worthy of my respect.

When all of those things describe ONE person, to me, that person is a hero.

I told that socialist friend he was right. Ron Paul is my hero.

well said!

There are not enough heroes anymore. And Ron Paul is a great one.

Dr. Paul is right on as usual. Some of the comments show the readers inability to see reality.

Thank you bump
