Any paulites here who can vote in Newark CA?

My wife and fellow Ron Paul supporter, Nadja Adolf, is running for city council there. (Election tomorrow. Thought I'd at least mention it here.)

Some of you may know her as the woman who "killed a million mommies", from when she discovered that the Million Mom March was living off government money at the San Francisco Hospital and Oakland Children's Hospital, got together with Jim March, and got them kicked out.

Her big issues in Newark are: Opposing a new utility tax and replacing a rezoning that would loot the city and build slums in the existing middle-income neighborhoods with one that would encourage construction of small, expandable, privately-owned housing.

So if you're a Newark CA voter, google her name and/or check out the yahoo group sustanablenewark. Then if you agree with her positions you might want to vote for her.

She's not taking contributions this election cycle. Just votes (and whatever word-of-mouth campaigning those who like her might do in the time remaining.)

good

news

Congratulations!

I ran for a local seat last year, but lost by 7% of the vote. Very frustrating, but now I know how to win, next time.

My biggest detriment was the signs. Gotta get those signs out at least a month before the absentee ballots show up. The election is pretty much already determined the moment those mail-ins get sent out.

If I can get name recognition out early, then I'm a shoe-in, next time.

Thank you for your efforts!

Update: We beat Measure L and Nadja got a thousand votes.

The measure L utility tax failed by ten votes. The city government spent something like $40,000 for a hand recount and the totals didn't change by a single vote. B-)

Nadja got a thousand votes (the incumbents got just about 3000 each). Not bad for a first shot by someone who started less than two months before the election, used word-of-mouth, and didn't spend a CENT on campaigning. (She was expecting a couple hundred.)

This is apparently the largest showing in years by any council challenger and is resulting in significant post-election attention from the press.

Note that this is a "vote for two" election and most of the voters did (apparently not realizing that a vote for the others was half a vote against Nadja). So the official returns (which express totals as percent of council votes cast rather than voters voting) say 14.3% when her actual fraction of those voting for council was more like 28%.

Nadja is happy with the result: Part of the point of the run was to break the "There's no hope of change" mindset among the residents. Getting this far from a standing start shows that a better-prepared campaign has a chance to go all the way. Maybe next time we can have a slate. B-)

Election day is here.

... and the news stations act like there's nothing of interest going on in Newark. (Sound familiar?)

We've had "torches and pitchforks" crowds at the planning commission meetings - to the point that the latest one had several uniformed cops guarding the meeting (apparently to make sure the old folks didn't lynch the planning commissioner B-) ). City council meetings on zoning and Measure L ditto. They made some of the televised congressional town meetings look tame. But to hear the media all the opposition to new protect-the-city-from-the-recession (on the backs of the poor and retirees) taxes are in a couple other bay area cities.

Sierra club endorsed the incumbents - who support building a golf course on the wetlands and wildlife refuge - over Nadja who opposes it - because (they say) they want a "working relationship" with the current incumbents. This has caused quite a stir among the local club members.

The local paper endorsed the incumbents, too. Said Nadja should have gotten experience - like by being on the planning commission (which requires an appointment by the mayor B-) ). Contrasted one incumbents' support for building a new school (on the wetlands) with Nadja's opposition to the golf course. But the incumbent supports the plan to tear out another school (in the neighborhoods) and facilities of several others, versus Nadja's call to maintain and reuse them. (Why spend a bunch of money tearing out perfectly good schools and then spend more to build new ones - away from where the kids, and the people paying the taxes, are?) Similarly with the other incumbent, who wants to tear out the current old downtown and build another shopping center when we already have one that's gone bankrupt and others where the stores were closing even before the recession.

Good luck, and I suspect

Good luck, and I suspect you're going to need it. Challenging incumbents in local races are not the easiest thing to do. Very few potential voters spend much time watching news that local, and the fewest have much of an idea whose decision leads to what. Heck, here in the Bay Area, it seems like most people thinks every new water fountain was put there by Obama, and every broken one was due to Bush.

.

Anybody KNOW anybody in Newark CA?

Thanks again.

If none of the other denizens of the board are in Newark CA, do you KNOW anybody there you could ping?
