Survey for Sociology Class -- Could Use a Little Help
Hey Everyone,
I had to choose a topic for a paper/short presentation due in a couple weeks for my sociology class (an elective at my engineering school). One of the ways for conducting research was through a survey. I have always believed that I write better when I write about something I enjoy and am interested in....so this led me to writing about Libritarians, or less specifically - people who tend to put little faith in government regulation. I was hoping to get around 50 surveys, the more the better!
To put it simply, I am just looking for quick concise answers to the questions below. I am asking these questions based on the main idea behind sociology - to study what effects peoples social lives, surrounds, and uprings, (and other factors), does to peoples beliefs, lives, and attitudes (and other things).
I have a theory about what to expect for most answers, however I may be wrong, at which point I would have to create a new hypothesis to explain why I didn't anticipate the results.....mainly just have fun with this and keep in mind this is nothing scientific or anything that is going to get printed in any major review, just graded by a professor (I hope she is a Ron Paul fan) and presented to my class....enjoy.

Traits of liberty minded. people.. That's a good one.
So I sadly wasn't exactly
So I sadly wasn't exactly sure what COINTELPRO was. After googling it i now know.......my only question is that isn't the stuff in the survey stuff the FBI would already know if they wanted to know it? I would exclude the firearm question though, how would they know if you had guns if you didn't participate in DNR hunting licensing?
Anyway, I got sidetracked, if you feel cointelpro is going to use it, by all means don't fill it out....
Wow thanks for all the
Wow thanks for all the responses guys (and now gals too!) Since I have been pointing out things of interest as I read through these, I will share this thought. Most people who answered the question about firearms say they don't own any....and yet we all are for the defense of the right to own and use them. I look forward to touching on that fact that its about a higher moral law and not just about personal safety and recreation. Very cool, thanks again.

When is a survey not a survey?
In statistics, "survey" has a very precise meaning. It should be conducted from a representative "sample." If you use results from the DP, then you should make it clear that you surveyed a sampling of volunteers from the DP. This would hardly represent the general public.
When is a survey not a survey? When the MSM conducts a poll with an agenda, or reports one conducted by a biased party, or when you get those push-polls that aren't really surveys.

Thanks, I didn't anticipate the neat story part of this. I realize now I'm not the only one who bounced around a lot before landing on libritarianism. Thanks for taking the time, I realize after looking at the survey how much time it actually takes.
Yeah
It seems most of the people our age in the movement came out of some type of ultra neocon or ultra neoliberal background.
No problem, the survey wasn't all that long but yeah you're going to find that you basically have to strong-arm people into filling them out. Is the survey directed towards people in the liberty movement? What's your hypothesis, if you don't mind my asking?

My hypothesis (and I know
My hypothesis (and I know this isn't the stuff of Sociologist legend) is that there is a large gathering of people from different economic classes, trades, education levels etc...getting behind one message of limited government. So yes this is targeted specifically for Liberty minded people and is limited by those who mostly use the internet.
I do anticipate a mostly male and mostly young response based on the fact this is mostly open debate and online...sorry if any older people are offended.
Basically I have my own idea on what I anticipate a typical answer to be for each question. For starters, since I used to be a member of a 'George Bush is God' family, I never questioned anything until I realized how sick I was getting from trying to defend his policies to people outside my family.
I had a major political switch due to the 08 elections. I anticipated most people having only one major political mindset change at most in their lifetime, especially those under the age of 30. Already I see one person with two, and you with three! I would draw the conclusion that you put some time and thought into your decision and were trying to find solutions to the world around you.
I don't want to go into each question specifically here while people are still filling out surveys, but as I said before this isn't exactly groundbreaking material anyway lol. I mostly wanted write about something other than how race affects your opportunities in life and how being rich makes life easy --like the other students in my class are.

Ah, well it would be just another chance to spread the word to people that might not of heard the words 'liberty' or 'Ron Paul'. Is that compensation enough? I would send you money -- if I had any, and we all know that unless its gold its gonna be worthless anyway!
Isn't that the truth.
The FRN is on it's way to not being worth the paper it's printed on.
As for my information, thanks but I'll pass. Information is a commodity, and I believe that people, generally speaking, have been conditioned to give up their personal information a bit too easily and willingly. I've started asking anyone who asks me for information how much it's worth to them. And while I know you didn't ask me specifically, I enjoy taking advantage of the opportunities to educate others that present themselves.
That said, I'm certain that you'll still find plenty of people willing to give you what you're asking for anyway.
Well thanks anyway, I am
Well thanks anyway, I am willing to bet a majority of people on this site feel the same way about these sorts of things. I figured I should aim high for sample size and expect low numbers considering how much privacy is a big issue to most of us.
