probably are not causing any confusion here with the way your question was worded but it would be more appropriate/accurate to say"semi-automatic Handgun and Revolver"

It all depends
on how much time he had, and how many extra magazines he had with him.
However, my gut feeling is that over 40 casualties(killed or wounded) would require more than one shooter, because people react pretty quickly and get to cover or out of the way. Especially military personnel.
The chances of a lone shooter hitting that many people before they got to cover, is very small.
Also, a pistol is not a high hit-probability weapon beyond 50yds(or even beyond 25yds for most people), and killing shots are not likely to occur at distance in rapid fire with a pistol, unless you are some kind of real expert shot.
I think the odds are that there was at least one other shooter, probably more, unless all the victims were standing together right in front of him, and had a long way to run to get to any cover..
seems pretty fishy to me,
to fire so many rounds without people being able to take cover on a semi automatic. It absolutely conflicts with the original stories of full auto M-16 with 3 shooters. It is pretty hard to mistake full auto M-16 for a semi pistol.

Rifles..Thousands...or until the barrel melts.
Pistols...hundreds...until you run out of reloads.
Beretta M9 (92FS) holds 16-21 rounds. Can be reloaded before it runs empty. Two M9's? 40 rounds before a reload is necessary.
Pretty vague parameters.
Not all pistols and rifles are created equal.
With or without extra magazines? What pistol and rifle combination is in question? Need more input here before you can tally capacity.
Going on the premise that you refer to an M9 pistol and M16 in standard configuration: the M9 with a basic issue hi-cap holds 15 rounds, and a standard M16 magazine holds 30.
