It seems it is a "rude" gesture in the UK, invoking a character most of us have SOME admiration for (yes, I know the tale is not the history.) He HAS become a folk symbol, and we need a literal symbol. I think it is time we return to the heavy use of this gesture, explain it to people.
If someone who knows could clarify, I will add it to this, but I THINK the back of the hand faces out. We REALLY need to start speaking to each other in symbols we have totally surrendered that language to them, and it is powerful. (Well, not TOTALLY - quiltingsando's effort MUCH appreciated!)

it's also....
the sign for victory. V - for victory. Palm towards viewer.

Haha
different cultures, so funny
well...except for one thing
The rude british version is with the knuckles facing the viewer, whereas the "peace sign" is with the palm facing the viewer.
Of course... I'm talking about "PEACE SIGN" not that hip hop sideways thing. I'm not sure what that is.
Good story:
I knew of the story of the archers and have been using that sign for my entire life. Along with the the generation that used it as sign calling for peace. I still use it constantly and people just think I'm an old hippie or something.
There is a story behind many thing that we don't know about. My friends all laugh and tell me I am full of "useless trivia", but not one of them have ever told me to stop.

Well, I did not know that!
* flashing you my two fingers Paul4won!
According to popular legend, the rude V-sign was a gesture of defiance first used by English and Welsh archers during the 100 Years War against France.
The French apparently threatened to cut off the arrow-shooting fingers of the longbow men, so the archers would wave these two fingers to show they could still shoot.

hmmmm....
I did not buy the photo from the RNC of the delegates, but we held a "Peace" sgin over our hearts. Now that I think about it, I think I already flashed this sign once... lol! Did not even know what I was doing - serendipity!

Back atcha!
I think I will be using it. My way of telling my fellow liberty lovers "These two fingers work for peace and my weapon."

2 finger salute
According to a popular legend the two-fingers salute and/or V sign derives from the gestures of longbowmen fighting in the English army at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War.[4][14] The story claims that the French threatened to cut off the arrow-shooting fingers of all the English and Welsh longbowmen after they had won the battle at Agincourt. But the longbowmen came out victorious and showed off their two fingers, still intact. Historian Juliet Barker quotes Jean Le Fevre (who fought on the English side at Agincourt) as saying that Henry V included a reference to the French cutting off longbowmen's fingers in his pre-battle speech.

Ahhhh - "I am still ready to fight" then?
I love it!
And yet, the overtone of "PEACE" still there.
Really nice, like the "r3volution," kinda.

Right, in the UK, the
Right, in the UK, the gesture for "up yours" involves the index and middle finger with back of hand facing out, like the peace hand gesture, but with your palm facing you. The gansta rappers are actually telling everyone "up yours" when they flash their "peace out" gesture! :o)
Well, I'm down wid' it
If you could see the little white granny that just e-rapped that, you would be laughing. .
Some humor is so lost on the net...
Thanks so much for the info - I am loving this.
