Japan has found an ingenious way to “create” money: fureai kippu
Through corporatism, big government worked hard to illegalize any currency other than its own. However, when the going gets tough, the tough create their own currency.

But on to Japan's example. As you may know, Japan hit their recession before we did...and they came up with a brilliant idea.
Here is an article about it: http://www.healthbeatblog.com/2008/07/finding-the-mon.html
Here's a snipet from that article that explains it.
“there are about 300 or 400 private currency systems in Japan to pay for any care for the elderly that isn't covered by the national health insurance,” he explains. “They are called ‘fureai kippu’ (caring relationship tickets).
“Here's how they work: let's say that on my street lives an elderly gentleman who is handicapped and cannot go shopping for himself. I do the shopping for him. I help him with food preparation. I help him with the ritual bath, which is very important in Japan.
“For this help, I get credits. I put those credits in a savings account, and when I'm sick, I can have other people provide such services for me. Or I can electronically send my credits to my mother, who lives on the other side of the country, and somebody takes care of her.”
Brilliant!

Very interesting. As long
Very interesting. As long as the government keeps their hands out of it and does not try to tax it to smithereens, then I'm all for it!
In addition to working for these credits people ought to be able to buy & sell them as well.
...
All that is needed is for
All that is needed is for some entity to make itself the official tracker of time...and, of course, for the government to stay out of it.
Sounds Like a Good Plan.
If they keep track of credits on computers, I wonder if I, an American in the USA, can buy or accumulate credits on my computer?
Would love to have saved enough credits to pay for a vacation in Japan.

What an excellent idea
This is much better than just throwing the elderly into a retirement home to be forgotten, abused and looted. The idea would really bring people together and improve everyones health. Where do we sign up!
HELLO
In America we call it personal responsibility and freedom to do what we want. That is why charities exist and we donate to charities. If your favorite charity does not help your neighbor - start your own charity.

I followed the links in this article and
found more interesting articles. This interview of Lietaer talks more about fureai kippu," a survey of elders showed near-universal preference for fureai kippus over yen-based care system."
And in Bali, a community-based time currency that has existed beside the official rupiah for hundreds of years and which he credits as nurturing an unusually strong community spirit, providing something everyone can participate in, whether the community is rich or poor.
He also says new systems of "social purpose complementary currencies" are electronic. "Today anyone with...a PC can start a currency system." I don't know if he's correct, but he claims "time dollar systems have been declared tax-free by the IRS.
