The problem with authoritarian parenting is that instead of getting the child's willing consent, parents use force.

Using force teaches children how to be sneaky, flee, fight back, and rebel. If that mother needs law enforcement now, wait until this kid becomes a teenager. He will either decide that force is the way to get what you want and become a criminal or a police officer, or he will decide that it is better to be sneaky and underhanded to get what you want so as to avoid the authorities.

As my Dad pointed out regarding my sister (or maybe our dog, I don't remember), if you grab it from her, she'll just learn to snatch it quicker and eat it or hide it. On the other hand, if you convince her to return it willingly, item recovered. It takes more parenting skill, but it's worth it.
