NEW YORK (AP) — Federal prosecutors Thursday took steps to seize four U.S. mosques and a Fifth Avenue skyscraper owned by a nonprofit Muslim organization long suspected of being secretly controlled by the Iranian government.
In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets of the Alavi Foundation and an alleged front company.
The assets include Islamic centers in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston, more than 100 acres in Virginia, and a 36-story office tower in New York.
Seizing the properties would be a sharp blow against Iran, which has been accused by the U.S. government of bankrolling terrorism and seeking a nuclear bomb.
A telephone call and e-mail to Iran's U.N. Mission seeking comment were not immediately answered.
It is extremely rare for U.S. law enforcement authorities to seize a house of worship, a step fraught with questions about the First Amendment right to freedom of religion.
The action against the Shiite Muslim mosques is sure to inflame relations between the U.S. government and American Muslims, many of whom are fearful of a backlash after last week's Fort Hood shooting rampage, blamed on a Muslim American soldier.

NEW YORK – The organization that federal investigators say is a front for the Iranian government has spent millions of dollars over the years on philanthropy: buying property for four U.S. mosques, funding religious schools and language classes, and translating books on Islam.
The move to seize assets held by the New York-based Alavi Foundation will cripple the charity's work and put the government in the awkward position of potentially shutting down the houses of worship, which occupy buildings and land that Alavi owns.
There are no claims of wrongdoing at the mosques. And they will stay open as prosecutors try to take hold of the hundreds of millions of dollars in Alavi money and property. The mosques were not mentioned by name, only listed by street address.
Still, the mosques and schools could be collateral damage in the case. On Friday, the government moved to cut off Alavi's direct access to its money, according to court records.
Sabukta Chowdhury, a parent at the Razi School, a K-12 school that is part of the Imam Ali Mosque in Queens, said her child would be upset if the school closed.
"The school is very good," Chowdhury said outside the building Friday. "My child very sad. They do not want to go to another school."

Obviously, the gov't could easily be on the same page, but with a pro Muslim in office, in Obama, we have a classic illustration of good cop, bad cop.
Obama is an ardent defender and lover of Islam. He once described in an interview, Islam as "my faith", then later said he made a mistake and said he was Christian. Sure! I make that mistake all the time, and accidentally say my faith is a foreign faith. Do I hear a chant from Joe Wilson here?
At any rate, Obama can position himself as the good guy, saying he doesn't want war, etc. .... more lies, more of the same, but then he reluctantly sends more troops because it's the will of the American people (who will have been so brainwashed and propagandized by the mainstream media that they will want war against Iran).
He'll sort of be like Pilate...."I find no guilt in him, but if you want to crucify him, then go ahead., but I'm washing my hands from this evil act."
That could be the line he feeds the American people.

Obama is not a defender or lover of Islam- period.
If he was- then WHY IS HE INVOLVED IN THE MURDERS OF MUSLIMS IN AFGHANISTAN, IRAQ, AND PAKISTAN? Obama goes all over the world- he met with indian leaders and was saying "namaste" all day- he doesn't care what he has to do. Anytime he says he respects Islam(just like when George Bush did the same thing), he says it so he can try to get muslim support on his invasions of muslim countries. Obama is no muslim- and I don't understand what advantage people think they have by labeling him as one.

In fact, it's darn right scary. The gov't obviously KNOWS FULL WELL how the Iranians will feel. Not to mention, what about the 1st Amendment, and the rights of all churches? Next it will be the Branch Davidians or any other religious sect, mainstream or not, they want to demonize.
This is just more political opportunism, taking advantage of the Ft Hood tragedy.
It will lead to more blowback, and yes, to a war with Iran. Though Iran is no Imperial Japan of the 1940s, the analogy is good.
The Americans were unalterably opposed to war. They just needed a good reason to fight.
Now our gov't is creating a situation in which Iran will likely by righteously indignant, which will escalate into more war and One Big Ass Mistake America will be loving life as he can follow his orders from The Powers That Be, and perhaps enjoy a little boost in ratings from the American people who can be so easily manipulated by the MSM.
