The Million Med March is a grassroots movement of physicians that have set out to re-establish honor, dignity, and worth to the medical profession. Its sole mission is to protect the relationship between the doctor and the patient.
The organizer of this event is Edward Chastika, MD. You can contact him at astr03@aol.com.
Background information:
The current healthcare system in America is on the brink of bankruptcy due to the rising administrative costs of its delivery. This financial burden is unsustainable and is leading to a national reduction in access to affordable care. The proposed legislation in the both the House and Senate are not the solution to this catastrophe. In fact they are guaranteed to be the catalyst for the final destruction of what has been the pillar of medical care in the world.
It is the thousands of physicians who make up the MillionMedMarch and Docs4PatientCare that are sounding the alarm in recognition that the current legislation will significantly raise the costs of healthcare delivery in America. This is a very dangerous proposition for our patients as the politicians in Washington DC are preparing to spend over $1 trillion dollars of our taxes. As these costs rise, access to care will diminish. Eventually thousands of physicians, clinics, and hospitals will be forced out of business leaving millions of patients insured, but without a doctor.
The fundamental objective of healthcare reform must be to lower costs without decreasing its value. If you have a procedure done in a hospital and a scalpel is used, you will be charged in excess of $250 for the scalpel alone. If this legislation is allowed to pass, the taxpayer will continue to buy more $250 scalpels. We MUST lower the cost of the scalpel and all of the other inflated costs that are burdening the system.
The following 5 principles are the unwavering points that the physicians of the MillionMedMarch (MMM) must see represented in any legislation that goes before Congress. These 5 principles are the foundation of healthcare in America and by adopting these principles we can ensure that every patient will have access to affordable healthcare:
•Ultimately, medical decisions need to be made by doctors and their patients. Empower the patient to take control of their own healthcare through free market solutions. By allowing the patient to engage directly with their primary care physician, a large portion of routine and preventative care can be accomplished without the interference of a middleman.
•No legislation should become law without serious tort reform. We spend $400 billion a year for coverage, representation and settlements as a profession. No serious legislation that aims at lowering healthcare costs can be considered if this principle is overlooked.
•Insurance can be made more affordable by eliminating state monopolies and allowing the portability of health insurance across state lines. By uncoupling health insurance from employers patients will have the ability to control their own coverage. These methods create competition, which is the only true way to drive down healthcare costs.
•Transform the reimbursement and billing systems that are strangling our practices. 35% of healthcare costs are spent for administrative purposes only and are erroneously raising the cost that are eventually being passed on to our patients. We need a simplified transparent reimbursement system.
•End the National Practitioner Data Bank and other entities that are unfairly censuring doctors without due-process. These practices are a financial burden to the healthcare system and result in billions of dollars spent on litigation.

uhh
Maybe if we god rid of the 300k+ dollar a year jobs like Michelle Obama had at that hospital we wouldn't have to worry about such exorbitant costs. You know, the one where she did absolutely nothing and got paid over a quarter million dollars a year for it?
Chicago politics at it's best.

Or...maybe we could do something to stop the lawyers from charging 5,6,7,8 hundred dollars an hour on the malpractice suites....
Or how about this:
Support Ron Paul's healthcare bill.

Both the millionmed group and Ron's
bill seem good to me, and I hope both will get transpartisan support.
:)
Will you help spread the word?

Yes amerianna, we definitely need positive
responses to those who think the absence of government medical care is no medical care for the poor. Every time someone supports a government program it's just that they lack a belief in the creative potential of free humans.
Yes!
Sorry, i was being facetious :D
Why?
Do you have a problem with the bill?

I can't seem to get ANYONE to answer WHY!
WHY are we not supporting Ron Paul's healthcare bill?

We are. Or at least I am :),
We are. Or at least I am :), but I'm pretty sure others are, as well. The problem is, it's hard to do much in support of something that is so completely off the radar screen of most people. For better or worse, everyone is currently fixated on public options, mandated coverage, and other such details of "Pelosi's" bill, and on what Lieberman will do, despite nothing either of those two clowns could ever hope to achieve, would compare in the slightest with Ron's bill.
Other than people I know who are self defined Ron Paul supporters, noone even knows he has a health care bill. They do know he exists, which is a step up from a few years ago. And many even know of 1207. But when it comes to healthcare, the mainstreamers still have a virtual monopoly on the debate. I suspect the best we can hope for right now, is the Democratic bills collapsing, resulting in media complaining the GOP is only the party of no, perhaps causing some to mention one of the less mainstream members of that no party actually has a constructive bill on the table.
Thanks, stuki :)
I think that those of us who HAVE heard of the bill should bring it up once in a while. We should, at the very least, be well aware of it on THIS site - but more often than not I keep hearing someone say that they have never heard of it. Most here having never heard of a Ron Paul bill - on a Ron Paul site? That's way NOT COOL :( Especially when other health care bills are discussed (actually criticized) here so very, very often - and yet Ron Paul's bill is virtually unheard of. It's preposterous! Please help me spread the word, will you?

"It's a communication breakdown"
My original comment was facetious, not my response to yours. I don't know anything about Dr. Paul's Bill to be honest. I'm not sure I have even heard of it before.
Thank you for mentioning it, I'll have to take a look at it.
Thanks :)
It was first introduced in March. It has been brought up several times in the past few weeks and I haven't seen any comments AGAINST it - but not many here seem to be FOR it, either. Whenever it is brought up, it is abruptly dropped. Quite a mystery, if you ask me. Basicly it would allow all medical expences (including alternative medicines and herbs) to be used as medical deductions on personal income taxes. Very simple and extremely fair to everyone, as nobody is forced to pay for anybody else's medical care. Maybe that's the problem. Illegal imigrants might still be a burden to hospitals and big pharma would not have the leverage they seek. Maybe Dr. Paul changed his mind about supporting his own bill due to fear of retrobution from big pharma. I don't know and I can't get anyone to talk about it. :(

amerianna,
Have you started a topic for that discussion? If so could you link it? If not you should; put your questions out there and lets see whats going on with it. I will skim over it at some point tonight and let you know my not so scholarly opinion on it, for what it's worth. : D (if you create the venue, or point me in that direction ;)
Ok - watch for it in a little while!
