AGH! The agony of defeat - I can't do facebook
Submitted by paul4won on Mon, 11/16/2009 - 06:40
I try, I tried myspace too. On myspace, a lot of former coworkers "friended" me and then never spoke to me... They speak to the air, or the wires, or something, but it is weird and I did not like it.
I tried facebook, thought I could use it for political connections. Again, people do not talk to each other, they get on there and say "Look at me, look what I am doing." OK, I am REALLY proud of some of these folks, even envious of a few of them - wish I had the talent, the time, the money...
But they are not talking to me like they are my FRIENDS and words mean something to me and I wind up with hurt feelings.
How do you all do it? Am I just too old, can't learn this trick?

I hate to break it to you but, all they need is your IP address and they know who you are. Since they have access to servers thanks to the "Patriot Act" it is very likely you are already screwed due to your involvment on the Daily Paul.
Furthermore...What are you scared of???? I am for Liberty and Freedom and am damn proud of it!....I say if loving the constitution and expressing myself is a crime them.......

Facebook has been good to me.
I have connected with a lot of C4L people and exchange ideas. I have Lew Rockwell, Adam Kokesh, Tom Woods and Michael on my list as well as groups for Peter Schiff, Gerald Celente and more.
I have connected with delegates, and other people in other states for the cause of liberty. I have a direct line to my sister in Kuwait and all my family in Miami, Washington State, North Carolina and Indiana.
I have converted many friends through educational posts and have learned a bit from them too.
Yeah, there are plenty of jackasses that want you to play Mafia Wars and Farmville...
There are also folks that do nothing but talk about themselves...but all in all it has been a pretty good medium for me
I take a lot of what I get on the Daily Paul and post it to my wall where I can expose some of the sleeping people to our Alarm Clock!
I think email is a thing of the past...Facebook is more functional.

Trouble is
if you don't live close to the people you are re-connecting with, it's hard and time-consuming to keep up or revive a friendship strictly through computers. I talk to a few friends on the computer and hang out here sometimes and that's it. Life's too glorious to waste it all typing.
thanks,
it never occurred to me that it's because i'm too old.

heh
i recently found out that some of the people who i consider close friends have all been simultaneously talking shit behind my back for a few months - AT LEAST a few months.
i've confronted them.
one of them denies it. but i know FOR SURE he's lying. i've known them for 15+ years.
what to do?
The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.
- Calvin Coolidge
Forgive them, hope they become nicer, move on
It's hard but when things like that happen I have to remind myself that I am exactly the same person regardless of what anyone- friends or otherwise- thinks of me. I have my faults whether my friends like me or not. I have my virtues, too....and no one can take them away by gossiping about me.
Friendship requires flexibility and forgiveness...invest time and energy in the people who know you well and like you anyway. Forgive and maybe forget the ones who don't.
Ahh, faceCIAbook
Oops, did I just say that :-)
I've gone back to Facebook in the last few months (originally started using it in my business). I try to use it as a tool for good. I've been conducting an experiment where I very subtly try to introduce freedom/liberty type concepts into everyday conversation.
One area of success has been the 'piggy flu' - I think most of my "friends" are starting to realise that the whole thing is a giant scam and that the H1N1 vaccine is a definite no-no.
If I am too overt in my views though, such as saying anything against the great Messiah/Pharaoh Obama, then I will get jumped upon. So subtle is the word. To tell the truth though, I agree with paul4won's post - the whole thing feels very 'disconnected'.
Sometimes I think we should all open up several fake Facebook accounts each and talk B.S. to each other all day long. Maybe that'll overheat and blow the NSA's computers? But then, their supercomputers are currently dealing in multi-petaflops (thousands of trillions of calculations per second).
Well, when it's always asking what's on your mind you feel
a certain obligation to answer it ;-)
Yeah, I probably shouldn't be using my real name on there...but that's the name most people know me by -- except for you guys.

Some People Say...
... (i.e. me) that the whole point of websites like Myspace and Facebook is a means for various "intelligence" agencies to collate enough data that they can continually improve the algorithms in their computer programs, to the point where they could actually predict what we are going to do and say, before we even do or say it.
Therefore, when Facebook asks what's on your mind, just lie or give wishy-washy answers. That should set their agenda back by a few seconds or so. For example, your next Facebook comment could be "I'm really starting to warm to this Obama dude" :-P
Well THAT would certainly cause a flurry of confusion! LOL
I think I'd be instantly disconnected from all the friends that matter while no one else would probably give a damn. Would certainly be an interesting experiment though to find out exactly where everyone stands. haha

I can't do it either the whole thing is just too creepy
-The government spying, databasing and profiling
-The voyeurism
-Your whole life on display
-Weird people you don't even know knowing where you are and everything you do or say
-The possibility of stupid and/or blackmailing friends/enemies posting incriminating/embarrassing photos of you
-Employers using it to screen applicants and censure or fire current employees ( I have HR friends that say they do exactly that)
-The incessant viral quizzes, pokes and games that "innocently" want to tap into all your information and friends list
-The farming your information out to third parties for who knows what
-The archiving of your information even if you delete it or delete your account
-The enigmatic user agreement that appears to say they own anything and everything you post or others post about you.
The whole thing just feels slimy and deceptive but they know people will sign on because humans are such social creatures and just have to reconnect with friends. Even I couldn't resist...for shame. Though, from the get go I have kept it a bare bones page, name and alternative email address only. If people want to contact me they can reach me there. I refuse to post anything more on that site, and even that is probably way too much.
It sucks too because in a perfect world that would be a fun tool to interact with friends and share interests and life with people. You can see the slumbering masses having a great time with it, unconcerned about the dirty hands their info passes through or the prying eyes that see. I guess it's true, ignorance is bliss.

thank you!
I don't like to put my life on front street like most people on
these sites. I like to use the internet to increase my understanding of my world.
I can't do sports or much tv either. Guess I'm weird?

It's a new kind of communication
In a matter of months, refriending people you haven't talked to since elementary school - there's just no way to really catch up like you'd do if you saw them on the street.
You end up refriending and then not talking to them at all, which seems weird somehow, but that's how it goes on facebook. It's just a new way. I don't think it's bad because that's just how it has to be. It's communication overload if you try to make strong connections with everyone.
Defend Liberty!
Some good points
imo.
I had considered joining
I had considered joining facebook, but a friend warned me off from doing it. He said he had joined facebook and used it to re-connect with old highschool classmates he hadn't seen or heard from for many years and had found some on facebook who he was really glad he found and re-connected with because he could not find them on classmates, myspace or any other site.
However, he said that apparently, he had sent what facebook calls an "unsolicited message" to a woman from his old highschool that he remembered well, but she did not remember him at all and she complained about it to facebook saying she was sent an unwanted message by a stranger and his facebook account became disabled, permanently it appears. He contacted facebook to plead his case that he didn't do or say anything wrong, he had just sent a nice friendly message talking about how he had remembered her so well even after so many years, but to no avail. Seems he was banned by facebook for good with no second chance. He was angry and upset and also depressed because he had no way to get back in contact with his old highschool friends that he'd re-connected with on facebook, he hadn't thought to get alternate contact info from them, so now he has no way to get back in touch with the ones who were only on facebook and nowhere else. Needless to say, he hates facebook now because he cannot believe people can be banned so easily for such small things. I guess if someone sends you a message on facebook who you've never heard from before previously, and you don't like them for whatever reason, or you want to just be a jerk, you can complain and get that person banned easily from facebook for good.
After he told me that, I figured, best not to even try to get on facebook, because I'd probably want to look up old highschool and college classmates too, and the same thing might happen to me, that happened to him. I figure best to save myself the aggravation.

Everything you put on the internet, including these words are cataloged by the NSA. Just makes it a little harder for them to do if you use a nick instead of your real identity. Everything you say on the phone is recorded and put into your digital profile.....everything !
On FaceBook or other social networking sites you're publishing personal details of your life for big brother.

I got invited to join facebook but never did because I find it very creepy and not a very good way to meet or keep "friends."
Go old school with family and friends. Don't forget to buy stamps. People love letters! Stick to email and photo sharing sites. That's all facebook really is.
My wife got into a fight with her family using facebook. She sent something to her brother and her brother's wife intercepted it. Yadda Yadda. Not going to that Thanksgiving dinner.
That's why if you don't want people to know something
you don't post it. I am very cautious on that end.
