Help! They are getting hungry and angry!

LANSING, Mich. — One frustrated client hurled a piece of concrete through the window of a welfare agency. Another threw her car keys at a welfare worker before being escorted away. At one point, a woman on public assistance even took a swing at a worker.

As Michigan struggles with the highest-in-the-nation jobless rate, state workers who deal with unemployment, welfare and other aid programs say they have never been so overwhelmed — or so worried about their safety. Some clients have begun taking their anger out on the very people who are offering help. And caseworkers are seeking extra protection.

"We are seeing it more and more as a dangerous situation," said Amy Harrison, a caseworker who used to work for the state prison system, where she says she never felt as insecure as she does now.

More than 15 percent of Michigan workers do not have a job. The dismal economy has also caused record demand for food stamps and public health care, forcing impoverished clients to wait hours for help in crowded office buildings. To make matters worse, a troublesome new computer system is also causing delays.

It's a recipe for conflict — or worse.

"What is it going to take? Is it going to take one of us getting seriously injured or killed? I hope not," said Laurie Massie, who works for the Department of Human Services. "I am replaceable as a state of Michigan employee. But I'm not replaceable to my friends and family."

But but they're supposed to take care of us!

Whatever happened to service with a smile?

I would like to see the Daily Paul

Sponsor a holiday dinner in the Detroit area or elsewhere. We would collect funds on line and volunteers and liberty candidates could serve dinner and liberty .

A strictly libertarian view of a libertarian government's hypothetical role in this crisis (in other words, this view will be the way things should be, not the way the are...the death of libertarianism is already a foregone conclusion):

These unemployed workers are obsolete...they are the biological byproducts of an industry that no longer exists. Let them suffer, let them die, let them rise to the occassion on the merits of their own will to survive. The government's role? Absolutely nothing. Let charity, if there be any, come from private concerns...church groups, philanthropists, etc.

The gov't has had a role...

...in putting people out of work. Who could honestly say the gov't hasn't played a significant part in that?

As for those "biological byproducts" that you are all too eager to see suffer and die, they are PEOPLE, huckleberry. Human beings.

A libertarian view of this

A libertarian view of this "crisis" is the recognition that these people are unemployed not because they are somehow biologically obsolete, but simply because they are the inevitable byproduct of government ring fencing politically better connected union workers and economically illiterate upper class clowns indoctrinated into believing there is something romantic about supporting labor unions to the detriment of non unionized labor.

As Rothbard and others have pointed out since pretty much forever, in a free society, there is no involuntary unemployment. The only way to engineer an underclass of the unemployed, is to introduce restrictions of people's freedom of association and contract. Which Michigan has done to a greater degree than most other states, with entirely predictable results.

Good comment stuki, valid points but

damn I Hate collectivist labels-even libertarian. I think they encourage individuals to not think as individuals-to not arrive at their own conclusions individually. This plays on the common human trait of seeking the easy way always. That trait is not always without benefits but it does make people more susceptible to TDW manipulation. Brand'em, Tell'em what WE(they) think and Lead'em.

I mean to rout you out!

-Just because you are among us, does not make you with us

-The door is wide open, anything can slither in

and now we need to educate the people to that reality as quickly as possible so they don't let the government run over them again.

I can't help but think.

What a great opportunity to go down that line and give those people some Ron Paul material to read as they wait their turn. Maybe, they would actually learn something and realize Ron Paul is a great STATESMAN.
