Kentucky Senate race shows rise of anonymous online attacks
Audio recordings purporting to be of a political candidate criticizing his boss — the governor. Video productions making fun of another candidate’s misstep during a speech. .A fake Web site that actually criticizes the candidate it’s supposed to support.
It used to be that the most scurrilous attacks on candidates were done through whisper campaigns or photocopied fliers left in mailboxes or on cars.
But the Internet has given rise to a new category of “dirty tricks” that can reach thousands of people within hours.
And six months away from the primaries in Kentucky’s 2010 U.S. Senate campaign, all four major candidates have been targeted by an anonymous online attack...On the Republican side, a couple of Web sites set up to look like Secretary of State Trey Grayson’s campaign site actually criticize him.
