U.S. residents fight for the right to use outdoor clothes lines
PERKASIE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) – Carin Froehlich pegs her laundry to three clotheslines strung between trees outside her 18th-century farmhouse, knowing that her actions annoy local officials who have asked her to stop.
Froehlich is among the growing number of people across America fighting for the right to dry their laundry outside against a rising tide of housing associations who oppose the practice despite its energy-saving green appeal.
Although there are no formal laws in this southeast Pennsylvania town against drying laundry outside, a town official called Froehlich to ask her to stop drying clothes in the sun. And she received two anonymous notes from neighbors saying they did not want to see her underwear flapping about.
"They said it made the place look like trailer trash," she said, in her yard across the street from a row of neat, suburban houses. "They said they didn't want to look at my 'unmentionables.'"
Froehlich says she hangs her underwear inside. The effervescent 54-year-old is one of a growing number of Americans demanding the right to dry laundry on clotheslines despite local rules and a culture that frowns on it.

Good fences...
make "good neighbors". This is no longer America.
How sad
an American icon seeing clothes waving in the wind. it's about what we are, hard working salt of the earth people. I guess greenie weanines are idiots.
Well they won't even let trailer trash hang out their laundry
anymore where I live...LOL
But that doesn't stop me. :o)
This is what is called, 'politically correct' which leads to mob
rules. I hope she doesn't cave on this one. They have no business attempting to interfere with the enjoyment of her own property. They should put up a fence if they don't like it.
They should put up a fence if they don't like it.
Or just look away, or shut their eyes, or just stop being a so damn tyrannical.
they just like to tell other people how to live

Well, she obviously
was there before the newer homes were built.
Tell them to take a pill and not look out the window.
What arrogance!
They should write a letter
They should write a letter to the editor of the local paper asking why the neighbors are against such an environmentally friendly, clean and green way of drying clothes. Surely the neighbors will have a difficult time arguing against such an environmentally responsible practice, considering how pop culture the green movement is at the moment.
...
I wish I could hang my laundry out to dry again
Nowhere to do it where I live now. Everything comes out so much fresher and no wrinkles. There's something poetic and nostalgic about it too. Makes me feel good.
trailer trash??
Sounds like someone just wants to air their own dirty laundry.

Why would someone air dirty laundry on a perfectly clean clothes
line? Hey, I'm just askin!

Reminds me of what Grandma used to say...
Once soap is outlawed, only outlaws will have soap.
In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

lol.... I think most
lol.... I think most Americans liked Roosevelt. they trusted him.. but when history tells the story of the man and the truth comes out, he was rotten to the core.

it always amazes me on how much divergence there is . . .
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
among those who believe themselves to be Libertarians--
This isn't the only reason I wouldn't ever live in a housing association neighborhood (the greatest is that I could never afford a home in such)--
but it sounds to me as though THIS woman doesn't--
Unsustainable snobs--
you don't have to be a 'green' automoton to care about things like line drying--
and if you want to do things sustainably or SIMPLY, you can STILL be a libertarian--

This is totally ridiculous.
This goes against everything that Ron Paul has said, and against everything that I have known my whole life.
To hell with neighbors that want to tell you what to do, and how to live your life ! If they don't like, they can move.
They shouldn't be able to infringe upon your unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
And I am totally ashamed of Octobox's comment below.
I don't care at all what my neighbors do.
They could turn their property into a junkyard as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't bother me in the least.
What is this world coming to?

SirFelix: "ashamed" -- really? Got Drama?
#1
In a free-society there are "housing associations" -- and if I want to live in one where people DO NOT air laundry out front I can *snorts*
#2
I said I would NEVER VOTE to ban someone's right to turn their neighborhood into a "low rent" enviroment.
What's to be ashamed of?

SirFelix: Do you read posts before FLAME, hahaha
I said I would live in a Housing Association (actually I do) and I would again in a free-society.
I never said I'd campaign against your right to air your dirty laundry in the front yard -- less I could "prove" it lowers my property value.
Aren't you a Anarcho-Capitalist -- I'm a Consumer-Individualist and philosophically I don't believe in "property rights" -- however, that's not the world I live in.
Don't think for a minute that you live "free" -- you add too corporatism. I can only live at 85% Counter-Economics; I can't find Organic Free-Range Gas nor do I live Off-the-Grid, I am working on it though, but the Gas thing is going to take time. Occasionally I fly -- take the bus.
No one is "free" from some level of abdication. There are no Anarchists in a Corporatist Society. RP takes his paychecks and uses up (at least part) of the 1,000,000 budget he is afforded. RP is a "welfarist" as far as his personal earnings are concerned. In fact anyone working for gov't or contracting with gov't or buying products in the U.S is a welfarist -- right?
You have a backyard -- hang the laundry up back there.
You probably did not grow up poor like I did -- and it was no badge of honor either.
Oil Changes in the front lawn -- Washing Machines by the front door -- Kids with dirty diapers running all over un-washed / un-kept. Laundry strew on bushes and fences.
I'm not crying or fighting "this cause"
Laundry Rights vs Fair View Rights -- They are both "right seeking lobbyist self-abdicating voters"
