Then and Now: Continental Congress

America has often been the focus of the world since the radical concept of a virtuous society possessing the means of which to govern each his own affairs was conceived in Carpenters Hall Philadelphia Pennsylvania, July 4th 1776 at a Continental Congress. In support of the concept, a convention was later held in 1787 to which the principle might be applied more generally. It was the author of our early Declaration who also quoted later to a French observer “Happy for us that when we find our Constitutions defective and unsufficient to secure the happiness of our people, we can assemble with all the coolness of philosophers, and set it to rights while every other nation on earth must have recourse to arms.” If I were to draw from this it would be that the concept of liberty is one of constant attacks, and that when faced with such onslaughts, revisions, or changes in strategy are duly justified so as the honorable fortress of popular sovereignty remains intact.
The year now is 2009, and the attacks have risen to the level where once again, the bravest fortress defenders have gathered at a Continental Congress to update the strategy for America under the watchful eye of the world. Where other countries would rush to arms due to lack of virtue, or be deprived of arms lacking empowerment, the concept of liberty like the native rattlesnake remains uniquely qualified for America.
