HELP - Need Advice: Living off the grid
Hi Everyone. I've been fairly successful at seeking advice from members of the DP in the past (thank you all) and I'm asking, once more, for your "sage" advice.
I'm a father of an 8 year old girl, a raw food vegan, a big fan of Von Mises and Ron Paul, and I'm considering going off the grid. I'm very concerned, to phrase it lightly, about our growing dependency on government. After seeing Freedom to Fascism for the "umpteenth" time, I'm ready to make the move.
My question is: What resources, books, DVD exist to help me find a way to make the move? How do I support myself and my little girl while removing my family from the government dependence? To this point I've looked closely at Vilcabamba, Ecuador and several intentional communities in the US and elsewhere. I'm leaning toward Vilcabamba.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Build/Buy an Earthship!

I have seen ones for sale for as low as $100K (small 1 bedroom house). You could probably build one yourself for less (cash, pay as you build, no mortgage).

Just went to the Earthship Biotecture website myself. They are working on a very exciting project, which should be of interest to this community. They are creating a county by county map of the United States where housing permitting for environmentally friendly housing (off-grid, non-conventional) is quick and easy, or non-existant. THIS will something to see!!!

Depending on what you mean by "off the grid", I'd suggest looking into small scale solar energy. If you are conservative with your energy usage you can make it work quite well. The company i used to work for makes small solar generators, check them out: http://www.mobilesolarpower.net/

I should have been clearer. I'm looking at completely removing myself from my current state by getting off of the power grid, off of the banking grid, off of the "conventional" food supply grid, etc. Mostly, out from underneath the police state mentality.
I guess you could say that I am hoping to find, for myself and my daughter, a Thoreau-like experience. An experience such that, should the whole "thing" implode, would provide me the opportunity to provide for my little one. Right now I am dependent on a mainstream job in the tech sector, mainstream banking technology, mainstream shopping markets, etc. I yearn to be more self-reliant.

I don't know your situation. Here is mine: I am stuck with 2 mortgages. I picked the wrong time to buy a house in the mountains, and can't unload my old double wide in the valley. It is older, and falling apart. i do NOT want to sink tons of money into a trailer, but have this dream of making it a living example of "This is how one person can be self sufficient." We have given up on renting, every little thing that breaks needs fixed "right now" and we don't have the money, or the time to hop when demanded.
Anyway, if you are a handy kind of guy, and think you can help us get this set up as a model self sufficiency dwelling, we would love to help you if you would love to help us. Yeah, we need something out of it, too. We need this property to eventually be sold, it is where all that remains of our retirement lies. We hope that as a model of self sufficiency, it will lead to a liberty lovers business of setting up such homes, but the money to fund that business would have to come from the sale of this property.
Interested? I am as serious as a heart attack, there would be free rent for the right person.

I think you need a mountainous
region for the best survival from a police state round up. If I was looking to survive I would look for a place in the mountains, with a cave stacked with freeze dried food, and supplies for barter. That would all be hidden. Then I would also have a cabin on the property that would be my main lodging. I would then plant berry bushes and nut trees. A pond with fish and a stream running through the property for water. Oh, boy I'm ready to go. lol
