I respect Ron Paul.
First, I want to say that I was as angry as everyone who is spewing against Rand right now. In fact, I posted my own hateful comment before retracting it long enough to think through the situation.
I was physically at two of the debates that Ron Paul did. In the second, I was seated in the Ron Paul Campaign section, and in the first I was a part of large group of RP supporters that had "infiltrated" the debate to try and influence opinion toward RP.
At both of these debates, and pretty much during all of the televised ones, I remember a few unique moments.
I remember listening to the question. I knew what the audience wanted to hear. But instead of saying what the audience wanted, RP spoke the truth to me and the handful in the room that understood he was right. He did this, even when it meant booing (at the Value Voters one). For this I greatly respected Ron Paul, still do, and always will support him.
But, secretly, I wished just once that he would say what the entire room wanted to hear and look over at us supporters and give us a wink to let us know he was playing them for our benefit. We get played by politicians all of the time, they lie to us and then do what they want to do anyway.
Well, I wanted that reversed. Why shouldn't we give them the neocon line and then turn around and do what WE want instead!?!
I respect Ron Paul, but I think, I hope, Rand just gave us that wink. And I am willing to give him a term to find out. His words would be taken by neocons to mean what they seem to mean. But as someone pointed out, those words are more nuanced than they appear to be at first.
Even if the worst case was true, and that wasn't the wink, then would anyone else have done any better for us anyway? So it's worth it to find out.

the problem is that this
the problem is that this wasn't even the SMART move, because he is on the record as being against Gitmo.

You are right...
Honestly, I don't see a way that this can turn out well, no matter what. My decision to continue support is a half hearted one because I really just don't know what to think about it... Which, as you know, is very rare for me... lmao...

Hey, I'm in the same boat! I donated more to him than Schiff because he was the most winnable candidate, but now I think I will be donating to Schiff and RJ.

Ron Paul interviewed by Aaron Russo in 2005
Here's my rant.
I like many others try to understand the origins of things. Sometimes understanding where/how something started can help one to understand why something is as it is today.
Let's work backwards from this Sunday:
On the 22 November 2009 will occur an 'end the fed' rally indirectly supported by Ron Paul.
Ron Paul has motivated the people of America to question what the fed does and whether it is of any benefit to Americans.
Early in 2005 Ron Paul was interviewed by Aaron Russo (a jewish documentary maker - for the film "America; Freedom to Fascism") asking him about the law validating wage income tax and about the Federal Reserve. Dr. Ron Paul responds in a manner giving the impression this is the first time he has heard these questions.
Back in 1994 Aaron Russo had a sort of stand-up improv show called "Mad as Hell" focussing on essentially all the problems now encompassed within the international truth movement. Russo does stand-up rants about government corruption, loss of freedom and rights, NWO control etc.
A fantastic interview of Russo exists from just months before his death related to bladder cancer in 2007.
The interview is conducted by Alex Jones (who is said to be married to a jewess) where genuine respect and chemistry between Russo and Jones is very evident.
Following Russo's death Jones goes on to make his best (by far) and most mature video called "Fall of the Republic".
My rant is just to say this:
Russo>Paul/Jones>end the fed>end the NWO.
Aaron Russo was 15 years ahead of his time. On his headstone he asked for two words:
"Freedom Fighter".
Aaron Russo was one of the early pioneers in the fight for truth in which most, if not all the readers at the Daily Paul are now a part of in some form or other.
I take my hat off to you Aaron Russo - gone but not forgotten.
Mouser
I can tell you this.
The next "money bomb" will be very interesting for Rand Paul.
If we lose our principles we lose everything.
Ron Paul would have gained some supporters through deceit, as you described, but he would have lost many of us who love him precisely because he tells the truth when it's hard and risky to do so, and pays the price for it year after year, and doesn't budge.
Pseudonym, what is wrong with you?

swallow your pride, and grab onto confidence. You know Rand Paul is on our side, slap yourself in the face and let him do his job. Don't tie his hands, that is what Trey Grayson wants, wake up, you have been here too long to be asleep on this.

I wasn't talking about Rand here whatsoever.
I misunderstood you as well...
Sorry about that...

while I agree...
with your general statement. I, personally, would lie if it meant saving a man's life, and how much less than a man's life is our country worth?
I'll not throw absolutist stones at someone who uses clever wordplay, if that is what that is.
If it is not clever wordplay, and it is in fact what it sounds like, then I would retract my support, but I think I will at least give him the benefit of the doubt on that before I do so. In other words, watch what he does after he is elected and not just the rhetoric beforehand.

Ron Paul 2012!
I don't see it folks....
I don't see Rand trying to deceive anyone.....he seems to be pretty damn honest to me.....
It's a nice thought. But we
It's a nice thought. But we wouldn't feel very good about being decepticons just like the neos.
But I get your point.
I think everyone is overreacting and should give themselves a timeout.
Let Rand explain his thoughts on the issues.
Some clarity might be gained.
Or we could have are own little civil war here on the DP, and pretty much ruin everything.
Context is important.
I'm willing to wait.
