Cato Institute: good, bad, or indifferent?

0 votes

I just read the the best fundraising letter that I have ever received and it was from the Cato Institute.

I have, of course, heard of the Cato Institute and what they do, but I don't know much about their past achievements or history.

I was wondering if there are any opinions out there about this think tank (actually, I'm sure there are opinions out there, I want to know what they are). I thought this would be the best community to ask and to receive honest answers.

Thanks! :)

don't know about CATO, but

don't know about CATO, but all I remember in 2008 was big L Libertarian after big L Libertarian coming out against Ron Paul.

they lost all credibility with me at that point...

They're against the

They're against the Copenhagen treaty and pretty much anything to do with global warming which is a plus in my book. Haven't really looked much into them besides that though.

CATO

I've been following them of late. Their articles challenge the status quo of left vs. right and I've enjoyed reading them.

For the most part I read Lew Rockwell's, Mises.org and Mish Shedlock's blogs, G. Griffin's Unfiltered news on Fridays, and receive emails from the Future of Freedom Foundation, Campaign for Liberty, Strike the Root, Restore the Republic, Global Research, The Big Picture, and various left and right blogs (Townhall, Slate, Consortium, ICH,) as well as various investment and religious sites.

Hard to keep up with it all, but I do my best. Cato sends me one email a day with all of their latest articles that I can click on to read if of interest and I compare these versus all the others I read. So far, so good.

The Heritage Foundation is what Hannity and Limbaugh keep plugging. I'd be more leery of following their advice just because of this connection, but I haven't found the time to fully research them yet. Hannity and Limbaugh support the undeclared wars, so I would imagine the Heritage Foundation does as well. Once I finish my research on this, I'll blog about it.

Definitely agree about the

Heritage Foundation.

Originally, Under Ed Crane's

guidance, they were a radically libertarian organization, particularly on foreign policy. They even had Murray Rothbard on staff. But the influence of corporate money made them more reluctant to step on corporate toes. There is still a libertarian influence within their organization, but it is often drowned out by the big business influence.

That's my perception

I'm pretty sure they were officially against Ron Paul in 2008, on the grounds that he is an alleged racist. If it wasn't the official Cato stance, it was definitely the opinion of some of its bloggers. Dr. Paul graciously spoke there after that, on auditing the Fed. They featured him alongside a pro-Fed representative, which I thought was an indication that they have compromised values. Real libertarians ought to know all about the Fed without having to listen to bogus justifications for their existence from one of their lackeys.

Here is who controls them

Dig into those folks. They look pretty corporate. In general, I use this yardstick: Do they fight for TRUTH, straight up and without apology? It makes the decisions about who to donate to really easy. And inexpensive.

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

Thanks...

I did see that link, but I don't see anything particularly incriminating.

The institute seems to be dedicated to a limited government, a return to the Constitution, and a they don't take money from the government.

I wasn't necessarily considering donating, but their letter was so effective, it piqued my interest in the institute.

Again, thanks paul4won!

I'm looking forward to your answers
