where to invest 10k
Submitted by sambachico on Mon, 11/23/2009 - 01:02
I've recently sold some vintage tin (collector car) to pay for development on my land. With the spike in Gold, does anyone see things getting absolutely horrid for the dollar in the next 3 months? I've got about 10k sitting in the bank right now and the more I see gold go up the more I get nervous.
I don't think there is a Gold bubble; it's inversely proportional to the purchasing power of the dollar. So what should someone like me do with the money for safekeeping or to at least maintain value?
I'm not a goldbug or a paperbug =)

hedge against inflation
if you want to hedge against inflation then silver, gold, platinum, palladium.
if you can get cheap land somewhere, then that is always good. even if you over-speculate the going market price, then land is always, always, always, going to be worth something. land never goes down in the long run.

Items that don't lose their value, hard goods or dry goods
My first thought is buy gold and silver coins/bullion.
These are other things to consider:
You can buy power inverter and solar panels if anything happens to the grid you can power tools with it, pumps, radio, etc. Rechargeable batteries, water purification, camping gear, air tight/waterproof storage.
You could easily spend a couple grand on handgun, shotgun, hunting rifle with scope and ammo. A good safe. Binoculars or night vision or thermal vision goggles are a bundle. Rice, dried beans, sugar, flour, oats, honey, and lots of liquor (Vodka, Whiskey/Scotch, Rum). Vitamins and supplements can be expensive too. Things like vitamin C and D, Calcium, etc.

I've already invested about 10k in solar too 2 years ago.
So I guess I'm good there on the self-sufficiency side.
5200 watts of panels. (120 43 watt panels)
I think I'm going to buy a $700 pistol. This is never a bad investment as long as it's locked up at night. Get a CCW to go with it.

coined silver is at least
coined silver is at least recognizable, so when you try to trade it later people will know that its .999 (silver eagle etc.)
at least thats one school of thought.

Buy a mixture. Everything should be .999 or better imo
Try to get items that were circulated or wholesale as they are cheaper.
When buying look for the "over spot" price and get as low a number over spot per once as possible.
