"Will The Unemployment Disaster Be Obama's Katrina?"

..

There's a Category 5 storm about to make landfall, and the president and the officials in charge of preparing for the approaching disaster don't seem to be particularly worried. Sound familiar?

Just as Katrina exposed critical weaknesses in the priorities and competence of the Bush administration, the unfolding unemployment disaster is threatening to do the same for the Obama White House.

The members of the Obama administration may not be attending a birthday party at John McCain's ranch in Sedona or shopping for expensive Ferragamo shoes in New York as a great American city is destroyed, but their decidedly lackadaisical response to what job losses are doing to multiple great American cities raises the question: will unemployment be Barack Obama's Katrina?

His economic team's resistance to a second round of stimulus, "lukewarm" reaction to Congressional jobs legislation, and prioritization of deficit reduction over job creation certainly has the feel of a taking-in-the-damage-from-2,500-feet flyover moment.

"There is no discussion of a package like a second stimulus," said deputy White House press secretary Jennifer Psaki. "But we are working closely with Congress and consulting with outside experts to determine the right policies and next steps." No word on whether those outside experts include the 1 in 6 workers currently unemployed or underemployed.

Of course, the real problem isn't the outside experts; the administration's wrongheaded approach is a classic inside job. Sen. Sherrod Brown summed it up on CNN, telling John King that when it comes to putting the focus on Main Street, the president's "advisors are mixed."

Which makes one wonder: what level of unemployment would it take to unmix them? Even 10.2 percent, the highest level in 26 years, after 22 straight months of job losses, doesn't seem to have quickened the pulse of Larry Summers and Tim Geithner.

And it's not like the levees haven't begun to crack, with the real unemployment rate -- factoring in discouraged and partially employed workers -- at 17.5 percent, the unemployment rate for workers aged 16 to 24 at 19 percent, and the unemployment rate for young African-Americans at 30 percent. What's more, the average length of unemployment is at a record high, while the ratio of job seekers to open positions is now 6 to 1.

A new ABC/Washington Post poll reported that 30 percent of Americans say someone in their home has lost a job. I'm guessing that Summers and Geithner are comfortably in the other 70 percent. But even if it hasn't hit home for them, it should be clear that unemployment is going to be the singular issue of 2010.

Obama to Hold Jobs Summit in December

There will be plenty of unemployed people there to participate (if they are allowed to attend).

November 12, 2009

In the face of a 10.2 percent unemployment rate -- the highest since 1983 -- President Obama on Thursday announced plans for a jobs summit in December.

President Obama took time Thursday -- before jetting off to Asia for a 10-day tour -- to announce a December jobs summit aimed at synching job growth with the massive government spending meant to "break the back" of the recession.

The announcement came as the Labor Department reported another 502,000 new jobless claims, two high-tech mainstays announced big layoffs and the unemployment rate reached 10.2 percent.

Obama said the White House forum will gather CEOs, small business owners, economists, financial experts and representatives from labor unions and nonprofit groups "to talk about how we can work together to create jobs and get this economy moving again."

"We all know that there are limits to what government can and should do, even during such difficult times. But we have an obligation to consider every additional, responsible step that we can take to encourage and accelerate job creation in this country," he said.

He added that the forum is intended to prevent making "any ill-considered decisions -- even with the best intentions -- particularly at a time when our resources are so limited. But it's just as important that we are open to any demonstrably good idea to supplement the steps we've already taken to put America back to work."

As economic suffering increases, so does the potential for

Not only do they not care about unemployment...

It is what they desire to push their agenda. In 2012 when 40+% of Americans are out of work being the welfare state we are Obama will be put back into office declaring that the government will take care of you. Just like the health care bill in whatever form they will vote it in, and many if not a majority of Americans will flood the medical facilities for everything from a splinter to a bruise, but it will cost them nothing, and we know how Americans respond to welfare, once it is installed there is no politicians with spine enough to stand up against it knowing that the majority are happy living off of the labor of others. I have a feeling that this article is misleading in that Obama's Katrina will occur thousands of miles away where empires go to die, as he sends more troops to die for the heroin and corporate pipe line, military families are going to start raising their voices, but I predict (as does Obama) that no matter how bad the economy or war get if he gets his welfare bill passed the majority of sheep will line up for some more of that in 2012. Just my take.

In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

Destroy the free markets and this is one of the consequences.

If we had free market, Constitutional money instead of government imposed bank manufactured money, we would never have these huge economic collapses such as we had in the 1930's and as we are having today. The boom and bust cycle is a direct result of a faulty, predatory, unstable, unsustainable monetary system, and we have that monetary system so that the banks can fleece the public with their government granted power of creating money out of thin air and loaning it to individuals, businesses, and the government at interest.

We not only need the bill to audit the FED, but we need to abolish the FED and return to using gold and silver coins as legal tender as clearly specified in the Constitution.

Article I,

Section 10. No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance, or confederation; grant letters of marque and reprisal; coin money; emit bills of credit; make anything but GOLD AND SILVER COIN a tender in payment of debts; pass any bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts, or grant any title of nobility.

What has been Bush's and Obama's solution but to get the banks to print up even more money out of thin air and loan it to the federal government at interest (nice burden for our children to pay to the banks later on). This is the problem, not the solution. And what did the federal government do with all that newly borrowed money but pass it out to their bank and wall street friends. This is one big scam. Obama fiddles as America burns.

If unemployment reaches

If unemployment reaches above 13 or 14, I think it will be worse than Bush's Katrina

Real unemployment is about

Real unemployment is about 20 percent right now.

Only if the

collapse of the dollar doesn't come first. Either way, Obama is toast....along with all of us...Unless a whole lot of people wake up in a big hurry.

I'd like to believe that the

I'd like to believe that the unemployment number is going to be the worst thing that happens during Obama's presidency.

Unemployment is 100%

if you're the one without a job. This issue is TOO big to tackle
nationally- it has to be addressed on a small scale. As in
a war- one skirmish at a time, one battle. I would REALLY
like to see each STATE assert it's rights and take care of it's own.
THAT is the way it was always meant to be. Let each State get it's
act together and get rid of most of the Fed government.
