Obama’s West Point speech must explain why Afghanistan is not his Vietnam
Seldom can a speech be called historic before it is delivered, but the one that President Obama will make tomorrow night already qualifies.
In one address at the West Point military academy, the Commander-in-Chief of US Armed Forces must convince Afghanistan, Pakistan and his own generals that his commitment to prevailing against al-Qaeda and the Taleban is unwavering. Mr Obama must also persuade his party and the American people that he has settled at last on a strategy for extricating America from the Afghan conflict with US honour and security intact.
For Mr Obama, it is the speech that must explain why Afghanistan is not his Vietnam.

In Paris, a spokesman for the French foreign ministry refused to confirm or deny the report, which said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made the request on Thursday in a telephone call to French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Mrs Clinton spoke by telephone with Mr Kouchner on Thursday but gave no details other than that he was one of many allies she called about coordinating efforts in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan: Gordon Brown announces number of British troops to pass 10,000
Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, has confirmed that Britain's total military effort in Afghanistan will increase to over 10,000 service personnel.

n a detailed Commons statement, Mr Brown confirmed that all the conditions had been met to allow an extra 500 troops to be deployed in December - taking the force level to 9,500.
But he also disclosed that when special forces were included, the "total military effort" in Afghanistan will be in excess of 10,000 troops.
The announcement came as it emerged a soldier from 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards had been killed in southern Afghanistan today, the Ministry of Defence said. Next of kin have been informed. The death takes to 99 the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan this year, and the total killed since 2001 to 236.
Mr Brown's statement comes just a day before US President Barack Obama, after months of deliberation, is expected to announce that he will send up to 35,000 more US Forces.
