Now they're meddling in college sports. I swear, this is not from the Onion:

WASHINGTON -- House lawmakers are gearing up for a vote as soon as next week on a bill aimed at forcing a national college-football playoff.

Approval of the legislation by an Energy and Commerce subcommittee would represent the most significant action yet by Congress in its oversight of college football. Plans for a markup next week, still tentative as of late Friday, appeared to signal growing congressional support for the idea, which President Barack Obama also backed during the 2008 campaign.

For the past decade or so, the process of picking a national champion has been run by the Bowl Championship Series, a group that began with six major college conferences and has since expanded. The BCS runs a ranking system that picks the two teams that play for the national championship each year....

...But the BCS system's congressional critics charge that the system frequently is unfair to college teams that aren't traditional powerhouses.

Earlier this year, for example, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch held a hearing on the BCS after his home state Utah Utes went undefeated yet were denied a chance to play for the national championship.

Tragedy, isn't it? Land of the free and home of the brave, and we have no idea who the top college football team is. We have a right to know! (Even if we have no idea what the Fed is doing behind closed doors.)

What a waste!

Why don't the politicians spend more time on important issues.

Some issues that should be addressed include Audit the Fed, just END THE FED, BRING "ALL" THE TROOPS HOME, DEFEND "OUR" COUNTRY NOT EVERY OTHER COUNTRY, and ELIMINATE THE IRS.

THE DEPT OF EDUCATION DOES NOT "PROVIDE' ANY EDUCATION BENEFIT TO ANYONE. OUT OF EVERY $1M RECIVED BY THE DEPT, 10% IS USED TO PAY FOR "ADMINISTRATIVE" SALARIES IN DC! NO BENEFIT FOR EDUCATION THERE!

I know zip about football

but they are wasting my taxpayer time and cash on more bullshit? Who was the first one who thought they had the right to interfere with games? And who followed up on that? Sounds like the aholes I grew up with who found sports superior to life????

Colchester, New London County, Connecticut

The BCS is a big steaming pile of doggie doo doo.

That and any ranking involving "opinion" polls.

The only rankings that count are those earned on the field. I really don't care about the gravy train linked to the bowl games. Really. I don't. There should be a playoff with teams chosen based on their winning their conferences. Don't like that? Your conference has too many powerhouse teams to only send the winner to the playoffs? Then change conferences and shut the hell up.

That being vented, no part of government has any authority or jurisdiction in this matter and should butt the hell out. All associated and affected schools that any hearing or "law" touches should IGNORE CONgress completely.

There is ZIP, ZILCH, NADA in the Constitution about collegiate football. Therefore, ANY, did you get that? ANY law or other action by Congress even remotely related to the subject of collegiate football has no force or effect upon any university, college, or even a fan. Any time spent by Congress on such an issue is an exercise in ego masturbation and can safely be ignored without consequence.

I heard Thomas Jefferson....

had a pretty fast time in the forty.
And George Washington was offered
a full ride to Texas.
And by the way Ron Paul was no slowpoke
in high school.....
He graduated from Dormont High School in Dormont, Pennsylvania, in 1953 with honors. He excelled in
track and field, winning the Pennsylvania state championship in the 220-yard dash and coming in second in
the 440-yard dash as a junior. He once beat a young man who eventually went to the Olympics. He was
also on the wrestling team and president of the student council.

This is right up ther with steroids in baseball.

I called my rep and asked him what authority the representative for my district had over someone using steroids. Aren't you a lawmaker, where is your law enforcement authorization ? Where does this fall ? Is it interstate commerce ? INSANITY, THEY DO THESE THINGS WHEN THEY NEED A DISTRACTION FROM THE CRIMINAL TERMINAL INSANE THINGS THEY ACTUALLY HAVE BILLS FOR. Call them all and tell them to take a flying leap.

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow

Playoff

Who can answer this? If Congress had a playoff, who would come out on top?

give Obama the Heisman

end of discussion.

woo hoo!

Lets skip Congress and go

Lets skip Congress and go directly to the UN.

What does the UN Security Council think about a college football playoff system?

I'M DYING TO KNOW

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Good one!

And closer to the truth than I like.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Now THERE'S a constitutional use of government!

Where in the constitution was this again???

I guess I missed it.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

orin hatch the asshole

orin hatch and others like him are the reason that the dems are in control

he along with the rest of the republican party have their heads so far up their asses that they cant see that a private ranking system that was put in place without their approval is what we are using to pick #1 not any government handout from pompious assholes that have sold out our country to the highest bidder.

these bought and paid for traitors need to be hung from the goal posts
in a fiting setting like the rose bowl. a senic roman colisium on a saturday in january, thumbs down to traitors and assholes.

it is way past time to rid the world of this cancer

DAN

One step closer to Idiocracy...

..."damn, I thought your head would be bigger!"

This is easy to understand

This is easy to understand actually. Play off games would give TV networks many more games to run therefor making hundreds of millions more dollars. This is all about money nothing more.

www.retakecongress.com

yep

just like the BCS is about keeping the money in certain hands...it's always about the money.

Ya Know

You explained it wasn't from the Onion and I know you would have no stake in punking your own readers, but I just had to click on the link to see for myself it wasn't from the Onion.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Defend Liberty!

OMG!

Our country is crumbing and THIS is what they are doing in Congress?!!! I am so angry I could spit.

Blessings )o(

considering what they could be doing

i am glad they're distracted.

"The two weakest arguments for any issue on the House floor are moral and constitutional"
Ron Paul

How can we avoid...

...a complete revolt or revolution when they keep doing stupid s**t like this?

It is so completely out of hand.

We need a reset.

WTF?

They have NO BUSINESS meddling with college sports. Although, I agree that the BCS needs to go, the Feds are not the way to go about it... Who wants to bet that they'll sneak in some kind of "National College Student Registry" (or an other kind of power grab) into the bill?

Distractions, and somebody must be

getting paid off; there has to be a profit incentive in this.

Well, if we can't afford bread at least we will have government

mandated circuses. And the circuses will even have a government mandated playoff system "level the playing field" .

Who wants to bet me that someone will try to stick in something that gives the "disadvantaged" athletics programs extra points or spots games based on their racial makeup or amount of funding?

"What was taken from the boomers, it ain't there, what was taken from the X'ers it ain't there, what is being taken from their great, great, great squared grandchildren it ain't there. Some generation just has to have the guts to quit passing it on." Me

*May the only ones to touch your junk, be the ones you want to touch your junk.*

It seems reasonable to me

This doesn't seem to ridiculous when you take into account how involved the federal government is in the very existence of colleges in the present system. Is it out of line for a patron to place conditions on the use of his money? How can these debtor colleges and universities refuse their lender. If you don't want the federal government dictating your actions, don't take its money and don't get involved in its franchises. For colleges, that means no FAFSA and no grant money.

republic

As I understand it, the bowl

As I understand it, the bowl system is a way to reward the players and coaches for a successful season by giving them a week's vacation in a sunny spot. If they do a playoff, there will be no reward except for the top team. I'm not so sure we need to know who the college football champ is. It's so irrelevant

Surprising that some would consider the rule of law

optional if the subject is football. The BCS was born a conspiracy of some universities enriching themselves at the expense of other universities. Does the state of Florida through its university have the right to cheat Utah through its university?
Apparently this is important to the people of Utah or Senator Hatch would not be doing this. For better or worse this is representative government.
Anti-trust law may not be rational, but it's still law.

rule of the lawless

john, its been along time since the senators from any state have worked for the state. they represent the us government and not the states.

this is one of the many problems that we need to correct. change the constitution back to a senator is elected by the state legislature and not at large and we may get back to some checks and balances.

also we could recall these traitors when they do not do what the people of the states vote to have done. as it is now we cannot get these bastards out and they continue to vote ae they please without any regard for their constituents

tea parties prove only one thing, they will listen to your concerns and still vote against the will of the people without any worry whatso ever

if we had our constituional state militias we could alter the course that this country is on. since we dont we will have hell to pay to get back our republic

may GOD bless this land once again when the cancer is gone

DAN

You might be right

But I don't recall seeing anything about college football playoffs in the Constitution.

True enough Michael,

but it doesn't say anything about Social Security or Medicare or Nasa or most of what the Feds do.
If fraud is committed across state lines wouldn't that bring the Feds in.

Call their office and thank them

Tell them how this is so much more important than auditing the Fed. Maybe they'll see the insanity. Nah.
