By raising expectations for a "moneybomb" Internet fundraiser today (12/16), Rand Paul's U.S. Senate campaign is walking a high risk/high reward tightrope. If campaign manager David Adams' public hopes are reached to raise $700,000 in one day, even skeptics will have to take notice of Paul's sustained success. But, if the moneybomb falls far short of the goal, Paul's upstart candidacy could be walking into a warning sounded by rival Trey Grayson, who has suggested that Paul's campaign is likely to peak too soon.
Meanwhile, a Grayson fundraiser to be hosted by Kentucky's Mitch McConnell and originally scheduled for Dec. 7 in New York, was postponed. "As a result of the congressional schedule, it has been moved to 1st quarter of next year," Grayson campaign manager Nate Hodson said.
Adams says the Paul campaign has raised $300,000 in the 4th quarter so far, so he hopes for a $700,000 moneybomb to get the campaign to $1 million in the quarter. And the Rand Paul campaign website appears to raise expectations even higher:

Paul's campaign raised $1,010,668 in the third quarter, while Grayon's campaign raised $642,857. Through the 3rd quarter, however, Grayson's total fundraising was slightly higher, $1,245,992 total compared to $1,121,693 for the Paul campaign.
Paul surged nine points to take a narrow lead over Grayson in the latest WHAS11/Survey USA poll in early November. But, a full 34% of respondents chose neither Grayson or Paul.

Veteran political observers wonder if Paul's campaign is sustainable. The moneybomb might just answer that question.

David Adams Has Done a Good Job So Far I Think
But this is the second time now he has way overshot our money bombs and allowed the media to spin it as a failure for not reaching HIS stated number. How he could make this mistake a second time I just do not get.
Still, Adams has been working very hard and has been the manager of a campaign that went from underdog to front-runner in two months flat so it's hard to complain too much.

Well the campaign manager saying $700,000 is a damn idiot. Sorry all but this money bomb is not going to raise 700k and will be lucky to reach $300,000

It was a mistake but...
Realistically it's hard for the media, or even Grayson to say "They only raised $200,000 yesterday!" They tried this with our first moneybomb, where we raised $436,000 with a goal of $1,000,000, and Adams told them we were "crying all the way to the bank" and it made the point pretty well. So while he should stop overdoing it, I think they'll be looking at our overall fundraising for the quarter. I hope to heaven that we beat Grayson again...

people have Christmas spending on their minds - high unemployment...300-500K would be awesome!
but I hope this article makes people more willing to donate to Rand just to make the naysayers wrong.

A nice thought but that is
A nice thought but that isn't going to happen Liberty. Rand will need to raise over $50,000 an hour to reach a 700k goal and that just isn't going to happen.
A campaign should never be making comments as to a total of a money bomb because you just don't know. The pledges were less than 1000 and the avg donation is like $20. This was a complete stupid statement by the campaign manager and it will now surely backfire as the article stated.

he is just putting a high number out there to perhaps push people harder to donate - but as the article rightly says this could backfire and be used by Grayson and his spin doctors.
