AP: Ron Paul Goes from Ridicule to Respect
By Meredith Simons © Houston Chronicle
December 16, 2009
Ron Paul is a white-haired, soft-voiced, 74-year-old doctor who has twice failed in presidential campaigns and is frequently derided by his Republican colleagues as an ideologue from the party's libertarian fringe.
No one would have been surprised if the Lake Jackson congressman had slipped off the political radar after his 2008 quixotic bid for the presidency, his ambitions for higher office thwarted.
But Paul has refused to go out to the political pasture to live in comfortable irrelevance. As odd as it may seem, he has become one of the most influential Republicans in a capital city dominated by liberal Democrats.
The subject that has brought him to prominence is the same issue that subjected him to ridicule from establishment Republicans for years: his long-standing opposition to the nation's monetary system and the Federal Reserve Board that prints money and controls its supply.
“On economic matters, he was seen as a way outside the mainstream,” University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray said. “His views were somewhat 19th century in the view of a lot of economists.”
Well, they say history repeats itself, and suddenly Paul's “19th-century” thinking seems appealing to those suffering through the first economic meltdown of the 21st century.
No longer ignored
Paul's proposal to audit the Federal Reserve — first introduced by the Texas congressman more than 20 years ago — recently sailed through the House Financial Services Committee.

Quixotic?? I swear whenever there is a RP article
there are 5 or so mandatory words/phrases, these "journalists" have to use
1) Quixotic
2) fringe
3) radical
4) internet crowd
5) isolationist
Then you always have the comments section:
1) RP and the Paultards are wackos
2) i agree with some of his stuff, but he is wayyyyyyyy out there
3) If we followed his policies we would be back in the 19th century
Now mind you, none of these douchebags ever corroborate or try to substantiate their points. They do little cut and run tactics, because they are little people.
Cheers,
TimB
how true!

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow
I get ANGRY...
but then I feel exhilarated, because I can see that the "establishment" (commie bastards including the media) are running SCARED! They are truly SH!TING BRICKS. Yes! Let them fear for a change.
Say YES to Dr. NO
Say YES to Dr. NO
why do these idiots insist on calling us 'nuts'?
...so people who believed in Ron's message before it became mainstream (most of us here) are all nut jobs. Thank god all those 'normal' people from the mainstream joined.
Good to know the AP hasn't stopped trying to insult us - the battle is still very much alive!
One thing we can say for sure
without the huge money bombs in 2007 none of this would be in the public for discussion.
Long live the revolution

Want Ron Paul? Register Republican Now
This is a good article. The truth.
"In the House, Paul was ignored by Democrats and marginalized by Republicans. He was punished for the very views that earn him so much adulation today.[Indeed]"
Twice failed?
".....has twice failed in presidential campaigns ......" I guess it depends on what your definition of "failed" is. Winning a fraudulent election and office in a corporate shell of a once-sovereign nation, is hardly a success, in my book. However, campaigning twice and revealing THAT FRAUD to a previously-unaware citizenry is very much a success!
Ron Paul IS my president! That's what is still great about this country, and world. We can still have our own opinion.
Wow
The work the international banksters put in to frame the debate in the 20th century really shows when you read someone writing so surely from such an ignorant perspective.

I always want to break something when I here ignorant
parrots try to describe this great man's journey and life long commitment.
They always have to emphasize ideas like 'fringe' and 'quixotic'.
I want to slap 'em.
"Creator is a judicial creator. It was a man who gave away his liberty. So it had to be a man who would legally take that liberty and authority back. So Creator created another man (let's call him second man) who did exactly that." D.W.B.

It was the AP that encouraged the ridicule

You can tell the author
You can tell the author doesn't "get it"...free markets were only workable in the 19th century?
Was a great article
I love the kuddos for Ron Paul. Couple observations I made:
1. Anyone ever ask the press or Republicans why Nixon axed the gold standard? (we know why but good to help educate others)
2. Anyone ask why the leadership of the Republican party never formally apologized publicly to Dr. Ron Paul for painting him as an idiot during the debates?

More importantly
Why are they NOT touting him now as the only viable candidate that will restore public confidence in the government?
For a mainstream publication,
this is an encouraging article.
ugh..
the old free market theory was never disproved, where comes the separation between 19th century and 20th century economic law? i don't hear 19th century physics and 20th century physics. he lives on mars?
good point
I hate the Houston Chronicle. I hate the backhanded belittling of Ron Paul here and the implication that he aggressively "refused to go away" when in fact he's in demand on TV because he makes sense and gets good reviews for whatever show features him. Why don't they just tell it like it is for once? And saying his audit the Fed bill "sailed through" the Financial Service Committee, when it was stuck there for ages and ultimately absorbed into a larger bill that was so odious no Republican even voted for it, is also a lie.
