O.K. a serious Off Topic ! Rock Hounding !

When the weather got bad for winter I found the DP and it will be a check in everyday from now on,But ?
When I get time off and the weather is good I have a Fisher Gold Bug and have been building my nest egg.
Gold it is a fever!I find some very good nuggets that are jewelry quality that get more than the price per ounce, the rest I put away for a rainy day.
I make my best money with what are called "specimens"
these are Crystals and the like that universities will buy to put in their geology specimen cases for perfect examples of the mineral itself, not a bad hobby income minus the beer.
anybody else up for it ?

I used to be a rock hound

I used to be a rock hound when I was a kid. Then I went to college and studied geology, mineralogy and engineering. I might actually use all that education in 2010, once economic reality sets in. I have a few prospects, but I haven't spent a lot of time actively collecting or developing anything lately.

Aside from gold, what types of mineral specimens do you collect?

If you had samples

in College then you know what I try to find, any near perfect example of a certain mineral showing classic crystal structure or composition or layering of the different types of Rocks and minerals.
I look for examples of all classes Igneous,Plutonic,Sedimentary, and Metamorphic. The hardest Specimens to find are any examples of Twinned or Paralleled crystal growth or any other unusual crystal axis structure for a certain mineral.

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

I've been a rock hound for many years.

But, I'm still trying to learn.
Can you give me a simple home method to test a rock for Silver, Platinum, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Sure! the best

I can give you is first find out where the "old timers" hang out for breakfast and bring up the subject ,you will find that they are more than willing to SHOW you where is and what you are actually looking for in your area just for a ride and a few beers and lunch!By the way this is where you go at 4 AM if you are looking for a job also.

Thanks, but I already found the rocks.

I collected about a pickup load of white silica, quartz, type rocks a few years ago and made a small rock garden for decoration in my yard.
After the sun hit some of these rocks, a black, very thin rock hard surface leached out from them. I took one to a rock shop close by and they couldn't identify the black part of the rock and suggested I send it off to get it analyzed.

I'm just looking for a home method to analyze rocks, like the old timers must have had who prospected far, far away from any town.
Or is that now a lost science in modern America?
Thanks.

Actually...

my family owns a good amount of claims in California and Oregon. I've a retired uncle that is panning 1 oz a week for fun. He also collects diamonds, although the ones he gets are worth like nothing.... industrial grade.

It is out there if you want to take the time to do it...

Nah...

I'm relocating to a different state and don't have much to do with the family businesses anyways. I just thought it was cool the last time I visited there that my old drunken uncle takes 20 hours a week to freeze his ass off to pan gold when all he is really doing is making an excuse to get out of the house...

However, he really does make about a grand a week doing it.

So again, it is out there....lol

There was a time when this

was all that mattered,Gold was the only thing you could trade for, and it was the only thing in demand.
It was hard work to get it.but think about this a grand a week in gold now would have been about 10,000 dollars in gold during the RUSH! I don't know if you have ever actually been hungry, like 3-4 days with nothing to eat ? 5 dollars is a lot of money.

I just spent 38 days in the upper Mojave.. I went in with 2 Snickers bars and a knife.

I ate the second Snickers on the drive out.. I'm aware of what hunger is.

Hunger really has nothing to do with money.. that is a common misconception.

Did you?

Spend a little time at Ray's house ?

One question...

What the $#%@ is a smart person like you doing eating Snickers bars...? That's some serious poison!

(then again, they probably have a shelf life similar to uranium)

I need to say

I think you could be an idiot that broke down because you were not prepared or your full of Siit !
WHERE in the upper Mojave That is in my back yard buddy !!
Where,???????????????????
Just so you know, I found out,You do not come in here and try to bullshit these guys,They have all been there done that and will make you to show your nuts buddy !

I got a gold pan and metal detector recently myself

So far I've found a nickle, a beer can, a pair of pliers, and a hemmoroid cream tube. I can't wait for spring to go to some good places.

Mike !

The pan DOES NOT work in you're Ceptic tank !

I asked for paydirt for christmas

nobody understood what I was talking about. So I dug a bucket from a local stream, threw some bbs and pellets in it, and panned away. It's fun so I broke up the pellets and painted the pieces gold and let my gf pan it. I'll break it to her gently someday.

I got the joke

But if you ever get serious let me know !
I have a friend that has the "fever" as I do and owns a 10 wheel drive Well drilling outfit,We go around punching holes looking for Rhodium all the time for fun!

I'm very serious. I just don't have anywhere good to go

I'd LOVE to come out and really find something. Right now my best prospect is the beach after a good storm. Someday I'd like to take a few weeks and go all over to the different "treasure hunting" spots. I have the fever, but nowhere to really satisfy it.

Mike a friend of mine

told me he would go up to the colorado rivers and he would use some kind of a net and stretch across a spring and he would collect little gold particles doing it. He told me you could make about 8-10 dollars an hour doing it but heres the kicker that was nearly 20 years ago.

Keep in mind that

Everytime it rains hard and washes good it make a new "cut "in the banks and washes more down! there is no end to it.

With all the goldbugs around here

Has anyone had the idea of actually prospecting .I have heard that their is still plenty of gold waiting to be found .Ive also been told that you can find plenty of golddust off the coast of Alaska.

That's what I do !

But never limit you're self to just gold,Take the time to get good books and study everything you can about ROCKS!
The crystals I find make me more than the few nuggets that are found.Keep in mind that gold is everywhere any state any county, you only have to look for volcanic activity even in the slightest, with a good detector.
