Ron Paul - Top #1 Conservative for 2009 - Washington Independent

1. Ron Paul

Two years ago, many Republicans couldn’t stand him. The longtime congressman from Texas made his quixotic presidential campaign all about the Constitution and the Federal Reserve, seemingly to the exclusion of other issues, and for his trouble he was excluded from some of the debates. Reporters, hungry for soundbites and attack lines, and interested more in who would win the nomination than what the candidates thought, found him tiresome — at the very first GOP debate in 2007, Chris Matthews muttered “Oh, God” when Paul started talking about “original intent.” He raised $35 million and won 1.2 million primary and caucus votes, but when 2008 ended, his slogan sounded extreme. The “Ron Paul Revolution”? What did that word have to do with modern American politics?

But at the close of 2009, Paul seems less like an outsider and more like a pioneer. For the first time in his congressional career, he got every Republican colleague on board with a piece of legislation: HR 1207, an attempt to “audit” the Federal Reserve’s activity. His rhetoric and some of his imagery (like Revolutionary War re-enactment) have been copied wholesale by the Tea Party movement. The beliefs held by Paul that were once considered out of the mainstream — a collapsing dollar, obsession with the Fed, an encroaching North American Union, gold as the only safe investment — are now de regueur for Republican candidates. What presidential loser has had more of an impact on the party that rejected him?

Wiegel makes some good points

but Ron Paul's campaign was about far more than just the Fed and strict constitutionalism.
Many people really started to wake up to his message when he stood like a rock in that line up of neocons in the first debates and challenged US foreign policy to its rotten and evil core.

Good

article...lots of good comments, too...

the only part that made me cringe

was the presidential loser.
Ron wasn't the loser, america was.

"The two weakest arguments for any issue on the House floor are moral and constitutional"
Ron Paul

Well, Ron's not much of a conservative

If a conservative, in the most classical sense of the term, means one who wants to keep things as they are (ie. conserve)...then he is definitely not one. He is one who favors change and progress.

Many people think he

wants to keep things as they were. That is what upsets some neocons because they think that is old foggie and won't happen.

it's funny how many democrats i know

consider themselves liberal, yet laugh at the ideas of Thomas Jefferson.

david weigel

so glad he wrote about rp!

I will have real hope

when I receive just one email from a former neocon about Ron Paul. My peeps NEVER send me anything encouraging or about Ron Paul or about bad medicine, chemtrails, 911, Masons, Bilderberg, nation building, bring our troops home, flouride in the water, FEMA camps, martial law. They never tell me to watch a special by Jesse, a documentary. When these zombies start actually sending an occasional email about something important, I'll be encouraged. The only thing I receive is jokes about Obama. Give them half a chance and they will say something good about Palin--gosh.

What is your qualm

with 9/11 Truth? Explain the 9/11 "Meteorite" with only jet fuel and a pancake collapse please. Thanks.

The qualm is

in promoting and lying about Ron's view of 911 which you truther idiots do.

I do not promote or lie

about Dr. Paul's views on 9/11. What I do know is that with the overwhelming evidence supporting controlled demolition of WTC 1, 2, and 7 Ron Paul would support justice and a new independent investigation. This would inevitably, without a doubt, rewrite the history books pertaining to what 9/11 was, also shining new light as to why we are in 2 illegal wars.

Oh, and answer the question douchebag. Explain the 9/11 Meteorite with only jet fuel and a pancake collapse. Thanks.

Meteorite

Your fantasies will never gain traction and dont start spouting theories as if we never have an enemy. These inconsistencies will be there in any catatrophic event. So the conclusion about "inside job" is in your stupid brain, you jackass. If you want to ask questions, we all saw the jetliners crash into the buildings and the whole world saw it, you birdbrain. Now go back to your asylum.

nittgritt

the way you are writing you come across as the jackass. And I don't even take part in this discussion, just saying. Why do you need to insult people, if you don't agree with them, you can either address their arguments or you can ignore them, but what you're doing doesn't seem all that grown up to me.
But it's not only you, you have only been the most extreme case, the others (wether truthers or not) should also use their free speech properly.

I suggest

you look more into this lump of molten iron known as the 9/11 meteorite. Don't worry, I'll go back to my asylum once I finish getting my Masters in Finance. Someone's gotta keep up the intellectual fight, and we all know it won't be you nittgritt.

Finally, finally recognition

and it is growing exponentially. He WILL be our next President if the Republic lasts that long.
