Viva Cuba Libre!
Batista was bad, but quality of life before the Revolution was much higher, and Castro/Che were far more deadly in power.
The Cuban people are right to hate Communism, and while as a noninterventionist, I don't think its our job to fix Cuba I have the utmost respect for Cubans who would return and fight the Communists.
For people who want to here a good case against the Revolution try reading Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots who Idolize Him. The author is a bit of a Neocon, but he did live through the revolution and fled to America as a child. It's a great perspective to read.
The Communist Revolution seems to have largely been a clever con job infused with sympathetic press, and money from rich leftists who thought the guerillas were fighting for social justice. To be fair the communists didn't openly admit to their agenda until victory was assured. The book does convincingly demonstrate how media bias can change world events.
The US press conveniently failed to report on a long counter insurgency by rural farmers and property owners, and no, most of them weren't "elites" but rather family farmers.
The worst thing about the Cuban Revolution is that the communists have convinced much of the world that they were opposed only by fascist fat cats. In truth the Communists were busy executing Catholics, Homosexuals, Rock Music Fans, and Dissenters.
Don't take my word for it. Ask someone who was there.
I never expected
To hear hispanics cheering for the man who wants to build the wall, but RP got the biggest applause of all the candidates. I think people identify with the truth and for that reason young people are joining the campaign in droves. Hitlery and Ghouliani are toast.
Miami Cubans and CIA
I grew up in Miami, watched and listened as the early exodus of supporters of dictator Fulgencio Battista started arriving. The first to arrive were the rich elite who prospered under Battista's regime, so they hated Castro and Communism.
Miami soon became a hotbed of CIA recruiting for a false-flag operation, training and arming Cubans to invade Cuba and throw out Castro - The Bay of Pigs invasion. A great book on it is "Bay of Pigs" by Peter Wieden.
That invasion failed, embarassingly, because the US didn't provide air support as we had promised. WE set them up and let them down. It is probably significant that it was a Democrat who got cold feet at the last moment. JFK. That probably was the start of their GOP infatuation.
The Cubans for years have had CIA ties. Anyone who supported talking with Castro was threatened or, in the case of one radio DJ, his car was bombed - blew his legs off (I heard the blast from my home). Where do you suppose they learned about terrorism?
They also did a lot of drug smuggling to raise money, purportedly to carry out raids on Castro or other illegal activities.
My point is, Miami's Republican Cuban mainstream is quite a bit to the right of Mussolini. They are more rabidly anti-communist than pro-freedom. Forget about getting their support. There may be a young contingent of Cubans that is open to RP's ideas, but they may be reluctant to admit it in public. Too dangerous, if Miami's anything like it was the last time I was there.

Ron Paul did awesome, I bet many Hispanics woke up yesterday.
Collectivism is slavery.
My impression of Cubans in this country...
My impression with the Cubans that have come here are that they are conservative republicans and anti-Castro/anti-communist (good thing) but have also fallen for the neocon way of doing things in some cases. So they would likely boo trading with communists with whom they disagree.
Ron Paul did very well...

Comments section beneath the article...
Why...
did they cheer when they mentioned Hugo Chavez and then boo when Ron Paul said we should trade with them?
Re: Why...
They were cheering at the mention of Chavez losing the vote on his proposed changes for Venezuela, not for Hugo Chavez himself.
People here hate Chavez almost as much as they hate Castro.
Cuban Elite control South Florida
The Cuban elite is deeply rooted to maintain the Anti Castro status-quo to keep them as privileged Latinos. Huckabee was forced to flip flop on this issue, while Dr. Paul maintains true to his moral character and never waffles. They want to export this hatred towards Venezuela not realizing sanctions and that acts of war empower Dictators and unite the flock being attacked. Cuban elite do not care about the harm being inflicted to the Cuban population on the island but as a Republican block politicians such as Huck need cater to their views.
From the Miami Herald today:
Although the candidates kept it polite on stage, Fred Thompson's campaign circulated press clippings from 2002 in which Huckabee called for an end to the trade embargo with Cuba. In a letter to President Bush, Huckabee wrote at the time: ``U.S. policy on Cuba has not accomplished its stated goal of toppling the Castro regime and instead has provided Castro with a convenient excuse for his own failed system of government.''
That stance is bound to rile many Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade, who believe that the embargo helps undermine Fidel Castro's repressive regime.
Huckabee is certain to face questions about the embargo at a Monday morning press conference in Miami, where he is expecting an endorsement from Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, one of the most prominent Cuban-American Republicans in the state.
Caught off guard, Huckabee's campaign said two hours after the debate that he had since changed his position on the embargo after consulting with Cuban-American leaders. ''He's committed to vetoing any legislation that lifts sanctions on Cuba,'' said Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart.
The local anti-Castro sentiment was evident when U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was booed for saying the U.S. should talk to Cuba and allow trade and travel
its too bad these people
its too bad these people booed when Ron Paul said he thought it was time to talk to Castro.. I wish people could understand this.. by putting embargos on the "bad" country, it only hurts the people living there and actually makes the dictator stronger.. In Iraq many people who were poor or sick died because of our embargo. It did not cause Saddam Hussain to lose power.. So what if we have disagreements on who runs the country and the way they run it.. the best thing is for the people there to get a taste of freedom and liberty and then let them take care of thier own internal problems without us! If these people had more time to study and got better access to information and not that from lame stream media they would come around! BUT... GEES looked like Ron Paul at least finally got some air time at a debate!!!!!!

A BOOing can be a good thing
When Ron Paul was BOOed in May and his opponent criticized his stand on the war, we WON! How many people WOKE UP that day in May? How many woke up as a result of the recent debate? I predict a replay of May, except that this time tons of people who prefer to think in Spanish will reflect on Dr. Paul's comments and become ardent supporters.
A kneejerk booing here and there really helps his campaign.
Hope for America = Esperanza de América

Boy, Howdy (that means I agree)
I thought it was great
Let those others split the hate-vote! Anyone who listens carefully can't help but see the truth. Boos just show that he isn't afraid to say the truth.

Ron Paul needs internet support on the Univision forums
My written Spanish is deplorable, so I cannot defend our favorite candidate to the best of my ability. I know two or three DP posters are doing their best to keep a positive light on Dr. Paul in the wake of last nights debate. If you have a few moments, and you are proficient in Spanish and debate, or just expressing yourself well in Spanish, please take the time to help the hispanic fence-straddlers learn the truth about Ron Paul.

The Univision website for the 2008 Elections is starting to publish articles about last nights debate. They are not painting Dr. Paul in a good light at all. They are exaggerating the amount of boos he received and neglect to mention the applause and cheers he received immediately after explaining his stance. Another article discusses expenditures on advertising and campaign coffers. They don't even mention Dr. Paul at all in that article. This, despite the fact the Univision had a story on Dr. Paul's finances as recently as 4 December: (http://www.univision.com/content/content.jhtml?cid=1368102 )
(Use the Google website translator found here: http://www.google.com/language_tools)
We should not be surprised at these tactics. We still have time to keep Univision from re-writing recent history (like, what happened yesterday). Dr. Paul had enormous support showing all around Coral Gables, from what I was able to gather. This fact should be brought to the attention of the readers of Univision. A small flurry of activity today and tonight could make a HUGE difference.

She called him Congressman Juan Paulo
And then winked. Does that mean she thinks Ron Paul should be beatified? Excellent linkage to JPII!
As usual...
Ron Paul owned!! Love the standing ovation at the end! He doesn't back down because of the boos. Given enough time, he explains his position, which has not changed. People respect him just for his honesty and consistency, if nothing else.
Ron Paul 2008!
