From the CEO of MEETUP.COM, Introducing Meetup Alliance

0 votes

Meetup Alliance is a free platform that helps local real-world groups team up to share ideas, coordinate efforts and make good things happen.

Great groups form great Alliances. Learn how Meetup.com can also help you start a great local group.

This is how to get all the RP Meetup Groups joined together in one place on one common ground.

Here is the video of the CEO talking about it http://youtube.com/watch?v=EIf0GxuWt7k

Now we can have all the Social Meeting Groups working together. This site can include Facebook, MySpace, Meetup, Google and Yahoo groups.

centralized meet-up

I want to congratulate Daily Paul for creating a market place of ideas surrounding the idea of electing Ron Paul. The concept has been been chosen by the market as a winner. (A big winner).

If dailypaul.com becomes a long term success, then we win. Never stop adding input. I love it, I am addicted to it, and talk radio will take a hit if I am an example of a substantial demographic.

God Bless and God speed.

p.s. be leary of centralizing our grassroots efforts. For the same reason we are all here. We all know why and we had a "?" in our brain as to why it is needed. From my perspective it seems to have already happened naturally. The winners of ideas in the other forums seem to make it here already, naturally.

Dugg and Stumbled good work

Dugg and Stumbled good work everyone

2nd Largest!

The Ron Paul 2008 Alliance is already the 2nd Largest Alliance in the world (2nd to a Moms Alliance)!

A true vote accounting system?

How to communicate to all web and non-web users to record their vote for Ron Paul on an online site accounting system, state by state, county by county? A virtual watchdog for Diebold election fraud. Sooner or later, this will have to become a top priority. But first, of course, getting RP election delegates stealthy into the system !

This is Great for national Coordinating...

...but how bout for just local coordination? I mean, How do we start a local Alliance group such as just for my state in Indiana? How does one begin to start there own alliance group? And.... Who is the organizer for this alliance?... anybody having trouble needs to click on join the alliance tab sorta near the top next to the map, I had no problems and my group was joined in a matter of minutes, The Region/NW Indiana Group... you need to be the organizer of your group if I understand correctly? Then the Organizer of the alliance reviews your application and then accepts or denies it?

I think you have to BEG...

And for the time being, I can't really see that this will be of much use anyway -- there are virtually no "features" nor any "functionality" to the site.

I had previously held high hopes that we might be able to use the "whatever it was" they had brewing in the manner you are suggesting -- as some type of "hierarchical" structure where we could interlink a state-wide collection of meetups, and then perhaps above that a regional collection, and on to the national collection.

As it is, there doesn't seem to be anything like that here. Maybe it will develop over time, but sadly probably not soon enough to be of any use.

I don't agree. Right now I

I don't agree. Right now I am getting RSS feeds on updates to the Alliance. I think that this will become an effective tool to have in our bag in a short time. Right now the admin of the group is updating the site and will begin to put the pieces together. I probably wont happen today but, I am sure we can use this for the primaries.

I would concur... This could

I would concur... This could be a fruitful tool if used properly for national coordination, however, hearing someone was able to join w/o being an actual organizer of a group does seem troubling, not saying you have any malice intent, but for functionality purposes, it would seem that organizers or asst. organizers should be the ones joining as they will be the ones on the mailing list.

You see, the biggest problem we have had for nationally coordinated efforts has been in our communication between groups. Sure we have had good success but it could be better and something like this helps in those efforts.

This is a work in progress but i am optimistic at the out come for if this is to be a revolution of sorts... national and local coordination efforts will have to improve. After all, the Revolution cannot just stop with one election... we'll need many elections across local, state and federal races to have the impact that we desire... this is a great next step towards that goal.

We have a statewide meta-Meetup for Orgs and Asst Orgs

...and we have been doing a weekly conference call (via a service one of our other organizers found called freeconferencecall.com) and it has helped in many ways.

Through the conference call, we've even been able to assist in getting stuff done OUTSIDE of our state (Just as one small example, the "Something Big" ad that was chosen by the RP Campaign for the YouTube debates -- that was done by one of our "meta-group" members, with assistance from other members! )

It would still be nice to have some method of auto-magically "combining" our groups calendars (especially as we add more groups and more events related to the GOP and stuff the nearer the primaries come).

But it IS possible to get at least rudimentary coordination between the groups in our state (which is also REALLY necessary since we have no official "state coordinator" or anything).

Hope you're right... Maybe I'm just not seeing it yet.

I *did* sign up our local group today (right after seeing this post).

And I *do* want to have something in place that CAN help coordinate our state's efforts (we already have a statewide "meta-Meetup" that is being used -- as much as we CAN -- to try to coordinate our local groups) -- so I am very OPEN to the idea and possibility of getting a tool that will fit that bill.

But just having a single "national" alliance -- while it may have benefits -- just won't be sufficient.

Than again, I've only had the opportunity to read through the FAQ once so far, and maybe I'm just not seeing some functionality that is already there -- or perhaps it will appear in the next day or two (which seems an odd way to deploy a site from a web-developer standpoint -- either you have fully-tested features ready to deploy or you don't; phase 2 normally takes at least another 30 to 60 days, and often more like 90 to 180 days).

So for now, put me in the "optimistic, but skeptical" category.

Rightfully so. We'll give it

Rightfully so. We'll give it some time. For now it is just great to be able to get messages to all the meetup groups collective. That one aspect makes us that much more efficient.

Thats not completely true, I

Thats not completely true, I am just a member of the Fargo group not an organizer or admin and I was able to add our group to the Alliance without a problem. If you want to start a state group you have to request it. Right now groups are by invite. Here is the link https://secure.meetupalliance.com/create

Underlying mechanism seems slow...

Joined with my group, got the comfirmation email... clicked and got the success, but 1/2 hour later and our group STILL doesn't register as in existence yet on the "Live Directory" (which therefore must actually be a "Time-Delayed Directory").

And generally, as a 1.0 version of this, I don't hold out high hopes that this will be anything like a useful tool until mid-2008 (or perhaps later). After all, meetup.com was in existence and "heavily used" by the Dean campaign in the 2004 cycle, but it was pale shadow in comparison to what exists for capabilities of today's Meetup.com (which is an almost entirely different service).

And reading through the FAQ's, I'm not yet convinced that there is really anything present for features or functionality that we can really make use of.

Sad, because when I saw the YouTube a few weeks back, I *was* excited; because one of the "hats" that I wear is running a "meta-Meetup" that we have setup to coordinate all of the local meetups in our State. That has worked fairly well for what it is, but it's rather cumbersome and could really just use some of the "simplest" features to make it better (like being able to "integrate" the calendars of the various "sub" meetups into one big meta-meetup-calendar -- which currently has to be done via manual cross-posting of events.)

But instead of giving us a "meta-level" tool to use WITHIN meetup, they've constructed a separate monstrosity... but haven't (at least that I have seen so far) added any features that can actually be USED.

So while I'm cautiously optimistic that EVENTUALLY they will get it "right" -- knowing software development and the project version timelines, it'll probably be well after the primaries and maybe even after the final election next year before this becomes the tool we REALLY need right now.

Oh well.

I was reading the FAQ's and

I was reading the FAQ's and saw this:

What is preview mode?

Because we are still ironing out kinks in the registration process, Alliances can only be created by invitation at the moment. We're starting with about 50 Charter Alliances. Early next year we'll launch to the public.

We are one of the "chosen" ones :-)

Up to 8 groups

This is fantastic! I am really excited!

Time to get to work now. ;)

Time to get to work now. ;)

This is HUGE!

The CEO of Meetup.com was saying earlier that this WILL AFFECT the outcome of the Presidential Election! This is a historical day on the internet. This new branch of Meetup gives tremendous power to small groups of people through communication and networking capabilities! I can't wait to see how this affects things in the political sphere :D

Not just Meetups but

Not just Meetups but Facebook, MySpace, Google and Yahoo groups as well.

anybody else getting no confirmation email from MeetupAlliance?

I can't seem to get their emails to confirm my application for an account there (tried twice). Am I the only one?

Did you get it yet, it took

Did you get it yet, it took me about 10 mins

no, meetupalliance is not playing nice with me at all

I don't know what is going on. Seems like all brick walls for me so far, sometimes after initially looking like a clear path. I'm having one of those "I hate computers today" experiences with this; I was so primed to be one of the very first people to jump into this thing, but it's just not being cooperative at all.

Everything seems normal on my computer and network right now, other than this, so whatever the problem is, it appears (to me) to be related to MUA or else just my own unfamiliarity with whatever it is that it's trying to do. Just now I somehow was prompted to do something which ended up trying to do something RSS-related; I don't use RSS at all and don't know what it was doing.

Did I mention I hate computers today? :-P

BTW, I was a systems administrator in a past life, so it's not like I can't find the "any" key. But I've emailed support@meetupalliance.com so I'll see what they come up with. It's probably something simple. Usually is. ;-/
