Nebraska Legislature Constitutional Amendment, LR 289CA

I am very encouraged by what happened today in our Nebraska Legislature. State Senator Beau McCoy of Omaha introduced a Constitutional Amendment, LR 289CA, which will ‘protect the freedoms of Nebraskans to choose their own health care options’ without fear of government reprisal. Sen. McCoy’s legislation would enshrine in our state constitution the fundamental principle that Nebraskans cannot be forced by government to pay for our citizenship.

AFP-Nebraska supports Sen. McCoy’s Constitutional Amendment because we know the policy of government regulated health care is a failure. Look to the state of Massachusetts where the government mandated all residents purchase state-approved health care policies. The results: a 14% increase in health care costs due to government regulations, a $2.1 billion dollar program with higher taxes to pay for it, longer waiting lines for specialists and a greater burden on hard-working families who were forced to pay premiums that are twice as high as the national average.

The fight to prevent a government-run health care bill from passing the United States Congress has been long and very difficult. Like you, I am frustrated with Sen. Ben Nelson’s vote to advance a deeply troubled health care bill and the politics-as-usual backroom deals that made it happen. But, we cannot become discouraged or give up the fight for our freedoms and free-market principles!
