Iowa Caucuses this Saturday! - (A letter to Latter Day Saints)

An email I have sent to the members of my ward:

Brothers and Sisters,

We have been commanded to support and sustain the Constitution of the United States of America as a God-inspired and sacred document.
We have also been admonished to seek out good people to lead our government, all of whom will take an oath to defend that Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. All those who have served in our military have taken a similar oath.

"But we honor more than those who brought forth the Constitution. I reverence the Constitution of the United States as a sacred document." Ezra Taft Benson

The Constitution under which we live, and which has not only blessed us but has become a model for other constitutions, is our God-inspired national safeguard ensuring freedom and liberty, justice and equality before the law. Gordon B. Hinckley

The Constitution of the United States has served as a model for many nations and is the oldest constitution in use today. “I established the Constitution of this land,” said the Lord, “by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose” (D&C 101:80). Our Divine Constitution Ezra Taft Benson

We must not assume that since the Constitution embodies a “divinely inspired” political system the machinery of checks and balances, separation of powers, and other constitutional limitations will automatically preserve political and moral freedom for the individual. In such circumstances, it might be wise to remind ourselves that no constitution or set of protective laws is self-executing. Beyond Voting: Some Duties of the LDS Citizen Cheryll Lynn May Ensign, June 1976.

Have mercy, O Lord, upon all the nations of the earth; have mercy upon the rulers of our land; may those principles, which were so honorably and nobly defended, namely, the Constitution of our land, by our fathers, be established forever. D&C 109:54.

10 Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil. D&C 98.

How many of us truly believe that we can fulfill our sacred duty to seek diligently for good and honest leaders by waiting until November and voting for the "lesser of two evils"?

How long would our Church survive if we only attended meetings, fulfilled our callings, or sustained our leaders once every other year?

This Saturday afternoon, 1/23/10 at 1:00 PM, the political parties of Iowa will be holding their caucuses.

I believe it is our SACRED duty to attend and make our voices heard.

I know that some of you will honestly be unable to participate because you will be working to support yourselves or your families.
Satan has already made it difficult to martial the forces against him by undermining the economy and sapping working Americans of the wealth and time we need to organize politically. This is part of his strategy.

But for those of you that have simply become disgusted with "politics" or despaired of ever making a difference, I would only say that discouragement is a luxury we can NOT afford.

We can no more excuse ourselves from the obligation to preserve the Constitution than we can justify surrendering to Satan because he has gained so much power in the world.

Indeed, I believe the battle is all one, and if we retreat on this front, the rest of our efforts will be in vain.

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing."

Well put

I'm pretty sure you can't use the church directory to send emails like this of a political nature but it was pretty neutral so hopefully no one makes a stink about it. It is important and something more Lds members need to be reminded of. We all have a duty and responsibility to uphold the constitution and seek out and elect good, wise and honest leaders, but the lds are commanded to on top of that. What comes of less is evil, and as is often stated on here DP "the lesser of two evils is still evil". One day I Believe we will be held accountable for these decisions we make and their subsequent consequences and on the day of judgement, when it comes up, I look forward to saying things like, "not my fault, I voted for Ron Paul":D

hopefully Iowan members don't take it as a call to support Romney.ughh
Thanks for the email though, I will send it to my friends as well.

You're right about the church directory...

The email addresses were from my own personal contact list. (And I have gotten non-church emails from most of them at different times.)
The church itself (correctly)is non-partisan.
Church members cannot and should not be apolitical.
