NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A popular bookstore and cafe near Yale University wants its many Hispanic employees to speak only English around customers, sparking controversy in immigrant-friendly New Haven, where students fight for immigrant rights.
Atticus Bookstore and Cafe recently issued a policy stating that English should be the only language spoken on the floor and behind the counter. "Spanish is allowed in the prep area, the dishwasher area and the lower level. Let's make our customers feel welcome and comfortable," the policy states, according to New Haven Workers Association, a group of activists who said employees gave them a copy.

Speaking English in front of the Customers is a no Brainer
Now if they wish to speak their native language away from the main customer areas - so what but they better be speaking English out front & it's up to management to make sure that they do - Not speaking English is going to cost the owner his business
"If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!"
See the poll on ther clip ?
The Majority said they should speak english on the job.
Enter a country, buy local language CD, and in two weeks
You can ask where the bath room is located. The phrase "I want" is handy too.
When I travel foreign, it's exciting to learn the language. Racism is big within the Obama minions.
Ignorant.
And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”
"When in Rome, do as the
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do", and you can quote me on that.
If you want to work in this country and your job involves dealing with the public, you need to speak the common language. If I get a job dealing with the public in Mexico, I don't think that my employer will allow me to speak English.
This is really all part of the effort to erase national borders. I'm sure you've all heard of the New World Order.
Even if this entire continent
Even if this entire continent were a single country, it's still only proper to speak in the local language in front of customers.
when the customers start to
when the customers start to go somewhere else, because they feel uncomfortable the owner will have to lay them off.
Sooner or later.
He better does it sooner and get some other employees.
Who owns the store?
The fact that hispanic employees object to having to speak or learn English to work behind the counter or when dealing with customers in Atticus bookstore surely need to find work elsewhere. Trampling on the rights of the store owner to magnify a personal language preference is just plain bullying. Choosing not to shop there is one thing but to deliberately try to disrupt this man's business is tantamount to coercion. I sincerely hope he does not succumb to these tactics.
Well, when
you go to other countries, you either learn the language or you have a rough time. I get tired of this politically correct BS, in all honesty. The article state that when serving the public these employees must speak English...they can speak other languages at their work stations...how much more fair does it have to get?
