END to International Trade?

Was just talking about this possibility with my mother. There might be an obvious refutal of this.

Couldn't we just end international trade on everything except the most important things like oil, steel, etc. Things everybody really needs. Like that wouldn't every nation just develop with what it has provide industry and jobs for everybody because it makes everything at home, and doesn't lose out to big sharks.

Governments wouldn't have much to do with one another except oil. Which probably many countries would be working to find alternatives (with much more focus).

I know this would be against the ideas of a freemarket, but who says there should be a global freemarket when we dont have equal conditions in the world. That is the basis of a freemarket. Equal opportunity and sound rules right? We don't have that internationally.. so maybe we shouldn't have international trade.
