Obama wants to freeze discretionary spending for 3 years
Posted: January 25th, 2010 07:55 PM ET

Washington (CNN) - In a move that could help position him in the political center by sharpening his credentials on fiscal discipline, President Obama will announce in Wednesday's State of Union address that he's proposing to save $250 billion by freezing all non-security federal discretionary spending for three years, according to two senior administration officials.

The senior officials said the budgets of the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs along with some international programs would be exempt from the spending freeze. "We are at war, and we're going to make sure our troops are funded adequately," said one of the senior officials.

The officials would not reveal the details of which specific domestic programs would be cut as they prepare to face major pushback from liberals in the president's own party because popular education and health spending could be on the chopping block. The details will be officially unveiled next Monday, when the president publicly releases his next budget blueprint for fiscal year 2011 (which starts October 1) and beyond.

"We've got to make some tough decisions," said the second senior official. "Everybody is not going to get what they want."

This may implode what's left of the Dems.

The Democrat's Circular Firing Squad Set To Go Into Hyper-Mode After News Of Obama's Spending Freeze
Joe Weisenthal | Jan. 25, 2010, 8:49 PM

Did Obama just seal the Democratic party's fate in November by leaking word of a coming 3-year discretionary spending freeze?

Let's quickly point out why this already sounds like a political blunder:

* It won't do jack to control the budget. It only affects 17% of the budget, and that 17% isn't the part that's growing like crazy.
* It won't do anything to make conservatives like him.
* It will piss off liberals -- royally.

And indeed that last one is already happening.

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reports that labor and other liberal special interest groups are venting fury at The White House this evening.

I have a distinct feeling Wednesday is going to be bad for Obama

I've heard a lot of the items they say he's going to bring up and I honestly think people are going to see right through it. I think he's going to lose a lot of fans Wednesday night. Or at least not gain any.

wow! (in lower case)...

save 250 billion, spend 20 trillion...at least he's saving pennies!

So, we'll fund the empire and starve the peasants...

When will history change?

Thomas Paine told us that we could remake the world. Is 'The Crisis' any less meaningful yesterday than today? Where is our 'Common Sense'?

We are promised a stipend for the riches of our Liberty and expected to smile and applaud as our freedom is run out the door. We are promised that "discretionary spending", the "pocket change" of our government, will be saved. So I ask, how long could you survive on your piggy bank? Why should such an empty promise slake our cries for revocation? Should we lose our cause over a trinket?

These assholes will find some of us no so willing to settle for thin soup and sawdust. I wait for the day their magic fails to hypnotize.

domestic spending, So he still going to spend money on

the US's Empire around the world.

The President had no choice.

The President had no choice. This was bound to happen sooner or later. The spending freeze is being spun in a way to make it look like the President is doing a good thing by choice.

If health care spending is frozen, that is called: RATIONING!

The baby-boomers are retiring now. How will spending remain frozen for 3 years with the large number of retirees that are expected to enter the Medicare system during this time and beyond?

Death panels cometh if this is for real.

Of course the scope and reach

Of course the scope and reach of goverment is still far too great. I think we all know that government never self-regulates. Services and the number of gov't employees must all be slashed. Obama may yet do the right thing by ticking off everyone and finally making some hard decisions that will ensure he's a one term president, but he may set America on a different path. The powers that be will fight tooth and nail for their interests first, so I have grave doubts any person in any party can make a difference, including Ron Paul. Government is all compromise and favor trading... just the hard facts of life.

You are so right.

The Dept. of Labor?
The Dept. of Education?
The Dept. of Energy?

There are 3 Depts. right off the bat that should be phased out in say over 3 years time.

This will not ever be consider.
As you said, the government doesn't like to self-regulate.....unless it is forced to.
