Has unity died? Why all the arguments all the sudden?Submitted by Oyate on Sun, 01/31/2010 - 03:51
Questions like this are pouring from our neophytes. I must admit to a high degree of empathy. To a person initiated in the high point of "Hope For America" with all it's love, warmth and spontaneous enthusiasm, this must seem like a true low.
I think all of us will look back on those days, which for us is barely yesterday, with deep fondness. We had our Summer Of Love (or 3VOl) and it lasted for like 3 years. Not a bad honeymoon. But in some ways we're back to the workaday business of activism.
Kittens, movements go through highs and lows. Movements go through infancy and adolescence and into maturity and sometimes they recurse and go through the loop again. The truth is it's not always a cake walk. The truth is that since the early 1970s when the "libertarian party" was formed, many great people have risen, got into disputes, worked their asses off and were rewarded with bupkiss and went down in a cloud of dust.
Frankly, before you New R3VOlUTIONARIES, we didn't really accomplish much of anything. 30 years and millions of dollars of returning to try again in the face of failure. Man if you really want to know what failure is like, ask an old libertarian. And jaded? Honey, a hard boiled egg is a hard boiled egg but we've been boiling for 3 decades (now that's a hard boiled egg).
And I'm one that's been foementing this little process which I'd like to call factionalization. And I don't think it's a bad thing, I think it's going to be a good thing or I wouldn't have been doing what I've been doing for the past few months.
See, much as we'd all like to get hotel rooms, the GOP was never a big enough tent to fit the whole movement into. I know this still smacks of heresy but it's the fact on the ground now. We're too ideologically broad. Now given as our GOP factions are dedicated and getting results, who can or wants to tell them to stop? Not me. But "the rest of us" are gonna have to move on and find different expressions. The world is still waiting for alternatives.
However, I bring reassuring news. Unlike pretty much every movement before us as it schisms, we're nationalized as a movement and we're networked like no other movement before. We have hisotry, we have bonds of trust and experience forged though labouring against impossible odds. We may be factionalizing but we're not falling apart. We're reorganizing.
"All politics is local" is an Arizona mantra (we have many). That happens to be one I don't agree with. "All politics is collective" is one of my way less popular mantras. "All politics is voluntary association" is how to sell the same to the freedom crowd.
Each one of us needs to find a group or structure through which we can express our ideals. Clearly now there is an element among us that finds war acceptable. Actually we have our elements that kind of digs on war. We have people who have done war and people who do war and yet more people who teach people how to do war. We in fact have professional soldiers among us. Always have.
Now kittens, here is what we do:
We let them. We shouldn't try to change them. The rest of us need to move on. To some it will seem like a mass defection. To some it will feel like being driven from your homeland. Old friendships will be tested but these will turn into new alliances.
Would you trust a naked old indian shivering in a thin blanket? OK how about you just trust Oyate. Trust me kittens, everything is going to work out fine. All you have to do is keep what makes you a committed activist firmly in mind and you will end up in the right place. For those of us who like being noplace in particular or everyplace at once, the menu just multiplied in size.
Something wonderful is about to happen kittens! We've always had it, but a side-benefit of this is the nation is about to see that Freedom comes in every flavour, in every colour and shape and size. Americans love shopping and Americans love choices when they shop. Good thing freedom isn't monolithic. When we display choices and if we're lucky enough to have the MSM and Dem strategists assist in "fragmenting" us, we'll have an opportunity to display this to the nation.
As of this moment, our rap would sound pretty good on air. "I'm from this aspect of the freedom movement". I'm from that faction of the freedom movement". People will sit up and say wow, there's different brands?
The day GWB said "I'm a big government conservative" I was in a room full of activists and we were hooping and hollering and high-fiving because we had it nailed and he nailed it for us. Bingo. I still have one of the BIG GOVERNMENT CONSERVATIVE t-shirts around here somewhere. That was a hoot. Practice in the generation of cognitive dissonance. That was back when we had to rely on stunts and street theatre to get any attention. Without getting killed that is. Dunno if you youngers noticed but being antiwar was not exactly popular post-9/11.
Anyways, forgive old Oyate for rambling and if you don't, I'll stand and drop this thin blanket my naked body is shivering under and trust me kittens, nobody wants that. God doesn't want that for you sweetheart. So when I tell you to be not afraid and to walk without fear and with a light heart, you just nod your head to old Oyate and repeat what I say.
Kittens, be not afraid, walk without fear and with a light heart.
