Has Ron Paul missed this many votes in congress?

Someone in another forum is riding Ron Paul for missing a bunch of votes, going back to the 90s.

Here's his quote:

290 is not "several" missed votes! He hasn't missed "only several" since 98!

3 in 97, 8 in 98, 13 in 99, 40 in 2000, 31 in 01, 16 in 02, 53 in 03, 75 in 04, 36 in 05, and 48 in 06!

You call that a "stellar" voting record?

Here's the link:

But anyhow, I realize Dr. Paul has missed many votes recenty due to campaigning, but before I say anything in response to this person, I just wanted to see if any of you knew if it's true he missed this many votes, and why?

Keep in Mind this about RP

He actually reads what he votes for!

He may have missed a vote or two, but the idea is to vote based on what matters --not silly things as giving medals.

It's called science.

Last time I checked, the same matter (Dr. Paul, in this case) can't be in more than a single place at the same time. He can't be both in D.C. and on the campaign trail at the same time.

Furthermore, his responsibility at this time as a Congressman is to the people of his district. Has anybody bothered to ask them how they feel about him missing votes to campaign? I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of them would rather see him miss votes in this session and win the Presidency. But that's just my opinion.

As for those who said kill this thread...why? Those are the facts. Dr. Paul would not approve of sweeping facts under the rug. There's no hiding of the truth or spin required. The simple truth will do.

Even more attacks from my home town paper bloggers on RP:

It continues, folks.

Me and several others are having to give them an education on the Constitution as a result.

We can turn these attacks into positives because most will view their logic as severely flawed and also as an act of desperation.

Folks, they are diggin' up the so-called "dirt". And I agree, we NEED to have strategies to combat these accusations. We must hit them head on or else other people reading their remarks will believe them to be true.

Why vote on a bill you haven't finished reading?

I bet Dr. Paul is one of the few people on Capitol Hill that actually bothers to read the language of the bills he votes on. And reading takes time.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason for him missing some votes. He was probably just too busy trying to inform himself about what he would actually be voting on.

But to be fair, I haven't researched the issue enough to know whether that was the case.

This is true. I talked to

This is true. I talked to Thelma Drake on Saturday (2nd District Congresswoman from Virginia) and she said there a lot of bills people try to push through at the very last moment. They won't even have 24 hours to look over the bills they are supposed to vote on. Ron Paul more than likely just doesn't vote than to give a good proposal a no vote or vice versa.

Ron Paul is my hero :)

Missed votes

Take a look at some of the other candidates records and it may give you a clearer picture.

Not Voting not always missed

This is solely based upon "Not Voting" record.
Someone can be there and still not vote.
Personally I see Paul as a kind of guy who would frequently choose not to vote if he agreed with a bill but didn't think it should be law.

That's actually not a bad

That's actually not a bad record compared to some I've seen. Mountain out of a anthill.

Maybe more relevant would be prior years

I don't think it's hard to understand that, if you're campaigning for president, you're gonna miss a lot of votes.

But if you miss on other years, when you're not running, that's a different issue. Then you may just be a slacker.

As far as I can tell from the data (you can just put in the Congress number, 109, 108, 107, etc. Ron Paul is fine - he's in the middle of the pack, other than this year, in which he's been out campaigning.

Here are the numbers:

Congress Yrs. % votes missed
------------------------------------------------------------
110th 2007-2008 25.6%
109th 2005-2006 6.9%
108th 2003-2004 10.6%
107th 2001-2002 4.7%
106th 1999-2000 4.4%
105th 1997-1998 0.9%

Who Cares!

I'd like to see the entire congress miss 3/4 of their votes! This is all they got? ROTFLMAO!

His record is stellar it's not how many times you vote it's how you vote and what you vote on that counts, and if it matches your rhetoric. Does the record match the rhetoric! When that question is asked one man stands alone Dr. Paul!

Kill this post now!

Kill this post now!

What are you talking about, "kill this post now"?

I understand that you may think that thiis is just more potentially bad news for Ron Paul that bloggers can use as ammo, but apparently, they already are.

The reason I bring this to everyone's attention is to head it off at the pass with intelligent answers being brainstormed by our brilliant contributors.

Sometimes we have to roll in the dirt with these charlatans in order to defeat them.

I know postings are dry and we can't get the full inflection of the individuals from these posts, so don't interpret this as me jumping down your throat.

We all want Dr. Paul elected, but there's gonna be thousands of different opinions on how it should be done or what should or shouldn't be said.

Killing this post is not going to stop these ridiculously childish and vacuous attacks on the Good Doctor. If you all think you've seen some bad attacks so far....HA.....just wait.

Why?

Why?

Go to the Source himself.

I mean, contact his office in washington and ask for.... 1 ) factual clarification and 2) reasons why ....

Then get back with us here on Daily Paul, then get our views and then post up a reply.

This will become our standard reply for us all when you are done.

Thanks, good work,

Well, he's 10th worst out of 435 representatives.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/house/vote-m...

He missed 290/1120 total votes, or 25.6%. Only 9 House members missed more in the current (110th) Congress.

Dem's the faks.

So those of you who are complaining that "oh, Dr. Paul isn't spending enough time in New Hampshire". Maybe this is part of the reason. It's tough to be in Congress and also run for President at the same time.

Tancredo missed 28.4% (8th worst)
Kucinich missed 11.8% (somewhere more in the middle).

On the other hand, if you look at the Senators, McCain, Dodd, Biden, Obama, and Clinton, are all worse or in the same range, and are all among the very worst vote missers.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/senate/vote-...

That's the 110th Congress.

Last year, when Paul was not campaigning, (109th Congress) he only missed 7% of the votes.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/109/house/vote-m...

compare him to obama or

compare him to obama or mccain and you'll get a laugh. from what I hear, they've both missed half their votes. (all hearsay I have no source)

McCain missed 54%, Obama missed 34%. for the 110th Congress.

We need to checkmate this type of smear.

I will try to find out what votes he missed, as some have pointed out, it could be a trivial or bad issue. But I know from confronting my own Rep. Brad Miller, D-NC, that many of thses guys vote on bills that they have not read and have no idea what is in them!! Now, what is worse, not voting, or voting on something you have no knowledge of??

Thats the wrong track

Due to the damage that congress do to us every time they vote. The only yes vote that I would like to see is for congress going on vacation the first day of congress and then another vote at the end of the congressional season. They should be on permanent vacation ALWAYS. I would actually like to see them raised their salary if they go on vacation for 95 percent of the time. Get a second job on their districts. Go chit chat with their friends at starbuck. That way they can do the least amount of damage. And the president should be growing roses in the White House and called to work when there is an emergency to take care off. I wonder if that would ever happen. hahaha!

No big deal

Keep in mind that an awful lot of votes in Congress are for trivia -- stuff like naming the third week of May National Sunflower Week (I just made that up -- you get the idea). So simply counting how many votes a politician misses is pretty meaningless.

Is it possible...

...to have a perfect attendance for voting? Cubin, a WYO R congresscritter, catches a lot of flack for missing around half of the votes. I'm sure that 3-4 dozen/year is no where near half. Where on a list would RP place is probably a good thing to research.

Link to "Missers"

Go here and click on missers for both House and Senate, McCain's up near the very top, along with Dodd, Biden, Obama, Hillary, etc...
He can't be attacked for missed votes, unless you want to attack all the candidates.
And because Paul is most likely to be the sole "No," the only reason for him to show up is symbolic in many cases anyways.

NICE!

And there it is, the top four all republican, and ol' Cubin number three! hahaha

The REAL question should be...

...why in the world is Congress having so many votes in the first place?

600-700 per year? C'mon!

That's probably 599-699 too many bills trying to take away our freedoms or spend us into oblivion.

Perspective, people.

Let's Reign! (Rev. 5:10)
Valrico (Hillsborough County), Florida

Yep

y'know what bugs me?

it's the "media", or wahtever, judging a congressperson by the number of bills introduced and/or voted for.

That the larger the number the greater their "effectiveness"

WTF?, sorry but haven't we enough laws, already?

I don't want "EFFECTIVENESS", I just want them to leave me the #&$% alone!!!!

What a waste of time.

That is absolutely right! You beat me to it. Most of the stuff they vote on is either asinine and inconsequential, or it serves to further restrict our freedoms or spend the stolen money. Congressman Paul is a hero, and President Paul is our greatest hope for freedom!

5% of people make things happen
10% of people watch things happen
85% say "What happened?"

Compare and you will see he is near the top

Compare his voting records to others and you will see he is near the top on attendance.
