Tragedy & Hope & Progress & Poverty
Two classics -- one by an insider elitist, one by an outsider populist:
Tragedy and Hope:A History of the World in Our Time
Carroll Quigley. I am slowly working my way through this tome. Years ago I read "The Naked Capitalist," which quotes heavily from and summarizes this book.
Progress and Poverty: An Inquiry into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want with Increase of Wealth: The Remedy" -- Henry George. (That's the classic condensed version; here for the modern condensed version.)
"Why in a land so bountifully blest, with enough and more than enough for all, should there be such inequality of conditions? Such heaped wealth interlocked with such deep and debasing want? Why, amid such super-abundance, should strong men vainly look for work? Why should women faint with hunger, and little children spend the morning of life in the treadmill of toil?" Henry George answers those questions -- and by the way, since globalism has exported that reality to the Third World, George's observations and remedies apply to the developing nations especially, but also to our own.

because some are willing to
because some are willing to sacrifice and work for what they want, while others want to be taken care of.. When the government got into the welfare business it screwed everything up. I have seen people on here talk about wealth resitibution. that is classic socialism and BULL!
