Advice / help needed, Please Read.

Hello, some of you have seen me around, etc. But I want to get directly to my question...I am a voting member of my county's Republican Committee, and recently I have been forwarded an email announcement by someone who's a "Reagan conservative" that's planning to run against Rick Boucher for his Congressional seat.

I am thinking of sending him an email with some questions about his stances on the issues. Can anyone here contribute to this? Note that this is on a state level (Virginia), and as such some of the more national matters don't hold as much weight.

Any help that I could have would be appreciated, but if not, that's fine too

Thanks,
John

definitely find a way to ask

definitely find a way to ask him about the wars. Consider that he might run for national office in the future.

Ventura 2012

While it is important to ask him questions concerning your

district,

He IS running for Congress. That is a national level office that deals with national level issues.

He needs to answer questions about such issues.

#1 in my book would be his views and his level of understanding about the Federal Reserve and fiat currency.
(that will speak volumes about his general outlook)

#2 would be his view about the role the Declaration of Independence and Constitution play in defining powers and authorities of the government and the office he seeks.

#3 would be his view of the proper role of government

#4 would be his view on the size of Congressional districts, Congressional pay COLA's, and directly elected Senators.

#5 would be his view on how the House conducts its business with "party bosses" having control over the legislative process rather than the membership at large.(committee assignments, chairs, when bills are scheduled for votes, etc.)

#5b would be his view concerning the Congress ignoring the requirement that a bill be read in its entirety once with a 24 wait for debate, a second time with a 7 day wait for debate, and then a 3rd time before a debate begins. (Congress currently routinely 'waives' the reading of bills which is why they don't know what is in them and how they can get to be hundreds and thousands of pages long)

Those would be a good start, and except for the first one are not issue specific, but rather more about his understanding of the role of government and how it is supposed to work.

If he can't pass that smell test, then any other responses really aren't going to matter.

Also, he will be used to "issue" surveys from other groups. He will be expecting them and have crafted responses to them. He will not be expecting such basic and fundamental questions. At the least, it may spur him to investigate and or think about his answers and that alone might lead him where you want.

However, why would he reply to your survey? Do you represent an interest group officially?

Its more along the lines of..

..a voting member of a county Republican committee wanting to find out more about him and where he stands on important issues. Sounds plausible at least to me.

John, I'd say use the C4L

John,

I'd say use the C4L survey questions

http://www.campaignforliberty.com/candidatesurvey.php?state=CO

Choose the most relevant ones & modify them to suit your needs. Of primary importance to me would be monetary policy and foreign policy. See if he understands the connection, and if not, educate him.

The topics of those questions are good, but they are worded

poorly. They "push" the survey taker towards the "yes" answer that is desired. They at least indicate what the desired answer is and so that makes it easier for someone to answer yes and get C4L support. The questions should be more open ended and not leading in their wording towards a certain answer.

Also, one important question that comes to mind:

What is your stance on the bailouts that have occurred? Because Boucher voted for the bailouts I do believe...a lot of good that did anyone.

The questionaire is a great idea.

Maybe you could gently position the questions to assess his attitudes toward fiscal sanity and individual rights; maybe states rights too. Perhaps check out Rand Paul's platform for ideas?

Thanks Reedr,

Here's my state's Republican Creed that this candidate has said he fully supports. Does it match up? See for yourself.

1. That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justice

2. That all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society

3. That fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraints must be exercised at all levels of government

4. That the Federal Government must preserve individual liberty by observing constitutional limitations

5. That peace is best preserved through a strong national defense

6. That faith in God, as recognized by our Founding Fathers, is essential to the moral fiber of the Nation.

Tell him

"Goldwater Conservative" sounds so much more sexy.

I'll think about it. - Bump

This could be a potential liberty candidate if his answers are right but we need the right questions to ask! :)
