Is US bullying Toyota on recall?

CHICAGO — The US transportation chief's public rebukes of Toyota's handling of a massive safety recall have raised eyebrows, given the US government's major stake in rivals General Motors and Chrysler.

"The optics are terrible because -- and this is what happens when a government owns a company - the two companies that are going to gain the most out of this are General Motors and Chrysler," said Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland's business school

and here is my gut feeling last week:

The U.S. government owns

The U.S. government owns something to the tune of 60% or so of GM ("Government Motors"). Not that the Constitution authorizes the government to have ownership in companies, but that's another separate issue...

IMO, GM is desperate. Very desperate. When have you ever seen a company use the fact that they pay their debts (the recent gov loan payoff commercials) for marketing purposes? My first reaction to watching that commercial last week was "whoopdeedoo... GM paid some bills."

I believe GM is in an extremely bad position and their recent action, IMO, indicates that things are about to get very shaky for them again.

The commercials were not intended to simply inform Americans that GM is paying us back the money that we did not want to lend to them. The commercials were intended to increase confidence and trust so that GM can sell more cars, because selling more cars is pretty much the only thing that can get GM out of the mess they are in.

Trouble with selling more cars is that a significant number of Americans basically have a grudge against GM for taking our money that our political representatives forced us to lend. Most people I talk to do not plan to buy another GM car again. I hear that Ford is doing pretty well, though.

So all this Toyota stuff, I completely believe in the possibility that there are ill intentions on the part of the gov. "Government Motors" is seemingly unable to win a fair fight, so now they appear to be fighting dirty.

Ultimately, what will come of all this? I'm not sure, but I've had a gut feeling for a while that Ford will eventually benefit greatly (maybe a few years from now) from all this turmoil.

...

GM's payback was a lie.

They "paid back" the loan with money they received from the government. http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/23/general-motors-economy-bail...

I think people are seeing

I think people are seeing through this. Even my mom who is...well lets say half awake to some things and willfully ignorant on a lot called me up and asked me if this was the government jumping all over Toyota because they own GM now.

I don't think the propaganda is working like it should anymore. Each day people are starting to put more and more puzzle pieces together.

The snowball is certainly gaining much strength right now.

I said the same thing last week too

I figured, GM isn't known for their reliability. Which is the main reason people flock to Toyota. As evident by their huge success during the Cash For Clunkers Program. People trust Toyota. They have to re-establish people's faith in American autos by knocking down the competition.

Watch the number of recalls

Watch the number of recalls on Govt Motors and Chrysler drop dramitically.
