Republic Versus Democracy - Ron Paul Speech in U.S. Congress

A very important basic concept which is not correctly taught in government controlled schools.

Republic to Democracy = We the People Without Freedom

Great perspective on slavery and the dangers of democracy in an unenlightened society:

"Although the United States Constitution was by far the best ever written for the protection of liberty, with safeguards against the dangers of a democracy, it, too, was flawed from the beginning. Instead of guaranteeing liberty equally for all people, the authors themselves yielded to the democratic majority's demands that they compromise on the issue of slavery. This mistake, plus others along the way, culminated in a civil war that surely could have been prevented with clearer understanding and a more principled approach to the establishment of a constitutional republic."

That one stood out for me too.

They compromised the principles, and look what happened.

one of his best

This is one of the best speeches I've heard from Ron Paul. He absolutely nails it.

loved it

this was sooooo great to listen to. many things to quote from here.

It's an outstanding summary.

He explains exactly why America is failing and exactly what needs to be done.

Mostly, we just need to follow the law! And ensure that our government does too. As incredible as that sounds.

Article IV - Section 4 - Republican government

"Article IV - The States

Section 4 - Republican government

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

I refuse to even recognize a "democratic" party...teeheee:D

This concept needs expanded upon. Every Liberty type answer to a question in an interview needs mention of this concept. The TEA party turds were falling on themselves with half baked answers. Explain the fundamentals, inspire debate, tell those who are wrong to go away;)

Liberty in a Democracy ...

The problem is, that e.g. the US tries to shape other democracies after its own mold. But the main thing is the respect for individual and minority rights. In fact, if that were a given, you'd not even need a democracy as he majority could never infringe anyhow. Thus countries which have ethnic diversity such as Iraq, Lebanon and the former Yugoslavia never were compatible with American policies and it ended in bloodshed.

Liberty and Democracy are Incompatible. They are opposites.

You either have a republic of laws which protect individual liberty and freedom, or you have any of the other collectivist governments, such as Democracy, Communism, Socialism, Fascism, etc.

The only thing you do democratically in a republic, is elect representatives. And even then, those representatives are restrained within the laws of the republic. They may not vote democratically on anything they want, they must follow the law.

To encapsulate...

"a democracy fails when the tax consumer becomes the majority"

not the taxed consumer, but the tax consumer. And this is where we are and this is what we have been warning against for 20 years as libertarians.

ecorob's picture

so true...

we have to turn this around now

it is never too late unless you (in the all inclusive sense) do nothing

its 'cos I owe ya, my young friend...
Rockin' the FREE world in Tennessee since 1957!
9/11 Truth.

Democracy is tyranny by the majority.

Even along the way to failure, people are oppressed, harassed and violated by the majority.

Democracy is anti-liberty.

Loved it!!!

Were the congress critters listening? I hope so because I'm hearing more saber rattling than common sense from this current administration.

We Have Neither Democracy Nor A Republic

We have facism soon to be the refined version--nazism. The march toward this received enormous help from the corrupt federal judiciary--starting with Marbury v. Madison. They have ignored the clear wording of the Bill of Rights and have nullified them.

Lets put some fault where it belongs. Lawyers and Judges.

Also, let's examine the wording of the Constitution to see where it went wrong. The Supreme Court's misplaced interpretation of interstate commerce is one that needs examining. Meaning being more restrictive in the wording and providing punishment to those who break the rules.

And as to the resolution in a Shakespeare play...

King Henry the Sixth, Part II

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". - (Act IV, Scene II).

Great lead-off quote of Madison, Father of the Constitution

"Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contentions, have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property, and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a rEVOLution before tomorrow morning." - Henry Ford

That pretty much sums up democracy too.

And also the problems we are now having.

It's a great intro. It's amazing that people would not realize it, but democracy is anti-American.

JBS used several of these same quotes in their Overview of America DVD. I wonder if they were inspired by Ron Paul's speech?

Pass this link on to Sarah Palin.

And any other representative that seem clueless.

it's too long for Palin

she can't even remember energy, tax and lifting American spirits as being fundamentally important

oh but she can remember budget cuts! we can at least breathe a sigh of relief on that eh?

Is the CSPAN Video not working for anyone else now?

Did we overwhelm CSPAN with traffic? Did they intentionally take it down? Or just maintenance?

Joη's picture

doesn't work for me either

don't know. Though I doubt the DP slashdotted CSPAN. I was able to watch it earlier today...

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Probably just maintenence.

I notice others are not working either.

isn't this the speech "Sorry Mr Franklin, We're All Democrats Now"

that speech is one of my faves btw

Does anyone know about the Liberty

Amendment he mentions in the last paragraph of this speech?
He says it will generate debate and educate the people, protect freedom, restore the Republic. Has it been already introduced as a bill?

Liberty Amendment...

Has been introduced for over forty years by Statesmen including Dr. Ron Paul. It repeals the Marxian Graduated Income Tax in the 16th Amendment which has never been lawfully adopted according to the rules of amendments to the U.S. Constitution. When the FED is ended the socialistic 16th will not be necessary. I was formerly co-chairman of the State of New Jersey for the Liberty Amendment Committee of the U.S.A. chaired by Willis E. Stone. Willis Stone, now deceased, was a great orator, and brilliant in his knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, and freedom documents. It is billed as H.J.R.#48. Google same and you will find additional information on the subject matter...-whzh-

So Ron Paul Has Shifted Gears?

Instead of going for the 16th, now he's going straight for the Fed? Or was the focus still on the Fed back then too?

It is a one two punch...

In order to restore freedom we must take back the charter of the Federal Reserve, and allow competing currencies in the market. Thus "End The FED." When that can be accomplished we Repeal the 16th Amendment, and the Income Tax will not be necessary. That will end all wars for the bankers will not be loaning politicians money for their pet projects at home, and we will not be cajoled into foreign wars which are not our business in first place. Cottage industries will be sprouting up, and local banks will serve that market to make new products, and jobs will be created by the free market without intervention by the Federal Government...-whzh-
