My Iowa letter-please critique

12-14-07

Dear Iowan and fellow countryman,

The letter comes to you attached with my strongest convictions, with absolute sincerity and dire urgency.

I am a 46-year-old Floridian who has not voted in fifteen years-not due to laziness, but due to the choices offered to me and my fellow Americans. Nothing will stop me from voting this time. You see, this election offers a choice that most freedom-loving Americans have been waiting for all of their lives.

The 2008 election offers a man who has more integrity and honesty than any I have ever known; an intellectually gifted man who is educated in Austrian economics and well versed in the Constitution; a man who always does what he says and has a thirty-year record of defending the rights of Americans to prove it. This man is not a lawyer, but a doctor that has delivered over 4,000 babies.

This man will repeal NAFTA, which has caused so many problems for America. He will shore-up Social Security by stopping the raiding of it, and allow the young to opt-out. He will repeal the Patriot Act that has allowed government to strip away our Constitutional rights. He will end the Income tax, replacing the income by bringing our troops home from around the world where we only agitate other countries and spend almost half of our entire annual American budget. He will secure our borders, end birthright citizenship and obliterate other incentives that drive illegals to the U.S. He wants to return our country to our non-interventionist roots; proposing "trade with all nations and entangling alliances with none." He is pro-life (being a baby doctor), but always follows the Constitution and would give each state the right to choose.

He also wants to bring back the standard of having U.S. dollars backed by something other than thin air. This will allow the dollar to gain strength again and not have the Fed continually print money at their whim, which causes serious devaluation of the dollar. By the way, most think the “Fed” is part of the government, but it is actually an outside banking group with no Constitutional authority to print “our” money.

He has voted against the Iraq war and unlike the many other candidates, will end the war immediately. He, by the way, gets more donations from active military than any other candidate.

This man has been widely ignored by the media and is suggested that he has no chance. At the same time, he has won almost every on-line poll, more than half the nationwide straw polls, has hundreds, often thousands, show up at every event he appears. He has more than 75,000 grass roots meet-up members, over 50,000 videos made by individuals about him, people cheering him on from Florida to Washington, a record setting 4.3 million one day fund raiser, an $85,000 ad paid by an individual, and now a $400,000 a month blimp paid for by grass roots supporters.

Why do “they” say he can’t win? The answer is quite simple; they don’t want him to. They want business as usual in Washington, D.C. If you take a look at the owners of the major papers and television, you will see that most have an agenda different than the typical American. Most have interest in wars that continue to produce weapons and income for the few…..and deaths for the many!

This man will make the greatest President the country has ever known. He has been married to the same woman for fifty years, has 5 children and 18 grandchildren, is an Air Force veteran (flight surgeon), and principled like few others in this world. He has an impeccable record as a congressman who never voted to raise taxes and never voted for an unbalanced budget. This man is Ron Paul, and he and this country need your help.

I cannot tell you how to vote, but hope you will read the enclosed flyer and do research before your upcoming caucus. I believe you will come to the same conclusion that millions of Americans and I have: Ron Paul is, far and away, the best chance we have ever had to restore the America of old. Ron Paul is truly a great man and a great American.

Merry Christmas,

Not that I plan on changing any more. I've had about 10 revisions! As always, it shows people do care here. What a great crew we have here....even with the fighting. If it was sterile all the time, it would be boring and less productive, I believe.

You need to reduce the size

You need to reduce the size of this letter by about 50 percent. Set priorities and then make the cuts. People are more likely to read a short letter.

Meanwhile back at the ranch : ) 24 Hours later

Bob you are done... Grandma always said a watched pot never boils. Get that fine letter in the mail ASAP. The United Postal Service is run by our current Government and we all know we can not count on them. If you wait too long, your message of all that is good will be too late.

Yep, Peg

What's worth doing is worth doing well. Really have a great team of writers around here. Special thanks to you and "Zoomersmom." She gave some great input. Will send out on Thursday, but hopefully others will use it, in part or total, for other states as well. It may play well here in Florida.

Sums it up for me!

Sums it up for me! Very direct and to the point! Informative, covers the most important issues. I have copied it and am e-mailing it to all in my address book!

Thank you for the good work!

PS. You might mention the website and a few links also!

Wish I had you guys in Composition class

It's almost like cheating with all of this help! I can live with that. And yes, my original thought was to have a few sentences and let the slim-jim do the talking. I realized that it just was not going to explain some of the points I thought were important. Soooooo, a little long, but I am reasonably happy with the finished product. If the readers don't read it, well, there loss. You can only condense Ron so much.

Thanks again to all for you thoughtful assistance.

Is it a go?

Just read this

I'll echo what was already said: brevity is key.

Also, I'll repeat what I said below in different words: know your audience! Please take this into consideration about the Evangelicals:

http://www.dailypaul.com/node/12658

Appreciate your thoughts

But I cannot change my thoughts for a specific audience any more than Ron can change his. I hope the Iowans have more of an open mind than we give them credit for. If they don't, Ron has little chance there as he is a free thinker.

I have simply placed the info. that I feel most compelled to point out. If it is not religous enough, or at all, so be it. Sometimes important issues require detailed statements versus miminal info. I could be wrong, but I'll take that chance. I'm only sending a limited amount of letters and others can address the issues that they feel are important in their letters.

Thanks for your thoughts either way.

Brevity is the soul of wit

But it is you speaking from your heart....that is all that counts.

"...a $100,000 ad paid by an individual, and now a $400,000 blimp paid for by individuals from the grass roots."

I think the right amounts are: $85K ad, I'd just say "a grassroots funded blimp to get out the message of Dr. Paul"... or something like that...

My wife and I went through it, liked it, and have the following three corrections:

Sentence on "entangling alliances" - need to delete "alliances with."

Sentence on winning almost every on-line poll, missing a "he" between "time," and "has."

Sentence on Ron Paul being the best chance we have to restore America, you need to delete "by a" and just have "far and away."

Thank you for your labor. May it bear fruit for us all.

Last thoughts before I send?

Any "minor" changes you'd suggest?

Bob W., Naples, FL

Great letter

I still need to write more letters - you have some great ideas.

You might take the fourth paragraph and break it up into issues - with bullets - and the issue (Social Security, Immigration) in bold. That way if they do not want to read the letter the issues should get their attention.

I also like to print out one of Dr. Paul's articles and include it with the letter. He has so many great articles.

Nice. I sent mine out a few

Nice.

I sent mine out a few weeks ago. 30 of them...

I used Ronald Reagan stamps... I'm hoping it helps to get my point across to Republican voters.

Final cut-hopefully

Made many changes...thanks to all for your help. I had to draw the line somewhere to keep it "my" letter.

Thoughts are welcome.....not sure if changes are at this point as I'll never get it out!

Thanks

Ok, about done changing

Thanks for all of your help, but at a certain point, I just have to go with what I feel will work and is important. Further comments are welcome, but don't know that will change from here.

Challenge: Cut it down by a third!

Too many words and too many thoughts.

Focus focus focus focus

Focusing not only improves your message, but a shorter letter also increases the chance that people will read it. After all a more focused letter read is better than a letter covering more issues unread!

Be ruthless. Reduce the word count by a third. It's not as hard as you think. Take out paragraphs, sentences, clauses, prepositional phrases, and noun phrases. Combine.

Be concise.

Great effort... although I'd agree about making the points shorter and to the point. Any advertising professionals/copywriters want to punch up the copy a bit?

my comments

A fellow Floridian!

You've produced a well written letter, but I'm left wondering: what issues do Rep. Iowans care about most of all? I've read that it's religion, pro-war, and illegal immigration.

I'd "tone down" a lot of this message, then, to be more appealing to a wider audience. What I mean is that it takes a very long time to understand the complexities of some of Ron Paul's issues. I consider myself extremely open mineded, and it took me a month for some issues. We don't have that long. For instance, I'd take out most of the stuff on the Fed and replace it with "Ron Paul is the only candidate who wants to end the inflation tax." That's short and sweet and sure to get the recipient thinking.

Ron Paul isn't a minister, but you can refer to his speeches of his savior. You can play up his "married 50 years to the same woman" and strong family ties as well (children, grandchildren, great grandchild).

Since so many are so pro-war, it might be better to say "Ron Paul is strong on stopping illegal immigration. He wants to bring our border patrol gaurds back from Iraq to protect our borders at home." You kind of get the best of both worlds (getting anti-war guy interested but not offending pro-war guy).

They can see his complete stance when they do more research. If they don't do more research and just vote based on your letter, then even better!

I'm just "talking" out loud, now, but can we use "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays" for Iowans? That might go over better with the religious.

I just created a flyer to hand out to local residents in Broward. If you'd like to use anything and/or critique me, please do:

Be selective in sharing personal info

Don't take this the wrong way, but stating you are a single male may detract from your opening point on how Paul cured your apathy, and also make it easier for the recipient to stereotype you. Trim the sentence and see how it grabs the reader's attention:

I am 46 years old and have not voted in fifteen years.

Awesome letter! but wasn't

Awesome letter!
but wasn't he a flight surgeon in the Air Force?

You are right

When the Cuban Crisis came, Ron answered his country's call and became a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force.

Sorry Bob one more correction and then you can talk to the sand man.

I'll never get to bed!

But must be accurate. :)

Perfect...

Now you can do the happy dance while you stuff all those envelopes : )

May I offer a suggestion on the mail outs. If you send them to the attention of To My Friends or current resident
you will have less returned if people have moved.

Thanks, Peg

Now I can go to bed! Only sending 30/40 letters, but maybe someone else can use this letter or parts of it.

Spell check is ignoring you

"If "offers a man... Change to " It" offers a man

The last post mentions he was a Veteran, you might squeeze that in about being a flight surgeon.
