Reaching out to the left, and learning

0 votes

I'm really hoping this topic won't die in two minutes like all of my past ones.

I was hoping we could reach out to the lefties at another popular website and see if the dailypaul community could challenge them to a book exchange.

I think democraticunderground.com would be a great site to do this with.

The goal would be to get as many people from the dailypaul to read one book of their choosing and they read one book of ours.

So, we get both Michael Nystrom and the moderator for the democraticunderground to post a topic on their front page getting their members to pick just ONE book they would like their counterparts to read, and vice versa.

So, for example we would take a vote here at DP and let's just pretend it happens to be The Revolution: A Manifesto by Dr. Paul. Then they would read the book and comment on what they thought about it and discuss it.

We would do the same for whatever book they wanted us to read. This would be great because it would educate them on what our position is, and it would better educate us on what their position is. It would really bring some dialogue between these two separate factions. Any takers?

Most of us "lefties" agree with alot you say here

However, the economic model does seem a bit 18th century and has huge risks for the weakest of our society. I agree with Paul compeating currencies may be good and the fed.. well they are problomatic. If we let the free market reign greed can outwiegh benevolence and peope will suffer greatly. How many diabetics, poor cancer patients would die in the first years of your economic model. How would you geet the majority of doctors to opt into a benevolence model or socialistic lbertarian model (Groups of Docotrs etc volentarly giving away or reducing costs for patients). Some blending of systems must be done in order to wean people however lots of us are sick and will never be able to buy the treatment w3e need under the current model wihtout insurance etc.. I for one would die so see Pauls solution a tad scarry. This does not mean its doabe.

I guess my point is do not discount us liberals, lefities, and socialistists(I am a volentary or libertairina socialist) and have chosen that model cause I think it can help the most people live up t the ideals that each human is prescious to the world itself as they wre given by god certain rights and no on can take them away . I am against most ware if not all and on ly a defensive type of war because it violates the very rights that god has granted the enemy. This is why bieng atnit gay is bad, Anti Musliem, even toruturing others is an infringment against our constitution. Those rights are intrinsic in the natture of man and to deny them is to do violence to onselfe and the world.

I would enjoin you to learn from the socialist, the left y liberal whatver and understand that while I think we should fund the public libraies etc.. which sould do it not by force but by the reckognisiton not to do so is a form of violence on others. We should not be taxed but all dig deep and help each other as humans.

I myself spend 1/4 of my wages helping others in my town and I encourage you to do also. Health clinics and Freeclinics.com are good choices but pick something and join a group of people who donate to specific things which benefit all of society. This is not liberal, conservitie or anything but constittuional. You can blog here talk aout us lefties.. but practicing your beliefs is more important if you want to undrstand the founders intents.

However it must be made known that the constitution is fallable and has been used to enlsave men in many ways as you are aware.. not just economicly but by arguing that woman do not have the right to vote etc.. which is a denile of the rights of man.

Love you all.. I am sleepless thining about how to help humans.

"I myself spend 1/4 of my

"I myself spend 1/4 of my wages helping others in my town and I encourage you to do also"... I think the key word here is "encourage" and not "require". I would suspect that it is you who chooses who you give to in your community, is that correct? What if someone said the those 1/4 of your wages would be given away by them and not you! How would that make you feel - honestly!

The problem with socialism is that it "requires" that we all give what is rightfully and individually ours, without our consent, to others of the choosing of those who took it from us in the first place. If I were to come into your home, threaten you to give me your money or else, so I could take it to my home to give to whom I choose, would that not be stealing?

In your opinion, what would happen if we all somehow got to actually vote on whether or not our personal dollars should go to support the welfare system. Let's take that a step further and say that if you voted "yes", your tax dollars would go to support the welfare system but if you voted "no", my tax dollars could not be used for that, how long do you think the welfare system would last? I suspect not long because those who tend to be in favor of social welfare also tend to be the ones, for the most part, who rely on it too!

Of course the argument is moot in the minds of socialists because, afterall, we live in a Democracy so everyone should share the burden. Funny thing is though, that our Constitution never once mentions that we are a Democracy - look it up! The founders intent was quite the opposite as a matter of fact and that's why they referred to our union as a Republic.

You see, in a Republic, the burden of rule is placed upon the individual, first and foremost. It is a charter that put the onus of responsibility squarely on the shoulders of each of us, individually. In contrast, a Democracy is rule by majority, which is a concept that was shunned then for that very reason. Even the CIA's own World Fact Book, which defines the government stuctures of all nations in the world, states that the U.S. is a "Constitution-based federal republic; strong democratic tradition" Here is the link: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/...

What most socialists don't understand is they have been mislead by their big centralized educational system, to believe that the United States IS a Democracy but nothing could be further from the actual truth. I mean come on...when they tried to tell my son that Christopher Columbus discovered the new world, my son asked the teacher what the people who were already here thought about that! I'm so proud of him! He can think independently!

Anyway, I do not mean to give you the impression that I don't believe that taking care of other isn't important, I give a lot to others in need also! The difference between you and I is, who decides how much to give and to whom...you or I! I would prefer to make that call for myself thank you very much!

What's with the left / right stuff?

What's going on at the Federal level angers the left too as Obama has betrayed all the principals that got him votes. Now the left is reacting. The wars, CIA powers, bailouts, he's made them bigger. Yeah, they're ready to listen.

The leftist sites

are completely irrelevant and need traffic. You see Obama is in power and they have nothing to complain about. They just need us to go their and justify their existance for three more years. Let them rot.

I think most leftists are unreachable

I tried to reach out to Leftists on the thomhartmann.com message board. Thom Hartmann is a self-described progressive. In case you don't know, progressives support fascism and socialism in the name of opposing fascism. I tried to reach common ground with them on issues like war, civil liberties, the war on drugs, etc. No dice. They're more interested in regulating what they think is a laissez-faire economy. They are hopelessly stuck in the Left/Right thing. If you oppose or criticize them, they automatically think that you are a right-winger. They can't seem to wrap their heads around a pro-market, pro- personal liberty, anti-war person. For them, the free market means corporatism.

It's tough work for sure but not hopeless.

Dr. Paul's third party coalition agreement is where I start:

End the Wars
Audit the Fed
Repeal Patriot Act etc
Balance the Budget.

Find agreement and build on it, a little bit at a time. think month's and years, then you won't be too disappointed, but just one more voice in the effort.

Apples and oranges

If you want to get lefties to read books, go to a lefty book club meeting. If you want the kind of (relatively) instant gratification that the web can offer, ask them to watch G. Edward Griffin's classic "The Capitalist Conspiracy". It will be right up their alley just based on the title, and then the conversation is off and running.

I really believe if filmmakers like Alex Jones want to reach a wider audience, they should release concurrent versions of their films with different titles and packaging, much like major magazines release localized issues with different cover art.

..

i think this is a great idea, and i dont think we should let it die... i'm sure there'e other leftist sites we can try this with... my vote is for "economics in one lesson" btw

I think this project is dead

For starters there aren't enough people here who are interested. Secondly, and what is more sad, is that over the last couple days I've been posting at democraticunderground and as of today I've been banned. I have no idea why. I never said anything rude or derogatory. I never trolled. I engaged in peaceful debate about ideas and tried to bridge the gap between the far left and right. I guess they were intimidated by that. It's sad how closed their minds are. Oh well.

It's not necessarily dead.

It's not necessarily dead. It is actually a great idea and worth moving forward with. Who cares if we can only get a handful of people to participate this early on. Just because you don't get 200 replies, there is no way to gauge how many would participate if the project had some credibility. Use the results we have and find a board that has a delegation which will participate. I'll read their suggested book and report an analysis, and I think others will do the same. Maybe after we find a board that is willing, we can try to get a fp plug again and get a few more votes and proceed.

Sorry I laughed at you yesterday, but you see why now

They are not interested in debate or learning. They are a strange lot for sure. Try the conservative forums, it's the same thing. Sad really.

Maybe we should have a contest. Who posts the most

Most post before ban wins!

I would be very interested

in doing this open handed project. We need to learn from the Doctor about making peace with all. I am not into a religion, but I pray for the good to be stronger and the evil to change. Let's not be classified and continue to free minds. Who is with me?

Look...I hate lefty's so bad I want to torture them with

What they hate the most...Math!

I really don't hate them that bad, just don't like people who advocate theft and call me names for not agreeing with them.

So If more people on here had read it and it wasn't advocating for the right (I hate righties just a tick less than lefties) I would choose; Who really cares:...http://www.amazon.com/Who-Really-Cares-Compassionate-Conservatism/dp/0465008232/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265880745&sr=1-1

Its a great book and it does a good job at explaining the idea that Taxes are theft and that charity is better. In my experience it does the best job of angering them b/c it makes them question their core beliefs. But since its still caught in left v right...

The road to serfdom is a great, but the best seller on mises.org Hazlett's Economics in One Lesson is my vote!

Sweet vote

I almost voted for Econ in One Lesson as well.

So far we've got

2 A Foreign Policy of Freedom
2 Healing Our World
1 The 5000 Year Leap
1 U.S. Constitution
1 Meltdown
1 The Creature From Jekyll Island
1 Liberalism

So far that's a total of 9 votes. I'm not sure it's worth going to the trouble of trying to set up a book exchange unless we can get at least 50+ people to commit to it. So, if I can get another 41 people to vote, who would also take part in the book exchange, then I'll proceed. So please, if you'd like to take part and want to vote for a book, please do so.

Liberalism By: Ludwig von Mises

Available free or for purchase at mises.org

My vote

The Creature from Jeckel Island! Granted, 600+ pages of info may bit a bit overwhelming for the uneducated masses out there, but damn if those 600 pages are pure .999 fine gold.

I think it is such a great book to read because it covers the entire history of money and banking, and laws of economics and how the Fed works an all that wonderful stuff. It even discusses the NWO and its various fronts and goals.

Great idea!

I'd love to take part in this. This thread has also given me a lot more books to read that I haven't yet haha

Book suggestion

Meltdown, by Thomas Woods.

Let's have the left HATE THE FED.

Hahahahahahaha

That's great. Let me know how long it takes them to ban you. Ask them to read the Constitution--that will probably be enough right there.

How about a video or article instead of book.

Or a book available online

Great post!

I forget what speech I watched on DP that proposed that it was part of our problem. It was weekend watching and the beginning of the lecture the guy showed the history of countries and how much smaller countries became over time. Also pointed out that the Americas were unique in gaining, not losing more states.

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

Do you have a book

to vote for?

Read "End the Fed" by Ron Paul....

"Foreign Policy of Freedom"

And I will go ahead and read "Obama's New Deal" or whatever the book is called.

I agreed with Obama in fact. I never agreed with his corporate socialist bosses at the Fed, who are ultimately the enemy of all in this country....

What's your vote?

End The Fed or Foreign Policy of Freedom?

So far

we've got
2 for A Foreign Policy of Freedom
2 for Healing Our World
1 for The 5000 Year Leap

More votes needed people.

A Foreign Policy of Freedom by Ron Paul

They would love it!
