Why what Glenn Beck did today with Medina is good for the liberty movement.Submitted by ClassicalLiberal on Thu, 02/11/2010 - 18:17
Let's admit Glenn Beck has become one of the default spokesmen of the liberty movement. He brings more libertarians on his show than any other. He's even advocating a non-interventionist foreign policy now.
Now, we need to look at it from Glen Beck's standpoint. What's he likely thinking? What if Beck began expressing approval for Medina while rumors were circulating (such as this: http://txconservative.wordpress.com/2010/02/10/inside-the-me...) that she was a Truther? What if it was found out later that the rumors were true, and in the meanwhile he had been praising her? Reports would start coming out that Beck supports a Truther. That would hurt is his credibility among the mainstream audience including possibly the mainstream libertarian (non-Truther) audience. There would be so many attacks coming at him, from people such as Rachael Madow making fun of him for attacking Van Jones for being Truther while supporting a Truther. So the smart thing for Beck to do, from a self-interest standpoint, is to make sure that someone who he's going to be possibly appear to like or support is not a Truther.
And again, because Beck has become a major spokesman for the liberty movement, this protects the liberty movement from being associated with 9/11 Truthers. This lets people more people take the liberty movement seriously.
Medina is just going to have to be a casualty for the greater cause.
